Fedora :: Any Way To Undo Downloaded NVidia Modules?
Jul 4, 2010
I downloaded all the nvidia modules from yum repos. Now fedora will not boot. Seems to fail as xwindows starts. How I can undo those modules from the live disk? I've tried removing blacklists from etc/modprobe.d. and the .ko files from /lib/kernel/drivers//. My next alternative is to do what the windows lot do. Backup and re-install.

I'm trying to install the nvidia drivers but it is not working.
lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] (rev a3)
My xorg.conf looks like this:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
[code]...
And after that my X is not working. And when i try sudo modprobe nvidia I get this:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.26-2-686/nvidia/nvidia.ko): No such device

My PC is running with 2GB of DDR2 memory installed (one DIMM). But when put 4GBs in (2x2GB, dual channel), strange things start to happen!
I have a GA-MA69G-S3H motherboard, AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ CPU, and openSUSE 11.3 installed (2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop, x86_64).
Symptoms are that X won't start. In /var/log/warn, I see entries like this:
Jan 28 18:55:19 media kernel: [ 8.690297] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.21 Thu Nov 4 21:16:27 PDT 2010
Jan 28 18:55:20 media mcelog: failed to prefill DIMM database from DMI data
Jan 28 18:55:20 media kernel: [ 9.463711] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 53, CMDre 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000001
[Code]....
(I'll see this for various processes, not just xfslogd. But always with the nvidia, uh... is that an interrupt?)

I have, for days, been trying to get a Fedora 15 server to send audio output to the system monitor, an ASUS VH242H, via HDMI. The video portion works perfectly, allowing me to appreciate GNOME 3 for the first time. Sound, on the other hand, is non-existent.
From many, many threads on this problem, I have at least been able to provide some info which might help resolve this. Unfortunately, I have now read too much and followed too many suggestions to be able to find my way through the morass. So, once again, I built a completely new system to ensure a clean start.
Note also that to simplify things, I disabled the on-board audio in BIOS so only Nvidia has any sound output capability. Initially, 'alsamixer -V all' identifies the card and the chip as being PulseAudio. That would change if I used the <F6> option but I have not done so to keep things 'clean' at this point. The 'Master' is full on (100<>100), so muting is not a problem. Next, I searched for the device from the output of /proc/asound/card0 which would match the monitor.
The one device associated with the monitor_name is eld#3.0:
monitor_present 1
eld_valid 1
monitor_name ASUS VH242H
[code]...
Both the kernel driver and the kernel modules are not what I think I should have. The kernel driver should be HDA NVidia for starters, no? Running modprobe -l and looking for nvidia returns:
'kernel/drivers /video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko'and 'extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko' But I have not attempted anything beyond this point because I am just too confused as to what needs to be done and who or what manages these values effectively.

setting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.

I just started a new SysAdmin job on Monday Jan 11, 2010. My predecessor left before I joined the company with NO documentation. All of the system mail (alerts, error messages, informative messages, etc.) that's going to root is being redirected to my boss. I checked .mailrc and /etc/aliases for an alias that would equate root with my boss, but couldn't find anything. My boss doesn't want to be receiving these emails. Where else can the previous SA could have done this operation. How can I sub my email address for that of my boss' to be receiving these alert messages.

Two weeks ago I consumed all available FC13 updates. It was a terrible mistake. After that my my PC does not function properly and I have no clue how to fix it. I would like to get my PC in the previous (healthy) state. Is there an easy way to undo the updates? More than 60 packages were updated, but I do not remember which ones.

I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

I enabled rpmfusion repo of course. I don't have anything isntalled just the base programs what fedora installs. I updated the kernel and installed kernel-devel aswell.
This is what i got:

I am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.
Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.
I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.

I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"
I tried to look into the directory and there was only modules under 2.6.44.3. So I tried to change the command into: Quote: mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.4 -m ext3 -f ext3 -r cryptroot -C /dev/sda2
This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

After rdblacklist=nouveau in grub it runs, but I am having several issues and therefore I would like to downgrade to nouveau or whatever I had running with basic fedora 12 installation.

i did something wrong and i was left with one way and that was reinstalling fedora core 12 so i don't want to do the wrong way one more time, what is the difference between kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia?i did yum -y install akmod-nvidia and then type xconfig-nvidia on the terminal, after logging off i confront with a blank screen,so i reinstall fc12 x86-64.from what i've understand this is what i should do?
1:yum update
2:setsetbool -P allow-execstack on ==> in order to lower your system protection so SElinux doesn't prevent the driver from loading
3:if it's standard kernel type use komd-nividia and for PAE kernel type use kmod-nvidia-PAE
4: Keep nouveau from loading so
su -c 'mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img'
and
su -c 'dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)'
5:To use the default initrd, but disable the nouveau driver, edit /etc/grub.conf and add the following to the end of the line(s) starting with 'kernel':
rdblacklist=nouveau
if these are right!will yum update command update everything?as i'm still on dial up.i couldn't find kmod-nvidia with command yum install kmod-nvidia [although i had rpmfusion free&nonefree but i did not execute the yum update command before that,is this the reason that yum could not find the komd-nvidia?

I just installed a Puppy Linux 5.1 to a VirtualBox VM and selected hardware virtualization. It installed ok and then later I noticed I had not unloaded the kvm and kvm_intel modules. I was then surprised to notice the vbox modules were also loaded. It used to be you had to kick out the kvm modules before you could even boot a VM in VirtualBox using SVM or VT-X. If you didn't you'd get some error message in Vbox have to quit and restart it after removed the kvm modules.
Is this a neat new functionality of VirtualBox or something that was improved in Fedora?
