Ubuntu / Apple :: Proper Keyboard Backlight Support Available?

Feb 24, 2011

I've finished integrating proper keyboard backlight support into gnome-power-manager (which in turn uses upower to actually control the keyboard backlight) which with any luck will be available in Natty out of the box. A similar patch should also land upstream too so Fedora etc should get it for free too in their next release too. In essence this allows us to provide the user with greater feedback and control than say just using pommed (ie. we can dim the keyboard on idle like the lcd display etc, and can display nice notifications of the keyboard backlight level too - see attached screenshot).

OpenSUSE :: Some GL Standard Screensavers Missing In 11.3

Jul 17, 2010

I run a molecular biology lab and we like to run the "Molecule" GL screensaver in order to look cool (I know it doesn't actually save screens, and it wastes energy, but you know..). I'm about to install Opensuse 11.3 on all 24 of our laptops and I find that the number of GL screensavers installed as standard is greatly reduced from previous Opensuse releases. Any idea where I can get the "Molecule" and other screensavers?

I am running KDE and have the following relevant packages installed:
kdeartwork4-screensaver
xscreensaver
xscreensaver-data
xscreensaver-data-extra
gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver-extra
This apparently gives me just 8 GL screensavers - there used to be a great many more?

OpenSUSE :: Setting The System Back To Standard KDE 4.6.0?

Jun 15, 2011

over here on my desktop I have KDE 4.6.4 running, updated from 4.6.0 through all intermediate steps. In the last few days I feel, that it got a bit unstable and I think, I have messed it up again, with doing some stupid things in the repository management. But of course, I don´t remember what I did...

So I am asking myself, if I could reset the system to the state where it came from: KDE 4.6.0, including all the updates from the standard openSUSE repositories.

I would do it as follows:

1. deactivate the additional KDE repositories and X11 from OBS (I needed it for installing xbindkeys)

2. switch packages to the standard repositories, which came with openSUSE, and also switch the packages to Packman

3. run an update, or how it is called, the switch back to 4.6.0

would this work, or would I completly mess the system up?

I then would leave it like it is, with the only additional repo´s: Packman

OpenSUSE Install :: Installation From Standard Iso File?

Jun 21, 2010

I have created virtual cd (using damoen tools) for opensuse 11.2 installation from standard iso file and that installed installer for opensuse in my C drive and asked me to restart. After I restarted it gave me two options during boot, vista and opensuse 11.2 installer. I tried installing opensuse 11.2 from boot option and it asked me for language>country>installation. From the installation window which gave three options, I selected installation option and after preparing system for installation it asked me about sda location....I had separate partition which I selected and after that it is asking me for source which I dont know what it is. I tried few things but no success and then tried to get in to vista but unfortunately it is not booting in vista as well and takes me though the same process explained above.

So both my boot options are trying to install opensuse 11.2 and stops at provide source window. So in a nutshell I am stuck and not able to use my system. For your information I dont have vista installation cd so I cant repair vista.

After upgrading to 11.4, the microphone on my headset ceased to work with my softphone. As it turned out, the softphone used the standard input device, which was defined in the Phonon tab in the KDE System Settings. Unfortunately, when I put the USB Device on top of the default input stack, it doesn't stay there. When I apply the changes and leave the Phonon tab or even enable "Show advanced devices " the stack always resets to its initial order. I was unable to find any kind of config file where Phonon saves this settings.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mute Using Keyboard Shortcut But Not Unmute On Opensuse 11.2?

Mar 11, 2010

I recently installed Opensuse 11.2 on my Acer 3680 laptop. I can unmute it by using the volumen control in the system tray.

I am puzzled, this did not happen under Fedora 12 nor Linux Mint 8 / Ubuntu 9.10. What could be the cause of the issue and what can I do to locate the source of the problem?

Server :: Driver Support - QME2572 - Qlogic - Card Became Support By The Kernel

Jul 10, 2011

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

OpenSUSE :: Any Changes From 11.1==>11.2 Affecting SANE Support Via USB?

Feb 4, 2010

I've been running 64-bit openSUSE 11.2 since shortly after it's release, on a quad core AMD Phenom based machine, using KDE as the Desktop. I have a USB-attached "multi-function" printer/scanner/etc., which worked fine with XSane under 11.1. On the same machine, with 11.2, I can still get a scan preview. But when I try a full scan, shortly after it starts, the progress bar stops, then XSane complains about an I/O error.

When I update openSUSE versions, if I can, I keep the old version completely intact, on the same machine. This includes the /home partition, I don't overwrite it. Sure it's a good deal more work to copy over the numerous files needed, but if there are any problems with the new software, it's extremely helpful to have a completely intact old environment for reference. I was able to do this, while updating 11.1 ==> 11.2. Booting the old 11.1 system on the same machine, I haven't encountered any scanning problems.

I haven't given a lot of details, because it's the same hardware, that should "in theory", mostly eliminate the hardware as a possible source of the problem. I'm hoping the problem can be resolved by focusing on any changes in SANE support, or XSANE itself, for USB attached scanners. It could be unrelated, but messages such as these are in /var/log/messages on the 11.2 sys:

Feb 3 17:45:03 toe-heaven kernel: [ 5881.313532] usb 3-1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usblp while 'xsane' sets config #1
Feb 3 17:45:03 toe-heaven kernel: [ 5881.313560] usb 3-1: usbfs: process 8214 (xsane) did not claim interface 1 before use

If XSane is doing things in the wrong order, I'm wondering if it would be a problem especially for a combined printer/scanner, or would the problem still occur if the printer and scanner were two physically separate devices? I checked and there are similar messages in /var/log/messages with 11.1. But if it is an error in the sequence in which XSane does things, could it somehow cause problems under 11.2, yet not 11.1? I tried to find anything which might be related to USB device handling, which perhaps could interact. I came across messages such as these in 11.2, but not 11.1:

Feb 4 15:15:10 toe-heaven udev-configure-printer: add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/usb3/3-1/3-1:1.0/usb/lp1
Feb 4 15:15:10 toe-heaven udev-configure-printer: parent devpath is /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/usb3/3-1

Is USB printer handling somehow different under 11.2? With a combined printer/scanner, could there be an interaction? I did some experimenting. I kind'a thought a scan preview was just a scan at low res. So I tried to do full scans, starting with the lowest res., and increasing. I was able to do successful full scans at 100 or 150. But from 200 on up, the higher the res., the shorter the time to get an I/O error. I'd normally use 600 or above, to get what I feel is a good looking scan. At 600 the error report is practically immediate. It's almost as if the error only occurs above a certain threshold, of amount of data per unit time. I should mention, although it's a color scanner, I'm scanning a black and white doc., so using that mode of XSane.
