OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Startup X After Installing Fglrx?

Sep 14, 2010

I am running Suse 11.3 with two monitors and two video controllers -- an ATI controller on the motherboard and a separate PCI ATI board. After some startup problems, I got the onboard video working properly with the "nomodeset" command on boot, but the other display is blank. Thinking it might be the driver, I downloaded the fglrx driver (via YAST2). But now when the system boots it never opens X windows. I looked at the Xorg.0.log file and I'm getting a bunch of WW errors and then a seg fault.

The file /usr/share/doc/packages/fglrx/installer.html says I can uninstall the driver using the fglrx-uninstall.sh script, but I can't find such a script. How do I disable (uninstall, remove, get rid of) the fglrx driver and get back to where I was? I'm dead in the water if I can't get X going.

Debian Multimedia :: Very Small Problem With Fglrx On Startup

Aug 16, 2011

The GRUB2 menu loads up fine, and I am logged into Gnome okay right now, but in between Grub & Gnome, I see no log messages during startup. So far, it's just an annoyance, but one of these days an automatic fsck is going to find something, and I won't be able to see it. I have a custom kernel, with fglrx compiled into it, in case that matters. This system has never used radeon drivers, so I can't add any information about how this worked before fglrx; it just didn't work without it. I saw startup messages IIRC with kernel 2.6.32 / Debian 5.0, but I couldn't tell which of the many changes led to this little malfunction. Now using Debian 6.0 / kernel 3.0.0.

Hopefully, this is just a minor glitch in Grub2 or some other .conf file, maybe in /etc/X11.

Ubuntu :: Installing The Latest ATi Driver - Fglrx - Fails On 9.10

May 22, 2010

I got tired of not being able to run any 3D apps on my integrated Intel and went out and came home with a ATi Radeon HD 4650. Skip the bit about how I could have gotten an nVidia (they didn't have any HTPC compatible low-profile nVidias on shelf).

Actually the card works very well, it runs all the 3D apps I've thrown at it so far (and quite a bit faster too).

My problem is with video playback: it is jerky. The framerate stalls and then speeds up and is out of sync. When not out of sync, there is tearing. Yes I have tried turning Compiz off, didn't do anything. Weird thing is the CPU utilization is really low, so everything should be working.

I figured I would update the video drivers to the latest available on ATi website (following the instructions here) but I've ran into trouble with the installer:

Code:

How do I proceed from here? If you've got a fix for the video with the drivers in the repositories that is cool also. I don't necessarily need the latest drivers.

Ubuntu :: How To Have Desktop Effects Without Installing FGLRX - Lucid Daily

Apr 24, 2010

I have a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop with what lspci calls an "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400" graphics card. Today I downloaded a daily image of Lucid, threw it on a USB drive, and booted it up. As I go to install the restricted driver for my graphics card, I notice that clicking on a panel item triggers the star burst effect. Come to find out that I can set desktop effects to "extra" and get smooth wobbly windows and everything.

Why are desktop effects working? I've always had to install FGLRX before, did the open source driver somehow get 3D support? Am I missing something? I almost feel like Compiz is performing better-- smoother, less tearing, etc.

SUSE / Novell :: Installing OpenSUSE 11.1 On Playstation 3 - On Startup A Blue/grey Screen Appears

Jan 17, 2009

I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):

[Full Screen]
[url]

[Top Half]
[url]

[Bottom Half]
[url]

As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.

Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?

Ubuntu :: After Installing Fglrx, Kde4-window-decorator Crashes When Run Compiz?

Sep 24, 2010

I was using the open source ATI drivers and KDE's compositing worked, so I hadn't installed compiz. I wanted to try fglrx because I thought a) I might be able to get temperature readings, and b) it might stop Kubuntu from making my computer incredibly hot (in Windows 7 it stays cool). So I installed fglrx by enabling it in the restricted hardware drivers thing, and things worked, but compositing was disabled and no matter what I did I couldn't enable it. So I installed compiz. When I run compiz, I get the following output:

Ubuntu :: ATI Catalyst - Unable To Get The System To Work With Fglrx?

Feb 22, 2011

So I was stupid and careless enough to buy system with ATI Radeon HD6850.I have Maverick installed (64 bit) and everything was fine yesterday, I did usual update and today I get text prompt.I tried everything I already learned and upgraded to Catalyst 11.2 too (built packages from downloader installer), but with no luck.I see that aticonfig is now recognizing my card, which is promissing, but I'm unable to get the system to work with fglrx anyway.

I've purged the fglrx and friends, removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and now I'm running on vesa with lower resolution. But I'm quite pissed off for loosing my morning on fixing (or failing to fix) yet another problem with ATI.

Ubuntu :: After Upgrade - Unable To Run Effects Or Unity (fglrx - ATI)

May 2, 2011

When I first did the upgrade to Natty, no desktop at all would start. I could only get a text terminal login prompt. Log showed a segfault in fglrx module: "firegl_SetSuspendResumeState" I found instructions to remove the fglrx module and install the default ATI driver. Now I get a graphical login screen. But I must only login with "Ubuntu Classic (No effects)" in order to get a desktop. If I select Unity or Ubuntu Classic, I never get taskbars or menus and can't run any apps. So Natty Narwahl is a big step backwards for me. What is the relevant information to provide? The display driver is listed as RV710 [Radeon HD 4550] from ATI Technologies Inc.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Access Internet Installing From Live USB

Nov 6, 2010

Installing from Live USB: Installing from USB on my desktop (used this method for laptop install) goes without a hitch. EXCEPT, I notice there is no support for my wireless card chipset (Atheros 7413, used /bin/lspci to find). I download the drivers for Linux, but I need Make to build the drivers...ok. I download the Make files from my laptop, make coffee, slap the makefiles onto a flash drive and run the configure file on my desktop version of SUSE. Whoops, need a c compiler (odd that openSUSE did not come with gcc? bit confused on that). If you can't tell by now, I've been using linux for less than a month so I am what you would call a noob? After the lack of c compiler, I drove to my office to snag some DVDs to download the DVD iso image, hoping it would have some form of c compiler/make packaged, since the description does say the DVD has more software (can't find any prebuilt versions of either...?)

Installing from DVD: This was my next step. I wrote the iso image to a DVD and proceeded to boot from DVD. The installer fails at the system analysis, saying it cannot "create a repository". writing the iso to a second DVD produces the same result. Googling has not yielded a solution. tl;dr can't use openSUSE on my desktop because my wireless chipset is not suported by SUSE. I need Make to build the drivers, but I need a c compiler to compile Make, and I need the internet to get both for my machine.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Fglrx Broke My KDM / What To Do?

May 3, 2011

I seem to have disrupted my display manager when I installed fglrx from the Ati repository,
I was trying to update the graphics drivers as i am getting a screen flicker every 10-15 seconds and its beginning to annoy me, so I add the ATi repository in yast, installed 'fglrx' and rebooted.

Everything went as it should until the graphical loader showed the bar at about 50% and the screen went black, my monitor reports that its out of range after a minute or so.
My graphics card is a HD4650 and the max res of my screen is 75Hz,

Ive managed to get the command line by booting to Failsafe and started KDM manually and i get the same thing.

Im assuming that the driver is correct but is setting the resolution or refresh rate too high?
Has anyone else had this problem? and can someone point me in the direction of editing aticonfig?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Kernel Update And Fglrx Driver ?

Oct 29, 2010

I have an HP laptop running 11.3/KDE4.5.2, has integrated HD3200 ati graphics.

Yesterday, ATI version 10.10 fglrx driver was installed on the system, kernel was 2.6.34.7-0.4-desktop. I use the "build rpm" option with the downloads from ATI. All seemed running well.

I had installed the automatic recompile script posted by please_try_again after moving to 2.6.34.7-04, so today's new 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop update was a chance to see it in action.

After the update and reboot, the X server restarted so I have to assume the automatic recompile script ran, although I did not see any messaging (place to look?).

However, some things did not seem "quite right". fgl_glxgears ran, but seemed slow (only 70 or so fps) pm-suspend failed to sleep the machine, I see the error message "s2ram_do: Device or resource busy" in /var/log/pm-suspend.log, which I think (?) is fglrx related but not sure why I think that. I moved to a root terminal, init 3, removed the fglrx rpm with yast, deleted the fglrx rpm and rebuilt a new one with ati....run. I then installed the new rpm (with yast), ran aticonfig --initial, then rebooted.

Basically, I am at the same level as above, fglrx installed and running, but slow and pm-suspend still not working.

So now I wonder if there is a new problem with the -5 kernel update, something like the excitement a couple weeks back when we had to patch the driver (or the kernel symbols) just to get a compile.

Can i assume someone has been able to cleanly update to 2.6.34.7-0.5 and get their fglrx running again?

An observation, which may or may not be related to my issues. The fglrx rpm installs a new /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so, but in reviewing the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it never appears to load. Two other *dri*.so modules do load. There is no "dri" section in Xorg.conf; I seem to recall there being one a while back, but much seems to be changing there.

OpenSUSE :: ATI Fglrx Video Driver Install Made A Mess / How To Fix

Jun 13, 2010

OpenSuse 11.2
linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
ATI fglrx video driver v10.4
ATI radeon hd3200 video adapter

VirtualBox (any version) crashes at startup if the video acceleration options are enabled. This was not a problem before installing fglrx. The crash occurs when VirtualBox queries the video driver about OpenGL, I am guessing from the log file.

To (supposedly) have access to all of the features possible in the video adapter I installed the ATI fglrx video driver. I (apparently foolishly) chose the custom, installation-specific path rather than the more general default path.

After installing the driver I saw no observable improvement in performance or feature set. Worse, there are couple of new features that are decidedly undesirable, and cannot be disabled. At least one pre-loaded font simply disappeared.

So I reverted to the original (open source?) radeon driver ("sax2 -r -m 0=radeon" at runlevel 3). All seemed welluntil I ran VirtualBox.

One thing I have not tried is to run the fglrx default installation. I fear making things worse.

Can anyone suggest what might have happened with the fglrx installation, and how to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Installing Causes Windows To Restart Repeatedly During Startup

Aug 11, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu (the full version). I liked Wubi a lot, but that's because I just had to press down and enter during startup. After uninstalling it, I went to the full version, but that's been giving me more trouble than Wubi, lol.

First, it replaced my Windows Boot Manager with GRUB (which IMO sucks because it takes like 15 seconds to load the menu and it lags when you want to press an arrow key). Second, it screwed up my Windows (the first time I started up Windows I got like 50 lines of errors and after that I had to do the disk check thing but now it works). I use Vista x32, and when I try to boot into Windows it gets to the (C)Microsoft with the green loading bars thing and after about 5-10 seconds my computer randomly (without warning, the screen just turns black) restarts. Goes back to the BIOS menu, a full restart.

My first priority is to get Windows fully running without restarts during boot time. Then I'd like to use Windows boot manager to start Ubuntu (I checked with EasyBCD, Ubuntu doesn't show in WBM.

Oh BTW, dual-booting ubuntu 10.04 and WinVista SP2.
