OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Automounting And Windows Partitions On Desktop

I have had opensuse 11.2 installed on my netbook for a couple of months and it has worked smoothly. Recently after a couple of updates however, I have noticed that when I plug a usb drive into my netbook, opensuse is not automatically mounting the drive. Just then upgraded my system to 11.3 and I still have the same problem.When i run a "fdisk -l" I can see that my usb is there and when I run a mount command I can successfully mount it and access my files. However opensuse seems to no longer mount it for me automatically. I am running gnome and my netbook is a dell inspiron mini. Is there some way to turn the mounting of usb drives back on so I don't have to run a tedious command every time?
I have also noticed recently, that my windows partition appears as an icon on my desktop, whereas it never used to. I am confused as to why it has suddenly appeared here and my usb's are no longer mounting.

I have F9 on a laptop that dual boots with WinXP.When i log in and the desktop shows that the NTFS partition is mounted with a shortcut on the desktop. Is there a way to make it not automount? Trivial inconvenience, but i thought i'd ask anyway.

When I log into gnome all my other partitions are automatically mounted under /media, but when I log into kde, they are not. I would rather that they not be automatically mounted. How do I change this?

I am running Ubuntu 11.04.
I am having trouble automounting the ntfs partition. When I try to access the mounted partition, I get an error saying that I don't have permission to view the files. Also, I am not able to change the permissions as root.
The relevant line on the /etc/fstab file reads:

I use dual boot in the lap, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and openSUSE 11.3 x64, plus another NTFS partition dedicated for data. When I browse normally with Dolphin the 2 NTFS partitions I can see and browse them, but it doesn't allow me to write data (create new files or paste) or modify saved files. It's like a read-only partition. I have to run Dolphin browser as root in order to be able to normally write and modify data. Some other pals however tell me they're able to do it without running as root, although they use openSUSE x86.

When I insert a dvd into the drive, it's not automounting but cd's and usb stick drives automount just fine. I'm using 11.2. Any suggestions? Should I dig up the old mount command and do it manually?

in my case, to delete primary and secondary win partitions (C and D) and so to add that empty spaces to my current openSUSE / and /home partitions. My linux root partition is a primary one as well so I guess that I can keep booting from it no matter if there isn't the C win drive any more.

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I'm running opensuse 11.2 with gnome. When I plug in a USB disk. It automatically mounts those partitions that it recognizes. I'd rather it didn't. It creates icons on the desktop although I've managed to stop it opening a file manager window for each partition.But how do I stop the mounting altogether? I've looked in the menus, yast, gnome control centre and sysconfig editor but haven't found anything. And google hasn't given me any clues.

I saw an earlier thread on this but I'm still stymied.Running 11.3 x86-64. If I insert a cd/dvd into the drive, the drive is not mounted.I can mount the drive manually and the drive then works - just no automount. Tried with CD, DVD, both data and music formats - no go.A sandbox installation on the box works as expected so it's not hardware.I tried deleting the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules file, rebooted -no change. USB devices automount just fine and a Virtualbox WinXP session with pass-through to the device works just fine.
I can't find any differences between the setup on the 2 installations so it's time to holler for HELP!! I'm about out of hair to tear out.

I have been dual-booting Vista and openSUSE 11.2 until my SUSE install is fully functional and now and I want rid of Vista and to reclaim the space for Linux.

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?

While installation of openSUSE on machine already having winXP and Ubuntu, I chose "Edit partition setup", I also chose GRUB: change locaiton to "MBR" enabled installation summary was something like this, shrinking sda1 to 13.02 and sda5 to 12.3 Gb, swap partition to sda3 (old linux), root partition to sda6(old linux), then began installation, and after sometime, while shrinking done with sda5, when started with sda1, it showed the following error- Failure occured during following action: Shrinking partition /dev/sda1 to 13.03 GB (progress bar might not move) System error code was: -3027. Now, currenly, i am not able to have my winXp back, during booting it shows: error: no such partition grub rescue>_

When I insert a CD, the system no longer offers to automount it and CDs no longer show up in the list of disks on the left side of Dolphin windows. USB keys still work properly and I can still manually mount CDs through the command line? Was there some tweak to the HAL rules that disabled CD/DVD automounting and is there any way to fix this?

I notice that in 11.2 that USB drives are not automounted anymore. There is a notification that a device is found, but I have to actually click on the notification and choose to open it with dolphin. If I do nothing, the drive is never mounted. I remember from 10.3 that it would automount the drive and put a icon on the desktop. Is there anyway to duplicate this in 11.2?

I have tried unsucessfully to enable automounting for my 40 GB External Hard Drive in Suse 11.1. I am aware that there should be a line added to the Policy Kit to enable this, but the issue is that all of these files are .xml format and I can't seem to open them for editing no matter what program I choose to open them. I have Device Automounter/Notifier Plasmoid and it shows the SD reader with card in it, but it does not show the USB external HD.
Is there any other way to change this so I do not have to attach this external manually every time I turn this computer on? All of my music rests within my external and it gets to be very annoying when you have to manually mount to listen to music all the time. I'm using Suse 11.1, KDE. The external is a 40GB HD from Seagate.

I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.

I looked in YAST it appears everything is installed on my 11.3 machine to remotely view another desktop what I am missing is how I set that up on both ends. The desktops I want to view are on the local network. A Windows 7 64 machine and a openSUSE 11.4 machine.Does anyone have experience setting this up?

I have 10.10 installed within my Windows Xp.All was fine.Then,I upgraded to 11.04.Boot screen etc is fine .Log in is automatic in Classic.Unity & Compiz not supported.Now,again everything is fine except that my xp partitions are not recognised and hence I can not mount them and access them.

I want to access the Linux desktop from a Windows machine. I am able to get a terminal window with the TightVNC Windows client, but I only get a terminal window. Does anyone know how to get the entire desktop?
Also, from other discussions, it seems that I am supposed to be able to get a web session going, but I'm not sure how to do that. Does anyone know how to get a web session going through VNC? Do I need to run something other that vncserver?

I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay �� for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.

I am really a noob using Suse or any linux configuration. I have to work in a computer that uses Suse 10.3 from another computer that uses Windows.What I am looking for is for some programe that works most similarly to windows remote desktop or logmein. What I mean is that I want is to see my actual desktop, not to log as a new user (when I do that I loose my work when I log out)As I said I new at this so it would be great if you could recomend me some easy program to do what I need and with a detailed tutorial.

I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.
