I am dual booting Windows 7 & Suse 11.2 and want to uninstall Suse. I know how to remove the linux partitions through windows but need help to first remove the Grub bootloader installed through Yast to enable windows to boot from mbr.

in my case, to delete primary and secondary win partitions (C and D) and so to add that empty spaces to my current openSUSE / and /home partitions. My linux root partition is a primary one as well so I guess that I can keep booting from it no matter if there isn't the C win drive any more.

I have to hide Unix partitions to succeed in installing Linux and the winner is Ubuntu 10.10! I had to remove whole partitions entries. DOS based primary/logical partitions are now called (hd0,msdos1), (hd0,msdos2), etc. And BSD slices would have been (hd0, bsd1) (hd0,bsd2). I guess I saw those names during installation. update-grub failed in three attempts in a row on 2 machines (32 and 64 bit). Everything went fine after I removed the Unix partitions (which are going to be restored by openSUSE legacy Grub)

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?
While installation of openSUSE on machine already having winXP and Ubuntu, I chose "Edit partition setup", I also chose GRUB: change locaiton to "MBR" enabled installation summary was something like this, shrinking sda1 to 13.02 and sda5 to 12.3 Gb, swap partition to sda3 (old linux), root partition to sda6(old linux), then began installation, and after sometime, while shrinking done with sda5, when started with sda1, it showed the following error- Failure occured during following action: Shrinking partition /dev/sda1 to 13.03 GB (progress bar might not move) System error code was: -3027. Now, currenly, i am not able to have my winXp back, during booting it shows: error: no such partition grub rescue>_

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.

I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use dual boot in the lap, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and openSUSE 11.3 x64, plus another NTFS partition dedicated for data. When I browse normally with Dolphin the 2 NTFS partitions I can see and browse them, but it doesn't allow me to write data (create new files or paste) or modify saved files. It's like a read-only partition. I have to run Dolphin browser as root in order to be able to normally write and modify data. Some other pals however tell me they're able to do it without running as root, although they use openSUSE x86.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510.It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux.The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem.I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work.EDIT:Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOK I'm not sure if this is a bug or not but I recently changed from 9:10 to 10:04. I did a clean install as I wanted readjust the partitions and install Windows 7 as well.
There seems to be an issue with the start up. Not every time but sometime (most of the more recently) it won't start correctly. It stops on the start up and reboots the computer. It always at one of two places either on the first Ubuntu screen during start up after the Grub loader (the purple screen with "Ubuntu" and the loading dots underneath), or if it gets past that to the loading screen it will happen after I enter my password and try to log in. If it does manage to fully boot into my desktop, it seem to work fine (aside from the odd minor bug) Also it doesn't seem to do this with Windows as of yet, though I don't use Win as much as Ubuntu.
I have had opensuse 11.2 installed on my netbook for a couple of months and it has worked smoothly. Recently after a couple of updates however, I have noticed that when I plug a usb drive into my netbook, opensuse is not automatically mounting the drive. Just then upgraded my system to 11.3 and I still have the same problem.When i run a "fdisk -l" I can see that my usb is there and when I run a mount command I can successfully mount it and access my files. However opensuse seems to no longer mount it for me automatically. I am running gnome and my netbook is a dell inspiron mini. Is there some way to turn the mounting of usb drives back on so I don't have to run a tedious command every time?
I have also noticed recently, that my windows partition appears as an icon on my desktop, whereas it never used to. I am confused as to why it has suddenly appeared here and my usb's are no longer mounting.
I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a Windows 7 RC/openSUSE 11.1 dual-boot on this computer running on RAID 1. When I installed Windows 7 final, somehow it screwed up my RAID 1. I fought with it for a while, but decided to wipe the logical drive, and then go into BIOS and disable RAID. I reinstalled Windows 7 on the HDD, but I have no RAID now. BIOS shows 4 SATA drives. Windows sees all of them just fine. But the openSUSE 11.2 install DVD can't see any partitions on sda, sdb, sdc or sdd. It however says I still have two RAID logical drives, which I don't. I'd really like to install openSUSE 11.2, but I want it to recognize my Windows partitions, if for no other reason that to see my MP3 collection, my eBooks, etc.

I've heard that one can use a live Linux cd to remove malware from a windows computer. How would I go about doing this?
Is it as simple as booting the cd, then using zypper to install an anti-virus program to the ram file system and mounting/scanning the hard drive. If so what program is the best to use for this purpose?
I had Windows. Installed Linux 10.04 over it. I want to switch back to Windows. When I pop in my Windows XP disc I get and error after it loads a bunch of stuff. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.

Okay, so what I want to do is completely remove Ubuntu and the Grub Bootloader and install the Windows Bootloader but I am not so sure how to accomplish said task. It started when my laptop suddenly froze and I killed it (I just ran FF, IRC client, Kopete, ... and I think the last thing I did was plugging in a USB drive). When I wanted to boot the machine again it gave me a lot of errors that the root and the home partitions are both corrupted.
Repairing the system with the DVD didn't help at all and finally I removed all the partitions to reinstall the whole system.
During the installation it can create the partitions, but it can't format them with ext4.
I tried to format the partitions with a live CD and YaST Partioner and the same problem showed up code...
Texts about partitioning with LVM are quite technical.However I should like to find a text explaining me how to manually make LVM-partitions in OpenSuSE. Like which ones, how big, how to do it. I made an auto LVM with /home. Problem is my entire disk is not used (/root was 5GB max /home was only 7GB max on sda2)and I was not able to make the partitions the seize I wanted.
I have now sda1 configured as /home 280GB and sda2 with the proposed partitioning of Yast. So only 5,9 GB for root. It looks like my try-out is working fine, however. Using normal partitioning is not a good option on my PC. He shows lots of black screens. With LVM no problem at all.
Since i first installed my openSuse 11.2 on the laptop, I didn't know how much space I'd need for this OS to run. Now I've encuntered the worst - The root prartition is 6GB big and it might run out of space shortly (700MB left).I had Win XP on it but as soon as I learned openSuse to make basic tasks - i removed the ntfs partition.The HDD is 28GB, I have 6GB root, 7,5GB home, 750MB swap (512MB RAM) ans 14,65GB free space off the deleted NTFS.Is there any way to join the partitions, so the root can be 16GB in space and home around 12GB?
Or maybe just make another second /home partition and use a program to allocate the "missing bytes" from root to another partition if it runs out of space?
I have an acer travelmate 632 running 11.3.The grandkids have been playing playing frozen bubble in fullscreen mode but the "full screen" was actually only the central part of the monitor.Yesterday, there were a bunch of updates. Today, the kids again played frozen bubble but this time, the "full screen" was really the full screen, not the sub-window. After exiting the game, a window popped up telling me that a monitor had been disconnected and would I like to reconfigure. I said yes.
After reboot, the graphical login failed saying that a serious error had been encountered and that I should consult the KDM logs. I went to console mode but was unable to log in. Neither as root or as the regular user. Both fail with "Login incorrect". In fact, the only way in now is via single-user mode.
Looking through the /var/log/messages, I see a curious set of mesages complaining the, for instance, "/dev/sda4 is not in PARTITIONS" note the upper-case. I then see that, despite what "mount" tells me, ?home (sda4) and /boot (sda1) are not mounted. That is, I cannot list their contents. If I manually mount those partitions, I can list their contents.
I would like to combine my Linux partition (/sda3) and /sad1 to give me more disc space. I would also like to combine the two unallocated partitions to install a Windows 7 dual-boot with Ubuntu. How would I do that without totally raping my current Ubuntu install?
