OpenSUSE Hardware :: Setting Up Two Monitors?

Dec 3, 2010

opensuse V11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop x86_64
ati radeon hd4770 256 MB
viewsonic vp201b/vp2030b

I was hoping to set up two monitors, 1600x1200 each -> 3200x1200 virtual. When I attempt to do so, I get the message (paraphrased since I cannot copy it) "required virtual size does not fit available size: requested (3200, 1200), minimum (320, 200), maximum (1600, 1600)".

1600x1600? That's an odd limit.

There seems to be more than enough RAM to accommodate the requested size.

What is the limiting factor? Can it be bypassed?

Hardware :: Help Setting Up 3 Monitors On Two Cards

Just a bit of background I'm using an Matrox G450 Multihead and a Nvidia MX4000 and have three monitors. Id like the G450 multi head to fire on the far left and far right and the nvidia to run in the center. The desktop should be extended across all three.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Setting Physical Screen Controls On 2 Monitors

Jun 20, 2011

I use 2 screens. The one that is giving me problems is 5:4 1280*1024, 60Hz monitor. These settings have been automatically detected and do match the manual's screen settings. The mouse disappears off the top of the screen and yet when a window is expanded to full screen it stops at the physical edge of the screen. The mouse stops at the bottom and left side of the screen (the other screen is on its right)

Messages that a new email has arrived are mostly hidden above the edge of the screen. I have tried the physical screen controls but they do not allow me to change the size of the screen, as I am running the monitor in digital mode. I am using the nouveau drivers. What can I do to bring the boundary down to the physical edge of the top of the flat screen?

OpenSUSE :: Wallpaper Over 2 Monitors In KDE4 - SuSE 11.1

Jan 2, 2009

I've just installed SuSE 11.1, and have so far been able to get my dual monitor setup to play nice. Both monitors are operational, and function fine from an application point of view (3200x1200 res), but KDE refuses to display my wallpaper over both monitors. In fact, I cannot set the wallpaper for my second monitor at all (it's stuck to the default green SuSE wallpaper or a fixed color). As a side effect: widgets also refuse to be moved from one monitor to the next. Applications can be moved fine, even put half on one monitor and half on the other, but the widgets and the wallpaper refuse to cooperate. This worked fine for me with SuSE 10.3.

Doesn't work when done either as root or as me. So, there *must* be a way. How?

Trying to use it is a dead end for me. X11 is a mess. What happened to SAX and things like this that were part of openSUSE and just worked? Supposedly we X11 got better. I think it's got over complicated and much worse. This stuff just worked in 11.1 and KDE 3.

OpenSUSE :: LXDE Changes Qinternet Display On Different Monitors?

Jun 25, 2011

The following describes odd behavior in my opinion, but I'm not sure where this question belongs. How can a monitor affect the loading of application SW? Can I get some help to fix the following problem here?I installed lxde on a P3 with a Gem 17" CRT monitor. LXDE runs on top of opensuse 11.4. On a P4 box I installed kde with 11.4, both from the same DVD. The P4 OS was installed using Vivitron 1776 17" CRT monitor.

Both boxes use qinternet for connection to DSL. Qinternet is set to autostart and its icon displays in the taskbar system tray. I bought a ViewSonic E70 17" CRT monitor for the P4 and put the Vivitron on the P3.Now the P3 displays the qinternet icon in a small terminal instead of loading it into the system tray as before. Of the three 17" CRT monitors I have, only with the Gem will the P3 (LXDE) system display qinternet in the system tray.The P4 system (KDE4) can run any of the monitors and still put the qinternet icon into the system.Qinternet is a binary file, but if i "less" it, I can see references to kinternet, so I think it's KDE4 SW. LXDE may be the culprit, or maybe the behavior will involve xorg

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Twin Monitors On Different Cards?

The bad news is that, if I've understood this; Configuring graphics cards/Dual Head Mode - openSUSE, it should be detected and started in clone mode - it isn't. Running sax2 doesn't help (and that's the first thing in the XRandR instructions too. I've yet to see my second monitor so much as flicker. I would like to see this working on the live cd before I commit to installing opensuse.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Cannot Run Dual Monitors With NVidia-gfxG02 Proprietary Drivers?

Mar 15, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 with standard KDE and two screens attached.Here's the question: How do I configure dual monitors when using the proprietary nVidia drivers?The openSUSE 11.4 installation put in the "nouveau" drivers for my nVidia card and I was able to configure dual monitors using KDE's Configure Desktop --> Display & Monitors GUI configurator. I could also set up dual monitors using a script based on xrandr (e.g. "xrandr --output VGA-1 --auto --pos 0x0 --output DVI-I-1 --auto --pos 1920x0")My screens are detected as VGA-1 and DVI-I-1 by the nouveau drivers.

OK, today I switched to the proprietary nVidia drivers. Only one of the screens is now detected and displayed in the KDE monitor configurator and that's marked as "default" rather than as a VGA or DVI connection.When I run xrandr to configure monitors, I get error messages if I refer to VGA or DVI hardware.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Dual Monitors - Left Monitor Not Coming Out Of Powersave?

Sep 7, 2011

I have a really strange X (?) problem. My physical setup is:

Dell Optiplex 990
VisionTek 210 nV DMS59 PCIe video card (with a DVI splitter)
dual Dell P2411H monitors

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (x86_64 fully patched) with the current nvidia drivers and kernel module. I'm running KDE and kdm in case that matters.

If I power off the two monitors, and then power them on again, the right monitor will come back on. The left monitor (which is the primary one... it's the one where the login screen appears when you are first logging in) reports that it is in power save mode. Wiggling the mouse, typing, etc., do not wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up is the detach the DVI cable from the monitor and reattach it (and sometimes it takes a couple tries).

I have used two (identical) video cards and splitters, and the problem occurred with both, so the problem doesn't appear to be with either of them. I also swapped monitors, but after the swap, the problem still occurred on the left monitor, and the old left monitor (which was now right) came on fine, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor problem.

I'm baffled. For now, I just won't turn off the monitors (or at least not the left monitor).

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Two IPs On One NIC?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a single NIC (eth0) and it has a single, static public address assigned to it. I would like to assign an additional private address (192.168.1.68) to the NIC to make accessing my router more convenient, but I'm having a little trouble. I'm not using the Network Settings module in YaST because whenever I've tried before it has usually resulted in my internet connection failing and being unable to remove the alias info I tried setting in YaST. So, instead, I'm just trying to do it by editing the configuration directly. I'm also using it as an opportunity to learn a little bit more about Linux. So far, all I've done is add an extra line to my /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file. Originally the contents of the file were as follows.

Code:

BOOTPROTO='static'
BROADCAST=''
ETHTOOL_OPTIONS=''
IPADDR='XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/21'

[code]....

Naturally, this didn't work either. Can anyone tell me how to specify the gateway for the additional local address?

OpenSUSE :: Firefox 4 B12 No Cache Dir Setting

Mar 19, 2011

I thought about moving the firefox cache directory to /tmp, as I am moving /tmp to the ram, since I just got an SSD, and move off this write-hungry feature.However, with Firefox 4 beta 12 (shipping with 11.4 x86_64), when I get in about:config, there is just no option browser.cache.disk.parent_directory, which you would use to configure this.I searched a bit and it seems that this is still intended to be on Firefox in v.4.I might as well downgrade to 3.x for the moment. I see there is an RC available of v.4, but no package of it ready in repos.By the way, any thoughts on putting the firefox cache on ram? I know it will flush it at reboot! But the alternatives are:

-leave it on ssd (wear it)
-put it on hdd (so slow)
-disable cache

I did this by setting the webcam mic as the first device to use in either pavucontrol or systemsettings>multimedia>phonon>audio capture. There have been many KDE updates since then and now I am back to having no mic in Skype. I will set my webcam mic as described above but pavucontrol will no longer save my changes. It is permanently stuck using internal audio analog stereo as the first capture device. My webcam mic is listed but it is four down on the list and Skype will not access it.

General :: Setting Up Printer On OpenSuSE?

Once, I was able to get it setup using the CUPS software online, but was only able to print out a test copy and after that I was where I was before the setup.

This problem also happened on a Netbook computer which came with Ubuntu on it. The OS was able to pick up the network printer the first time too. On OpenSuSE it does not pick it up automaticly and and it seems to be difficult to setup using the built in software, or the cups system.
