OpenSUSE :: How To Make Linked Monitors

Aug 15, 2010

I have KDE4 in openSUSE 11.3 on a laptop. And I have this 23" monitor that I can connect to the lappy's VGA socket. So when I'm not travelling I can switch from the lappy monitor to the large monitor. But there are occasions when I want to see 8 or 10 live, dynamic graphs simultaneously. Is there software that will allow me to position the video output across two monitors , horizontally?

General :: How To Have A Mix Of Linked And Not Linked Files Without Linking Every File

Feb 20, 2010

I've got a shared (Windows/multiuser Linux) laptop, and I've got installed World of Warcraft and some steam games in Windows. With steam games, there is (almost) no problems. I've installed steam in Linux, and soft linked the 'steamapps' directory (per-game compatibility is another issue). With WoW, the problem is different. I would like to have almost (but not) all files. Under World of Warcraft, every file and directory must be linked except the Interface directory and WTF/config.wtf file (so every user can play with their own settings and addons). How can I have a mix of linked and not linked files without linking every file? If I link manually every file/dir, when updating from Linux other users and Windows Wow is not updated; when updating from Windows, new files remains "unlinked".

General :: How Can I Make Window Span Over Both Monitors

How can I make a window span over both monitors? I have the monitors configured using the KDE monitor setting tool. I need specifically full-screen (for presentation purposes) or at least a maximized window. Kwin insists on locking the window on one desktop.interestingly it really is Kwin preventing me to do this. If I get rid of KDE and just launch a plain X session, the window maximizes correctly.

OpenSUSE :: Kmail To Firefox - Url Is Linked To Temp Cache Files

Aug 30, 2011

I'm using Opensuse11.4 and have kmail and Firefox. When I click a url: link in kmail it opens a new tab in Firefox. The problem is that the url is linked to my temp cache files as this file:///var/tmp/kdecache-terry/krun/1589.0.ctt

The tab this opens has most of the link icons stripped out and the links to other parts of the website don't work and I get a "file not found" error and the link is to a file which doesn't exist file:///contribute.php3

This is only a minor annoyance as I can right click > copy the url and paste it to the address bar in Firefox then it works ok. I don't think it anything in either programme that's broken because this happened after an update to Opensuse 11.4 on my previous laptop and has happened again on my new laptop with a fresh install.

General :: Multiple Monitors - Make Open Programs Appear In Taskbar ?

Aug 4, 2010

Normally when a program is open an entry is placed on the taskbar in order to easily find it, which is useful when a lot of programs are open. In Ubuntu 10.04, when I moved a program to the other monitor (I'm using 2 monitors) the taskbar entry also moves to the taskbar on that monitor.

Now I switched over to Ultimate Edition, which is Ubuntu 10.04 with a lot of stuff added to it. When I drag a program to the other monitor, the entry in the taskbar disappears, but it does not reappear in the taskbar of the other monitor. So now the only way for me to find a program on this monitor if its hidden behind other windows is to use alt-tab.

Software :: Dual Monitors - Make An Application Automatically Open On Second Monitor?

Jul 20, 2011

I am using Fedora 15 with dual monitors. I want to make an application open automatically on the second monitor. In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?

I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.

I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Setting Up Two Monitors?

opensuse V11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop x86_64
ati radeon hd4770 256 MB
viewsonic vp201b/vp2030b

I was hoping to set up two monitors, 1600x1200 each -> 3200x1200 virtual. When I attempt to do so, I get the message (paraphrased since I cannot copy it) "required virtual size does not fit available size: requested (3200, 1200), minimum (320, 200), maximum (1600, 1600)".

1600x1600? That's an odd limit.

There seems to be more than enough RAM to accommodate the requested size.

What is the limiting factor? Can it be bypassed?

OpenSUSE :: Wallpaper Over 2 Monitors In KDE4 - SuSE 11.1

Jan 2, 2009

Both monitors are operational, and function fine from an application point of view (3200x1200 res), but KDE refuses to display my wallpaper over both monitors. In fact, I cannot set the wallpaper for my second monitor at all (it's stuck to the default green SuSE wallpaper or a fixed color). As a side effect: widgets also refuse to be moved from one monitor to the next. Applications can be moved fine, even put half on one monitor and half on the other, but the widgets and the wallpaper refuse to cooperate. This worked fine for me with SuSE 10.3.

OpenSUSE :: LXDE Changes Qinternet Display On Different Monitors?

Jun 25, 2011

The following describes odd behavior in my opinion, but I'm not sure where this question belongs. How can a monitor affect the loading of application SW? Can I get some help to fix the following problem here?I installed lxde on a P3 with a Gem 17" CRT monitor. LXDE runs on top of opensuse 11.4. On a P4 box I installed kde with 11.4, both from the same DVD. The P4 OS was installed using Vivitron 1776 17" CRT monitor.

Both boxes use qinternet for connection to DSL. Qinternet is set to autostart and its icon displays in the taskbar system tray. I bought a ViewSonic E70 17" CRT monitor for the P4 and put the Vivitron on the P3.Now the P3 displays the qinternet icon in a small terminal instead of loading it into the system tray as before. Of the three 17" CRT monitors I have, only with the Gem will the P3 (LXDE) system display qinternet in the system tray. The P4 system (KDE4) can run any of the monitors and still put the qinternet icon into the system.Qinternet is a binary file, but if i "less" it, I can see references to kinternet, so I think it's KDE4 SW. LXDE may be the culprit, or maybe the behavior will involve xorg

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Cannot Run Dual Monitors With NVidia-gfxG02 Proprietary Drivers?

Mar 15, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 with standard KDE and two screens attached. Here's the question: How do I configure dual monitors when using the proprietary nVidia drivers? The openSUSE 11.4 installation put in the "nouveau" drivers for my nVidia card and I was able to configure dual monitors using KDE's Configure Desktop --> Display & Monitors GUI configurator. I could also set up dual monitors using a script based on xrandr (e.g. "xrandr --output VGA-1 --auto --pos 0x0 --output DVI-I-1 --auto --pos 1920x0")My screens are detected as VGA-1 and DVI-I-1 by the nouveau drivers.

OK, today I switched to the proprietary nVidia drivers. Only one of the screens is now detected and displayed in the KDE monitor configurator and that's marked as "default" rather than as a VGA or DVI connection. When I run xrandr to configure monitors, I get error messages if I refer to VGA or DVI hardware.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Dual Monitors - Left Monitor Not Coming Out Of Powersave?

Sep 7, 2011

I have a really strange X (?) problem. My physical setup is:

Dell Optiplex 990
VisionTek 210 nV DMS59 PCIe video card (with a DVI splitter)
dual Dell P2411H monitors

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (x86_64 fully patched) with the current nvidia drivers and kernel module. I'm running KDE and kdm in case that matters.

If I power off the two monitors, and then power them on again, the right monitor will come back on. The left monitor (which is the primary one... it's the one where the login screen appears when you are first logging in) reports that it is in power save mode. Wiggling the mouse, typing, etc., do not wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up is the detach the DVI cable from the monitor and reattach it (and sometimes it takes a couple tries).

I have used two (identical) video cards and splitters, and the problem occurred with both, so the problem doesn't appear to be with either of them. I also swapped monitors, but after the swap, the problem still occurred on the left monitor, and the old left monitor (which was now right) came on fine, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor problem.

I'm baffled. For now, I just won't turn off the monitors (or at least not the left monitor).

General :: Listing All Linked Files

Jan 21, 2010

I can't seem to find a way to do this, so maybe it's not actually possible, but I was wondering if there was a way to list all files that link to a file.

For example.

touch a
ln a b
ln a c

I want to find out what files link to a (not symlinks, mind you), assuming that this is more complicated (they are spread around to different directories).

I kind of understand about the filesystem storing links in one area and data in another, so I understand it probably takes more work to find a link from a file location than the other way around.
