I read over the installation instructions given here. However, they make reference to two versions: openSUSE 11.3-IA32 and openSUSE 11.3-AMD64. I have a 64-bit Intel system; are these instructions only for AMD chips, or do they refer to something else?

I've got, from Nvidia, the 64bit driver for my card. After typing, sudo sh <filename>, I get, cc not in your path. What do I need to do, is this a C compiler? Isn't gcc already installed by default. I just installed OpenSUSE within the hour. Totally new to SUSE, and almost new to Linux. Just trying to give several distros a trial run.

I installed openSuSE 11.4 x86 on my computer (Intel Dual-Core 2,5 Ghz; Nvidia 7300 GS) and after installing graphical drivers (proprietary) I can't load the system. All I have is a progress bar of user's profile loading and playing the startup sound. I already installed openSUSE 11.4 x86_64 version on this computer and there was no problem with drivers.

the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.
How do I check if I'm using the Nouveu driver or the Nvidia Binary driver? I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? Actually, scratch that last sentence. I just did lspci -v and got this output:

I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?
[A word of explanation: initially the post below followed a post by Adam Williamson in another thread devoted to inability to load GNOME 3 in VM; this is why I address Adam in the opening.]
Adam, the situation with the GNOME 3 support for Intel integrated graphics seems to be a little confusing. You are probably among the most competent to clarify it.
Let me tell my own story first.
I was installing earlier today Fedora 15 on an HP dm4-1160US laptop with i5 and Intel graphics, and the anaconda installer hung right after "Waiting for hardware to initialize..." flashed on the screen, before even Media Check screen was reached. I tried a few times, always with the sae result: anaconda hung. Then I decided to add nomodeset to the boot parameters and the anaconda installer went on and I was able to complete the installation without a slightest problem.
I rebooted and without a problem reached the GDM login screen. When logging into GNOME, a pop-up window informed me that the system was unable to load GNOME and that instead I would be logged into the fall back mode. By the way, I haven't experienced the problems that plagued "Classic GNOME" on another laptop of mine where instead of clean install I preupgraded from Fedora 14 (strictly following the guidelines for preupgrading).
Wireless card was recognized and wlan initialized, nearby wireless networks seen, yet I wasn't able to connect to my own wireless network (I tried to do this already in the process of installation, equally unsuccessfully).
I was able to connect via Ethernet cable, and then I proceeded to perform yum update.
The update brought a new kernel. I went into grub.conf and noticed that nomodeset has been automatically added to the boot parameters for each of the two kernels. I decided to perform an experiment: I removed nomodeset from the boot options for the new kernel, and left it in place for the anaconda installed kernel.
I rebooted into the new kernel. Right after the grub menu disappeared, the screen turned pitch black and stayed this way for good 10 seconds. I thought that the former situation repeats itself making impossible to boot without the nomodeset option. Suddenly, the screen lit up and the GDM login screen appeared.
I logged into a shiny GNOME 3 where I am writing these words right now. Ah, and I was also able to connect to the wireless (I made yet another attempt using the network manager applet -- this time it worked).
What does that seem to indicate? That GNOME 3 support is already available for Intel graphics chips? But one may need to play with the nomodeset cheatcode, as I described this above?
I tried it on my machine, just for lols, and was surprised at the result. I have nVidia driver 195.22 installed the "hard" way (We really should stop calling it that, it is simple pimples!) but:

I'm setting up Suse 11.2 on PC w/ an Nvidia GT 240. I used the 1-click installation, found it didn't work, then discovered this thread saying the 240 requires the newest beta driver, 195.30, which is not available yet in 1-click and has to be manually installed.
However, that driver is no longer available on Nvidia's download site, either through their menu or the direct link given in the forum thread:

Nor do I see it in the Nvidia repository.
why it was removed? Is there a major problem with it? If not, any idea how I can get it?

I've got 11.3 going and I am mostly enjoying it. I was thrilled when I noticed that with KMS, I could see the boot process and the other vterms on my external monitor. Sadly, the nouveau driver doesn't seem to work for KWin/KDE compositing/desktop effects. Additionally, VDPAU was no go.
So, I set the nomodeset option for grub and chanked the KMS option in the sysconfig settings. The nvidia driver now works (along with composite/VDPAU stuff).
That being said... knowing I could have my external monitor work in those other areas of use is really bugging me.
I don't know much about KMS... is there any process (or if not, foreseeable future) where I could use KMS and the nvidia driver?
I get this error on enabling nVidia repo and downloading driver from YaST.

And the new video driver from nVIDIA no longer is outputting any error message when it is installed as was the case with 270.41.6. So, it is worth a try I do believe to go with the new version. i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
I have been bashing my head against the keyboard for over 6 hours now i just got a brand new asus ul30v it uses Nvidia geforce G 210M.
I went straight to installing ubuntu 10.10 on the whole disc. when the installation was complete i was happy and logged in. only seconds after i logged in i was promted that i was recomended to install a driver for my graphic card, for 3d and such. so i followed the installation and was asked to reboot. so i did. but then ubuntu booted straight into fullscreen terminal.
While being in this terminal i have tried to purge and reinstall GDM amongst endless other things, including rebooting several times.
Not being able to do anything about it, i reinstalled, and repeated the installation of the driver. same story over again.
Bottom line is i have rebooted close to 30 times, and reinstalled over 5 times. ive tried installing from the terminal (excactly the same story). tried to download it from their homepage, then install it (couldn't install it because i had to turn off driver X and "terminate all OpenGL applications", wich i dont know how to do. tried googling it, but ended up worse than before..[url]
Im guessing i cant install the driver at all with ubuntu 10.10? i havent tried it with older ubuntu versions because, of course, i wanted the newest version.
I have barely been using ubuntu before, although i've had it dualbooted.
I have found alot of posts with people getting stuck in terminal on boot, but none of the solutions that worked for them worked for me, probably because they had different problems than me.
I have installed SUSE 11.3 and I am using KDE4. I also installed the font "misc-console".
After installing the NVIDIA driver 256.53 the font misc-console becomes useless because it is displayed so much slanted that it is imposible to read. However, if I disable the NVIDIA driver (by replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in xorg.conf), then it works fine. It also works fine in KDE3 and the NVIDIA driver. So, it seems to be a combination between NVIDIA and KDE4. A lot other fonts are also overly slanted and unreadable (like "Sony fixed", "misc fixed", etc.).
If I launch konsole from a terminal, I receive the following warning:

Is there a way that I can use "misc-console" without having to uninstall the NVIDIA driver? I'm just used to this font for my terminal.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using a Dell Precision M65 portable workstation, often plugged to a docking station and with an external monitor attached. The graphic card is an nVidia Quadro FX 350M. I've been using openSUSE 11.2 until recently (with KDE 4.3.5). Then, during a routine update, the nVidia driver was upgraded from version 260.19.44 to 270.41.06. Desktop effects stopped working, and even after disabling them, some applications (presumably relying on direct rendering) do not work properly. I decided then to install openSUSE 11.4. The problems remain, with the additional issue that I can't switch anymore between the external monitor and the laptop display. I've tried several options using nvidia-settings; the original configuration when the system was working was "TwinView", "Cloned".

but glxgears, for instance, while giving very high FPS, produces only a black window instead of the usual rotating gears.

without success.
I also noticed that my card (Quadro FX 350M) is no longer in the list of supported cards for that driver (the closest I could find is Quadro FX 360). But, again, it may not be relevant for this issue. So, at this stage I'm considering downgrading to the previous version of the driver (260.19.44). Before doing that, however, I thought to check for configuring options I may have missed.

dkms is a facility which lets you to install drivers as module and it'll compatible with kernel upgrade.Driver will live as its source code in system,so after each kernel upgrade , driver module will recompile itself to work properly with new kernel.I read about dkms , but I have no experience to configure it by myself. I want to install nvidia driver using dkms,but I don't know how and where I can find source code of nvidia driver.
