Sep 5, 2010

OS: OpenSUSE 11.3
CPU: Quad Core 6700
RAM: 4 GB
Video: GF9800 GT
NVIDIA Driver Version: 256.53

Shell - Gnome (sometimes WindowMaker too - but i switch to Gnome now - because hoping about problem is in WM - but i can see now - is not a shell problem)
Composite extensions is OFF - in xorg.conf

Problem:
When I switch desktops the entire system for some time - 5 8 seconds freezes.
If I switch desktops are empty - all excellent.

Debian Multimedia :: Krunner KDE 4.4.3 - Slowness & Freezes

May 17, 2010

The most immediately apparent consequence of upgrading to KDE 4.4.3 is that Krunner is very slow or freezes completely. The run command from Lancelot is still quick and responsive and launches app's immediately, unfortunately Krunner takes an age to launch the application and sometimes does nothing at all.

Ubuntu :: Unbelievable Slowness After Boot / Speed Things Up?

May 20, 2011

For a while now, even before upgrading to 11.04, after booting everything was working so so slow for few minutes.
I'm turning on my computer and wait, its not like I'm starting opening programs or anything.

It takes 10-15 seconds to the terminal to open up, and for another 15-20 seconds its totally blank and I can't do anything. When it does finally opens, starting XAMPP takes too long.

It wasn't like that when I bought the laptop few months ago, everything was snappy and responsive.

The only software that starts on startup is Gnome-Do, besides it the list if full of some services..

So, to my questions:Is there any software that can investigate this slowness?
What can I do to speed things up?

OpenSUSE :: Can't Configure Taskbars For Multiple Desktops?

Apr 8, 2010

I am hoping I have a simple one to solve here! I've been looking around online, trying to find out how to configure multiple desktops to have their own taskbar. Most of my results suggest that I should be able to click on the menu, choose favorites, and go to Configure Desktop. In the new window, I should see a taskbar section on the left hand side?I am running OpenSUSE 11.2 on two machines and neither of them have this option. I just wanted to see if somebody knows where I can find the window to configure separate taskbars for each desktop?

OpenSUSE :: Changing Desktops/workspaces Freezes App?

Feb 2, 2011

for a month or so I have had a problem with the way that a programme interacts with (I think) KDE. If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. I thought it was due to a buggy update and that it would get sorted in time. The prog is a windows prog running flawlessy under Crossover, at least it was until this started. If is put all my open windows on the same desktop,

May 8, 2010

I use an MS mouse/keyboard combo model 6000 (ver. 2) and for the most part they work great, that is except for a problem with the mouse wheel scrolling through the desktops if the cursor is on a desktop. If the cursor is in/on a window it scrolls through the window as normal.t also scrolls through the desktops if I "side click" the mouse wheel as well. I've run sax2 and the mouse moduledoesn't even appear but my Wacom tablet settings do. Very perplexing to say the least.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M And NVIDIA Optimus Support?

Apr 3, 2011

I own an ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC that has an Intel HD IGP, nVIDIA GeForce GT 325M GPU, and nVIDIA Optimus technology. I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I used to be a former Ubuntu user. I used Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64 bit. In Ubuntu, it was not recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers because it would cause me to log into a TTY console upon reboot.

nVIDIA states that they have no plans to support Optimus technology in Linux at any time. Would it be recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers in OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME? Will I get the same problem as in Ubuntu? How do I do this?

OpenSUSE :: Map "Present Windows - All Desktops" Action Which Is Invoked By Activating The Top Left Corner Of Active Screens Via A Keyboard Shortcut?

Aug 25, 2010

Is it possible to map the same "Present Windows - All Desktops" action which is invoked by activating the top left corner of active screens via a keyboard shortcut? I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2

However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2

and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).
