How do I configure my modem without setting a service provider? When I try to configure my modem I can't get past the page for setting my internet provider. I have DSL and only use a modem for faxing. I'm running SUSE 11.3 32bit with KDE 4.5.2 and the modem is a BCM4212.
View 4 RepliesWhen installing Samba and Webmin I use the application "system-config-services" or (if it is easier to find for you that way) menu->Administration->Service management. In this application I can start the services I need (nmb, smb, webmin), but the enable/disable at startup setting is greyed out... Even when I start the application as root it still gives me no possibility to configure the services to start up on boot. This should be possible. It works this way in Fedora 13 and Fedora 14, so why not in Fedora 15?
Before reporting a bug, I would like to ask if other users here have the same problem (and -if possible- a solution)... In the mean tim I guess it is back to the old way of configurating services - sigh..
[edit] I tried to remove the [SOLVED] from the title, but the forum software does not seems to allow me to do that... I thought it was solved by installing xinetd, but I was happy a bit too early. I still have no answer for this problem.

Everything is working fine but it changed my IP address (which is ok) but it also changed my HOSTNAME (which is really starnge for me).And the problem with my tools is that with old connection it's working fine but with new connection GUI mode is not working, only batch mode is working.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the Huawei E160 UMTS Stick with a German SIM from O2. Actually it is a prepaid tariff where I can buy a daily data flat rate. And I am running Ubuntu 10.04 UNR. I use SMS to order and confirm a daily data flat rate and I made this working with gammu. Not the most comfortable but a very reliable solution (see In order to charge the my account or to check my account balance I can either use the Original Huawei Software under Windows or I can put the SIM in my mobile and dial a number code. By entering the code '4444' my UMTS account gets recharged with 10 EUR (debited form my bank account). With the code '*101#' I can check the account balance.
What I want to do: I want to be able to recharge my account and check my account balance with Ubuntu, so without taking the SIM out and putting it into a mobile phone (and obviously without using the original Windows software).Using gammu in order to send the necessary codes did not work so far. When entering gammu --getussd *101# I get the following result:

I am a newbie to linux and running ubuntu server 10.10 (no gui), I had it configured with a fixed ip address and all was fine till I changed internet poroviders and got issued with a new router.
I am trying to configure the server to reflect the new settings of the new service provider. here are the contents of /etc/network/interfaces

Just so I got this right can someone tell me if I am right here. address is the IP I wish to give to my server statically. and gateway is the ip of the router. When I try to ping the router I get

I have a lenovo desktop pc (WIN7) that I connect to the interrnet with. I have a custom built box (SuSE11.3). I have clear internet service and use a USB modem to connect to the internet. Clear does not make a Linux driver yet... I can connect to the Internet through VMware desktop with SuSE as the guest OS. However, I want to connect my other system to a router and my other PC. Would I be able to access the web with the linux box? I have a free NIC card on both pc's, I'm just not savvy enough to network them so if anyone could explain or tell me if it is even posssible to network the 2, My goal is to run SuSE on one, WIN7 on the other and access the internet from both.

I just started messing around with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit version, KDE environment).
My desktop computer has an internal fax/modem card (PCI version, mod. USR5610C). I am very confident that this card works with Linux and U.S. Robotics guarantees that much on their web site.
I connect to the Internet via DSL but I am attempting to set up the internal analog modem card as a back up should the DSL line be temporarily down. I went to YaST -> Modem and I see that my card was detected as "U.S. ROBOTICS 56K FAX INT Modem Not configured". I pressed Edit and the Modem Parameters page says that the device is in "/dev/ttyS4". I am not sure that this is indeed where the modem is located (is there a way to make sure?) but I accepted it and proceeded to entering the name of my Internet service provider, the access phone number, user name, and password. So far, so good -- I think!
Eventually, I come to a window where YaST2 wants to install the following:
* jack Jack-Audio Connection Kit v. 1.9.5-2.8
* smpppd SuSE Meta PPP Daemon v. 1.60.46-1.1.1
So far I have not installed them because of the Jack-Audio Connection Kit software. Do I really need to install it in order to get the modem working? The reason I am being careful is that I just spent weeks and weeks in trying to get my audio card (ASUS Xonar DX 7.1, PCI-E) to work with openSUSE and I sure do not want to mess things up and start all over again!

I have an encrypted partition which shows up in Dolphin file browser.But as a non-root user, I cannot unlock and mount it. A message in Dolphin comes up saying that a policy prohibits this. The idea is to fetch the mails from the least used address - on the provider's POP server - and forward it to the other address. He can use the SMTP server from the same provider to send off the forwarded mails.

It connects as "low level connection" , the indicator of kvpnc remains red, but then kvpnc would not pass the network traffic through umts-mon (or better vice versa, umtsmon doesn't). In principle I would like to pass both interfaces (wireless, umts) through vpn.

I am setting up Fedora-13 with "389 directory server" for authentication. I had performed the following steps.
1. Install FD-13.
2. Yum install 389-ds.
3. Run script to configure.
4. Start 389-condole and create few group and user for testing.
I can see these user with "ldapsearch" and with "phpldapadmin". It looks my server is responding. However, I am unable to see any user name with "getent passwd". also "ssh server_user@server" is not able to login. Whereas "getent passwd" shows local user and "ssh local_user@server" is able to login. Also note that I am not using ssl, so want to avoid ssl.
I am running Debian 6.0.1a on a Gateway SX-2841 (64-bit) and I would like to set up the Motorola SBV5220 modem using USB because the Ethernet port is used for a LAN (not on Internet). I am trying to follow the Cable Modem HOWTO. /var/log/messages lists CONFIG_USB_NET_CDCETHER=m, not exactly as shown in the HOWTO. lsmod does not list anything like either CDCEther or usbnet. I am hesitant to try running modprobe until somebody says this is the right thing to do.

Other applications are supposed to send an http request to this machine; this machine should pass this data (received over the http request) to the java application concerned, obtain the output from the app; and then send this response back to the requesting client...
We need to set this app as a service on startup. The centos machine might restarted from time to time; so we expect this service should startup automatically. What can I do to get this done?
I installed 10.10, I'm using a HP tower with a cisco usb ae1000 modem. I have been on Linux all of 12 hours. I had installed on a old laptop, and hard wired to the router. I really liked the OS. And Long short I killed the laptop, literally.
So I partitioned the family tower, but I cannot connect wirelessly. And to run hard wire to the router would mean a complete tear down of my desk and set up in the living room area, and that will not help out the marriage long/short term.

Now I need a domain which I have already bought, to be linked to that machine at [URL] I signed up with freedns.afraid.org and now I am a bit confused at what records to add where. I added a domain - [URL] then setup a webforward as follows: redirect from [URL] and redirect from[URL] to [URL] , however if you go and visit:[URL] you will see my problem! It takes you back to [URL] server and says there is not a webforward setup for [URL]This tells us that the nameservers are all setup fine - and its something in my freedns config which is failing.
