View 6 RepliesI'd like to buy an USB 2.0 external sound card It's not a multichannel-sorround, It would be just a 2-channel-stereo sound card that converts the USB signal in others digital audio signals (electric and/or optical) so that someone can connect their Hi-Fi or DVDplayer to their computers.
So... In particular, it would be a digital USB-to-SPDIF 24bit/96KHz and USB-to-AESEBU interface. I can tell you that similar USB 1.1 (16bit/48KHz) devices work all with Linux also. I'm not that sure about USB 2.0 interfaces. I know that ALSA drivers go up to 24bit/96KHz and that for sure some of these devices work with Linux also, but I can't tell anything about many others. These interfaces work with MacOSX, no-driver-required. QUESTION: is it true that every audio interface that works on MacOSX without requiring any additional driver, will work also on Linux for sure? I was told so once, by a friend of mine.
Does anyone know an Ubuntu 10.10 compatible video capture card that has composite connections for video and audio (yellow, red and white)? It must be external and do its own processing so it doesn't use the computer's own CPU. I intend to capture a live stream and have the Ubuntu PC serve it to other computers. I may use VLC or MythTV. I have looked on various related sites but finding a compatible USB one which does its own decoding is hard to find.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I have a Dell PowerEdge 840 that has no sound card. I would like to install a completely compatible sound card. I have not been able to find any recommendations for compatible sound cards on these forums, but I have learned that the C-Media chipset is supposed to be well-supported by Linux. There are C-Media sound cards on e-bay for under $10. I was considering a 6ch c-media 5.1 surround sound 3D PCI sound card. I believe the chipset is CM8738. Does anyone know whether this card is supported in F12? Or does anyone care to share any recommendations for sound cards that are known to be compatible with Fedora 12?
My intention is to be able to install a decent, inexpensive, commodity sound card that is known to be compatible with Fedora 12. I would prefer to purchase and install one that I know works rather than guessing and then fiddling with it forever and asking a lot of questions that could have been avoided.
Surprisingly, this information has been very hard for me to find. I understand that there is no Fedora hardware compatibility list, but it seems that a very brief list of hardware that is know to be compatible with the most recent release or two of Fedora could save a lot of time and resources. The purpose of such a brief list wouldn't necessarily be to see if a certain piece of hardware is compatible, but to find a component that is know to be compatible, so as to easily be able to get a completely functional system up and running.
My old sound card just broke and I am planning of buying a new one, a 5.1. I was wondering what sound card would you recommend for debian squeeze not more than 40 euros. I was thinking of this HERCULES MUSE 5.1 that is about 35 euros is that complatible with debian/linux? View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
I have decided to move my laptop over to openSUSE after a terrible experience with Vista. I have some experience with Ubuntu, but I'm a brand new suse user. I installed 11.3 but haven't been able to get any sound out of it. The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ45-307tx (more specs at link below) [URL] The first thing I tried was I updating the alsa firmware using the konsole command "zypper install alsa-firmware". The firmware updated fine, but still no sound. The next thing I tried was editing a file based on the advice found at the link below. View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running Amarok 1.4 and I frequently need to restart the sound daemon. As far as I can tell; no applications are using it at the time, but alsa cycles through my playlist without playing anything (i.e. loads track, doesn't play it, moves to the next track, so on and so forth).
I'm pretty sure this would have something to do with another process using the sndcard. I just don't know which one so I can kill it and troubleshoot why it's doing it.
I have 2 sound cards : one is on board and other is Creative sound blaster.I want to play sounds just on Crative.The problem is when I reboot the PC the sound is change,sometime the default sound card is Creative sometime is the onboard card.I want my default sound card to be only Creative.

View 1 Replies View Relatedso here I go I'm looking at upgrading from my onboard sound on my Dell Optiplex Gx620 to either a Sound Blaster Audigy SE by Creative, or an Asus Xonar DG (I've read bad things about this card so any experience of this under 11.4 would be fantastic).
I need low profile size cards as my little Dell is the Desktop variety. I'm not fussed about the bracket, I normally take them off if there's no LP Bracket in the box It's main use will be playback of lots of music as well as some movies. The sound is going to my Sherwood Hi-Fi amplifier, so just a better output is what I'm looking for, to make music a bit more enjoyable
This is a Dell Optiplex 380 desktop with an ICH7 family 82801G sound card. If I install openSUSE 11.3 or HIGHER, the OS will properly auto-configure the card and the sound is fine. However, 11.3 or higher also has an issue playing back full-screen flash video as well as 11.2 (may be a 64-bit related issue?). I suspect that the problem lies somewhere in the fact that this PC was produced considerably after the release of oS 11.2 so it's not detecting the card right.
I have gone so far as to enable a repo newer than the SUSE version to attempt to upgrade the ALSA components. I guess what I can do is throw in a live CD for 11.3 or 4 and go into YaST or 50-sound.conf and try to see what's going on or just copy it to a flash drive. I have a feeling that might get me farther than jerking around with this any longer.
I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.3, everything went fine untill last step : configuring hardware. So my install hangs up at the point "starting sound card" (well it is in french, but it should be this translation in english). My sound card is a classical realtek hd audio card (from a laptop toshiba x200). In the terminal(/dev/tty1) I can see that it is hanging at Starting Yast2. I had no pb with my previous installs regarding the sound card (with openSuse 11.2 and earlier). what to do to have this step working, or at least have the sound card not started at this point.

Here, "enable_msi=1" was not initially included in sound.conf, I added. After adding I find that volume change buttons are working, but sound is not coming. Mixer channels are all set to active mode and vol is MAX to 100. Mixer channels show two tabs -- one showing HDA_Intel and the other showing HDA_ATI_HDMI. Mic Jack mode is Line_in.
I have an issue with my Sound on OS 11.2.It is correctly recognized under hardware and the driver seems to start properly as well when I do rcalsasound start.But under Control Center / Sound Preference there is no audio hardware listed (and hene no sound playing)

It starts normally and I can use it without further problems, until it randomly stops working. I don't know what causes it to stop working, it just does. Then, if I go to YaST>Hardware>Sound (it shows I have a 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller), press edit then reset, it works again!
I've been doing this for like 4 months, but I'm growing tired of doing it and not being able to just sit back and enjoy music on the amarok. I don't know what should I report, so that's why I only say the sound card identification.
A few days ago I setup a pc. It contains an "Intel ICH5" sound card. Before I begin posting all the configuration stuff I've tried so far what the standard procedures are to set it all up for recording the sound card output (with Audacity)?
On my older computer it all worked fine but now I only get silent recordings. However sometimes (when I played on the controls the right way...) I get recordings where you can (amoung some noise) recognize the stuff I actually wanted to record very low... Apart from Audacity I've also tried

Had a well working sound system until I bought a USB webcam with microphone. Sound still works well except with flash. As mentioned here my problem is making flash use my normal sound card instead of the USB webcam microphone.

The card appears under System->Preferences->Sound->Hardware but there are two unusual things (if I remember correctly). 1. The green sound card icon on the left is not shown, it's not gray, there is nothing (but the USB Headset, that works well, doesn't have the icon either so maybe it'ok).
2. From the Profiles dropdown I can only choose from four options (off, analog mono, analog stereo and digital duplex). Before there were more (digital output only, etc.).I checked the levels several times. Another external USB card (SB Xi-Fi 5.1) works well.
Has anyone ever experienced an issue with a Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value Dell OEM sound card, models SB0200 and SB0203, using the EMU10K1X chip that causes any multimedia application (Amarok) or flash web site where the audio plays back way too fast?
I tried this on two different Dells, a Dimension 4600 and Dimension 8300. The only variable that was a constant was the Creative card. I took the OEM card out and put in another card, audio playback speed was fine. The only reason I am asking, even though the OEM card is slightly inferior, it has the front panel multimedia connector pins on the OEM card. Thus, if I use another card, either the front panel multimedia jacks become unusable or I have to turn on the integrated sound in the BIOS and run two sound cards.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
Until yesterday, my Audiophile sound card was working beautifully. I ran the latest update, and now it doesn't show up under Sound Preferences. (When I plugged in a USB headset, that appeared under Sound Preferences and worked just fine.)
The sound card IS listed under aplay -l.

If I run Alsamixer from the terminal, the correct Audiophile sound card is the one shown.
I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.
