Ubuntu :: Horizontal Scroll Does Not Work (two Finger) But Vertical Does

Jan 20, 2011

I have gpointing devices 1-4 installed on ubuntu 10.10. The vertical and horizontal scrol both used to work. I have the latest 1.1.1 dkms synaptics driver posted in that bug forum. But now the horizontal scroll using two fingers does not work at all. I have it checked under mouse settings AND in gpointing devices. Is this a known bug?

Apparently I can't delete this. It has been solved. Smooth scrolling in Chrome kills horizontal scrolling

Hardware :: Vertical Flutter & Scroll On External (TV) Monitor

Mar 19, 2011

I (very!) recently installed Mandriva (10.1) on my old-ish HP tx1000 laptop, and cannot connect it to my TV (via the usual external VGA connector) without considerable picture distortion: the image scrolls and wobbles, as if the vertical adjustment is faulty. (One used to get this effect with one's TV if the antenna wasn't properly adjusted.)

I can see both monitors in "Monitor Preferences" - and have tried playing with the parameters available there (there is a general refresh rate setting, but nothing to adjust vertical rate alone), without having any effect on the scrolling distorted image. I can drag windows back and forth between the two monitors, though only the laptop one is usable.

Debian Hardware :: Disabling Scroll Wheel On Mousepad On HP Pavilion Laptop

Aug 28, 2014

I have a HP Pavilion Dv71245dx Laptop running Debian Wheezy, which has been alright so far except for the mouse wheel built into the right side of the touch mousepad. It's positioned in such a way that makes my thumb hit it all the time by accident while typing, and it's been a total nightmare. I would just like to disable the scroll wheel feature on this mousepad entirely, but I would like to do so in such a way that I can still use the scroll wheel on my USB mouse whenever I have that plugged in.

Ubuntu :: Scroll Tab Vanishes Before Can Click On It To Scroll Down

Jun 3, 2011

The new scroll tab that 11.04 has appears when you hover over the orange area on the scroll bar. The scrolling arrows are gone.Well this scrolling tab often vanishes before I can click on it to scroll down. Is there a way to revert to the old style, like the scrolling mechanism on these forums? It is nice to have the option of the arrows on top and bottom, along with the scroll tab thing.

OpenSUSE :: KDE4 Menu's Unreadable.Transparent Vertical Stripes Using "Oxygen"

Apr 26, 2011

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a new system. Everything is plain-jane default KDE4, but there is a video problem. Driver? Hardware? KDE? Some menu's, most notable the right-click on the desktop, but also k-launcher and other programs have a transparent pinstripe background letting whatever is behind show through. This makes the menu unreadable. A couple screen shots of the problem in on this photo stream:

snapshot1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

It is really weird, and makes the system unusable, so I am surprised I can not find any prior references. If it is a driver problem, then surely I am not the first to encounter it. That makes me suspect hardware. (I know, it's never hardware...) If you look close at the photos. you can see that there are pinstripes that are OK, and in between it is transparent and the dark desktop is visible. This is only for first 6-8 items in drop down menu's, but menu bars sometimes have a pinstripe two tone effect where i think same thing is happening.

1. The disk checks out, MD5 verified, and reinstalled with same results.

2. I ran a memtest and memory checks out.

3. It is consistent, in that the same menu's have the problem in the same place for a few days now, but there are occasions when the menu is readable for an instant.

4. Not much to try in BIOS, but no effect from changing video memory size.

5. No other issues. Firefox menu's are fine, and firefox browsing is fine.

6. The system is an Intel i3-2100 with graphics on the CPU. Motherboard is an MSI-H67. Everything is new, recent manufacture (B3 stepping)

If I switch Open Gl mode from "texture from pixmap" to "shared memory" the whole display becomes unreadable, but I have no idea if that is expected or relevant. ++++++ OK, while writing this I found a workaround, but I still want to know what is happening. If I switch System settings -> Application appearance -> Style -> Application -> Widget Style from the default of "Oxygen" to any other option (CDE, Cleanlooks, Motif,...) the problem goes away. Oxygen has a slick look, but I can live without that, I still wonder if it is using a graphics feature that is not working on my hardware. Or maybe just a driver problem, but this is a very common graphics system.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mouse Scroll Drag Not Working After 11.4 Install

May 7, 2011

I have a recent installation of openSUSE 11.4_64bit with KDE as desktop environment and like in all other linux distros my mouse middle button has a problem when clicked and dragged. The effect that it does when I click in the scroll button and move up and down is the same as when I rotate the button and it does nothing when I move to the side. Usually in programs like google earth (just an example) this is a very useful function as is used to set direction to navigate and angle and then this setting just does zoom when moved up/down and nothing else. It is also very annoying that every time that I click the middle button in a browser it goes back to the previous search in the default browser search engine. I already tried some setting in yast but no difference and forum search didn't retrieved a lot of info.

OpenSUSE Network :: Firefox Wheel Scroll & Arrow Display?

My problem is that in Firefox: I have Firefox 3.6.12 when i scroll down using the mouse scroll wheel (not up?) most of the time, but not all the time i get horizontal lines instead of the "real picture". This also happens when i use my keyboard's down arrow key.

When i go slower it seems to happen less often. Also if i click off the page and back on again the display is fine. Is this problem my graphics card? Firefox? or my mouse/keyboard?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Disabling Password On Resume From Suspend

Nov 9, 2010

I've set up a media box for mythtv based on OpenSUSE 11.3 and LXDE. By default, the screen gets locked prior to a suspend. On resume, therefore, the screen is locked and requires a password to unlock. I need to disable this action. In KDE4, I can do that by going to the power management settings and un-selecting the appropriate check box. In LXDE, however, I can find no such settings. There must be a config file somewhere that I can tweak to turn off the screen lock prior to suspend, but I have no idea what it is.

OpenSUSE Network :: IPV6 Disabling In Suse In General?

Apr 10, 2011

I've had a hell of a time with this and now all but YAST2 are ok. Going back some time to 10.0 this could be used to disable it very completely.

open terminal and run
echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
echo "alias ipv6 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

restart computer. Has anyone used this on more recent issues even 11.4 and are there any repercussions?I assume that the inverse will but it back on ie off's just become on's? I will be using cups when I install my printer which is one concern and I am not at all sure that modprobe will do anything anymore?

I also recollect that there is a command to cause the kernel to effectively reboot which would save restarting. Can't remember what it is. Maybe some one can refresh my memory.

OpenSUSE Install :: Disabling Preload To Avoid Very Long Startups?

May 10, 2011

For a number of openSUSE releases now, on a periodic basis (monthly, it seems?) both my laptop and my desktop take forever to start. During this time, the hard disk activity is going berserk. When inspecting this with "iotop", a process called "preload" or "start_preload" is hammering the disk, sometimes up to 10 minutes.

The irony is when you research "preload", you find mostly articles like "drastically speed up your Linux system with preload"- I sometimes think it has to do with running VMs on these machines and maybe it's trying to cache those large disk images? Pure speculation, but I can't seem to find any documentation on this.

Anyway, I did finally find a way to turn this thing off. WARNING: since I do not know exactly what preload does and whether your machine becomes unusable if you turn it off, please only follow these instructions at your own risk. Since preload seems to be a very low-level system/service, I did not want to risk uninstalling it. What I did instead was:

Yast2 - System Services (RunLevel)
Click the Expert Mode radio button
Scroll down to the boot.startpreload entry

[code].....

Since I applied these steps, no long boot times with insane hard disk activity has occurred and I also have not noticed anything else complaining or not working with this service off.

OpenSUSE :: Disabling Screen Lock / Enable Display Power Management?

Sep 14, 2009

I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. Nor is it clear which does what and whether all are needed or not. There is a town hall down the road where fellow homeowners gather to discuss what each has managed to deduce about putting their own furniture together. The town hall has a sort of library where thousands of pieces of paper with instructions are stored in an ad-hoc filing system

My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts. However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Get X To Start On Acer Aspire 5100

Dec 21, 2009

Had the RC versions of 11.2 running on my laptop but now the release version is out X no longer installs properly, it gets so far through the installation but then goes to a black screen which is totally unresponsive. If I force a power-off/on it only comes up in text mode and I cannot get X to start automatically. I can get startx to work if I manually reconfigure sax2 using 0=radeon but no way can I get this to happen at startup. Seems a very retrograde situation and something that completely got past quality control.

Probably the end of my time with OpenSuse having been a user for over 5 years, at least Ubuntu installs straight in with no problems whatsoever - exactly what I would have expected from OpenSuse.
