OpenSUSE :: KDE4 Menu's Unreadable.Transparent Vertical Stripes Using "Oxygen"
Apr 26, 2011
I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a new system. Everything is plain-jane default KDE4, but there is a video problem. Driver? Hardware? KDE? Some menu's, most notable the right-click on the desktop, but also k-launcher and other programs have a transparent pinstripe background letting whatever is behind show through. This makes the menu unreadable. A couple screen shots of the problem in on this photo stream:
snapshot1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
It is really weird, and makes the system unusable, so I am surprised I can not find any prior references. If it is a driver problem, then surely I am not the first to encounter it. That makes me suspect hardware. (I know, it's never hardware...) If you look close at the photos. you can see that there are pinstripes that are OK, and in between it is transparent and the dark desktop is visible. This is only for first 6-8 items in drop down menu's, but menu bars sometimes have a pinstripe two tone effect where i think same thing is happening.
1. The disk checks out, MD5 verified, and reinstalled with same results.
2. I ran a memtest and memory checks out.
3. It is consistent, in that the same menu's have the problem in the same place for a few days now, but there are occasions when the menu is readable for an instant.
4. Not much to try in BIOS, but no effect from changing video memory size.
5. No other issues. Firefox menu's are fine, and firefox browsing is fine.
6. The system is an Intel i3-2100 with graphics on the CPU. Motherboard is an MSI-H67. Everything is new, recent manufacture (B3 stepping)
If I switch Open Gl mode from "texture from pixmap" to "shared memory" the whole display becomes unreadable, but I have no idea if that is expected or relevant. ++++++ OK, while writing this I found a workaround, but I still want to know what is happening. If I switch System settings -> Application appearance -> Style -> Application -> Widget Style from the default of "Oxygen" to any other option (CDE, Cleanlooks, Motif,...) the problem goes away. Oxygen has a slick look, but I can live without that, I still wonder if it is using a graphics feature that is not working on my hardware. Or maybe just a driver problem, but this is a very common graphics system.

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.
Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.
My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

It started many months ago on wheezy. Occationally I got horizontal stripes on my screen when I used my system for many hours switching from one application to an other. Now, after I installed Jessie this problem hasn't gone away, but got worse. Now I don't need to use my system for hours before I encounter this effect. Different parts of my screen get unreadable without any predictable pattern.
Friens of mine argued this might happen because of a broken RAM chip. I bought my Acer Extensa 5220 in 2008. I'm not sure if it's worth to search for new RAM fitting into this old notebook.

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

Today I installed KDE 4.6.3. (OpenSuse 11.4). With this version a modified oxygen icon set was installed. Some icons, e.g. folders, are looking very ugly. They are looking a little bit like Tango icons. This mixture of original oxygen icons and the "tango-oxgygen" ones looks very inconsistent. You can repair this by installing the KDE 4.6.0 oxygen icon set (oxygen-icon-theme, oxygen-icon-theme-scalable) coming with OpenSuse 11.4. Yast is showing some problems regarding KDE 4.6.3. you can ignore them.

I am using OpenOffice 3.2.1 and Opensuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. When I use the KDE4 integration and the oxygen icon set, I'am getting a mixture of oxygen (KDE4) icons and crystal (KDE3) icons in the symbol panel (I hope this is the correct word in english). E.g. the icons for "bold", "italic" or underlined are crystal icons instead of oxygen. I had the same "problem" with Opensuee 11.2 and older OpenOffice versions.
Interestingly, when I start OpenOffice in my root account, OpenOffice shows all icons correctly as oxygen icons. When creating a new user account (a test account), OpenOffice use the icon mixture. Also transferring the ".oo3" folder of root to my user account didn't solve the "problem". Of course, this is not a real problem with OpenOffice, it's more a desing error (but I like to solve it ). Who else has a mixture of oxygen and crystal icons?

I like when my environment looks nice so I don't understand why is half of system dialogs using Plastique theme and half Oxygen. For example when I run KpackageKit manually, it has Oxygen theme, but when it appears automatically to perform some updates, it has Plastique theme. It's really ugly. Is it somehow possible to unify it?

They tell me to go to the Opacity Settings tab an then enter certain values on dock, menu, dropdown, and popupmenu but i dont have those tabs.....

Just did a new install of 11.4 over top of my 11.3 and when I reboot into the OS it seems to boot just fine but the video is unreadable. When I boot into the failsafe the screen has a lot of gitter and the monitor tells me it's not in preferred mode of 1680x1050 at 60hz. All resolutions higher than 1280x1024 are unreadable. Tried booting nomodeset as I've read previous ... no luck. I'm still learning linux.

First of all, I'm new in Banshee and linux. When I import my music files from system files into Banshee playlist and play this track, the file is recognized as "unreadable" and mark with the "x" sign. There is no problem to import and play the music from the original cd's. I have no idea what is wrong. I'm using opensuse 11.2.

My old desktop had a power supply that was going bad, so instead of replacing it again I decided to buy a new PC Desktop. So I ordered from TigerDirect.com and got a grodd AMD computer without a operating system on it as I didn't want that Windows 7 scheisse on it. So I downloaded SuSe 11.4 64 bit, and installed it last night.
At this point I will tell you the new PC has an NVIDIA GeForce 61100 GPU for graphics with 128 mb memory. Also I use an HP W2007 wide display monitor running 1680 by 1050 resolution, that I got over 3 years ago when I was running SuSe 10.2.
So during installation last night of 11.4 when it did the first boot after install, is when I first saw the symptom which is an illegible white screen, with about 100 3 mm lines on it. So I shut down, rebooted and brought it up safe mode and all is fine. The error screen only appears if I boot GRUB with the Desktop or Xen option and only when the boot would switch to display my desktop.
I recall a similar illegible video monitor issue when I first got the display over 3 years ago, and fixed it by changing a SuSe video configuration option, but being I am getting old and I didn't write down what the configuration file was I am at a loss. All my previous SuSe installations never had a problem as I would always choose the Update rather than new install option thus that configuration file was brought across the many releases installations. This video configuration parameter had the monitor resolution sizes in it.

I was wondering if old revisions of KDE's oxygen theme are available. Specifically I am looking for the theme that shipped with KDE 4.1 (Kubuntu 8.10), and more particularly I am interested in the kicker theme. I attached a screenshot to show you what I mean. I virtualized Kubuntu 8.10 and grabbed all the themes from /usr/share/kde(4?)/aps/desktopthemes/ and transfered them to my main install, which is using kde 4.4.3, but themes where light colored (i.e. the kicker was light gray and didn't look anything like they did in KDE 4.1).
I don't think it is a compatibility issue because I compared the 4.1 themes with the 4.4 themes and they had the same directory structure and config file format (and the Elegance theme looked the same). So in short, does anyone know where I can download the Oxygen theme from KDE 4.1, or if there is something that I am doing wrong making the old version light colored on KDE 4.4?

I downloaded the oxygen cursors and oxygen cursors extras form the official ubuntu repos using synaptic. I am running gnome in ubuntu lucid with compiz and emerald. I installed them system wide by running
Code: sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme This means that they are displayed eveywhere. However, there appear to some bits missing from the cursor set. Specifically, the window resize icons and the drag and drop (move) icon. All other icons are displayed correctly. For the missing icons, it seems to fall back to the default ugly black x cursors. Has anybody else seen this, or have I installed these cursors incorrectly? Note I want to do this system wide so I have the same cursor even in my sudoed apps.

I have KDE 4.6.3 installed, but I'm not using KDE as my desktop (just Openbox).
For some reason, KDE's "Oxygen" theme isn't available in qtconfig. Also, KDE apps seem to be following the selection in qtconfig, not the one in KDE's System Settings.
I rember that before, qtconfig let you choose Oxygen, and KDE apps followed the choice in KDE System Settings (even if you were not using KDE).
Here's my .xinitrc code...
. What should I do to fix it?

I've installed Silkypix (tried 2.0 and 3.0SE) through Winedoors in Linux Mint Helena and keep getting coloured stripes across the photos. It actually works if I ignore these stripes but I wonder if it could be fixed...? I also tried Linux raw converters Rawtherapee and UFRAW but they don't seem as good, especially the noise reduction function. Can I fix Silkypix or is there another Linux software that is comparable?

I have a dell inspireon 1501 with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. Sometimes but not always when I boot up I will see colored stripes on the screen that don't go away. The only way to get rid of them is too close the lid of the laptop then open it up again. After I open the lid the stripes go away. Any way to get RID of the stripes?

I'm experiencing a wierd bug. Been having it for some time now. I haven't posted about it before since its only been annoying, but not really setting me back. And I have trouble defining and explaining the bug. Today it crossed the line into actual annoyance.
The bug occurs when I'm writing, using the keyboard on my laptop. Both when I write in browsers, like when writing this post, and when I write in openoffice. So its not limited to one program. In webbrowsers what happens is that all of a sudden the browser loads the previous page in the tab. Like I told it to go one step back. In OpenOffice something similar happens. The curser jumps up in the document.
I used to have this bug when touchpad-tapping was enabled. I have a habit of drumming my thumbs on the touchpad when typing. Therefore I've disabled tapping on the touchpad. The bug is reocurring, however I have not found a way to reproduce it. It might be a key combination I accidentally hit when typing away, but I'm not sure.

I installed Oxygen KDE in Firefox 4 but when I upgraded to Firefox 5 it was not compatible. The problem is that traces remain and I cannot get another theme to appear properly. I do notice that if I delete ~/.mozilla the problem is solved. However I have many addons installed and don't want to setup everything again. Also in ~/.mozilla/.../Firefox there is a folder named OxygenKDE and if I delete it, Firefox auto creates a new OxygenKDE folder on FF startup.

I 've recently installed UNR 10.04 Lucid Lynx in my old PC.
Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).
Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.
By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).
Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.
