I got an external enclosure to use an old hard drive as a usb external hard drive for backing up files to.mI tried deleting all the files but there are quite a lot that cannot be deleted Nautilus saying "permission denied".
The harddrive had/has ubuntu 10.4 on it.
Do i need to delete all the files & folders from terminal? I'm running OpenSuse 11.3 in gnome. So i've got Gnome Terminal.
I have a strange issue, when I run my build on my modules. GNU make keeps deleting the source *.c files from all of my modules. It says that they are intermediate files, and deletes them. I have the source files declared as such in the Makefile.
C_FILES = file.c
Anyway I can prevent this deletion?
I have 2 folders that are synced using rsync. Right now if I delete a file in the source folder, the destination folder still retains that file. Is there a way to get rsync to delete files if they were deleting at the source?I could not find anything in the man page.not sure if I'm missing something or if that feature just doesn't exist.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI run a dedicated opensuse 11.1 server with apache (2.2.10-2.9.1) installed. This box has been running for nearly 2 years hosting several low traffic websites. I must admit that I did not give lots of love/attention to the machine over that period. It ran rock solid. The different websites each have their own associated user account and are stored in their own /home/name/public_html/ folder. It was setup through Webmin. Each domain name is also linked to a unique IP (the box has multiple available IPs), however this is configured at my domain provider. All in all a very simple and straightforward setup that never let me down most of the past decade.
Recently the sites on the machine were no longer responding. This happens each other year or so since I write my logfiles to a separate partition. Was df -h and indeed, partition was full. Removed logfiles manually, and while I was at it I decided it was time to run an online update (yast2 / online update that is). Rebooted machine after yast telling me to do so. Sites are no longer working. Can no longer login to webmin. Only thing what works is the 'root' webpage (/srv/www/htdocs folder), which makes me rather clueless as the other sites are just not responding at all, not even a timeout or error message.While I know that deleting logfiles manually is quite stupid, I've done it fore and not really ended up in trouble.
Hence my questions: does this sound familiar to anyone and do you mind to give me a clue about where exactly I should start to look. It's been ages since I actually administrated apache, so I might overlook the obvious. Long story short: any tips are very welcome about what I should check first, what config files might have been changedith the update, etc ...

View 6 Replies View Relatedi've worked with Linux for a while now, but never in a double boot kind of way (except using wubi), and i'm still kind of a newby.i have 2 harddrivesfirst one has only 1 partition; Windows XPsecond one has 1 empty partition, simple storageand another partition where i installed fedora core, and GRUB is also located on this harddrive.I changed harddrive priority to my second harddrive, result:GRUB comes up, no problem, but when I try to boot windows, it tells mentldr is missing ctrl alt del to continueso i changed the harddisk priority back to the way it was, where the first drive containing windows is first priority... but then, no GRUB.i've tried editing the grub conf,i've tried fixboot/fixmbrtl;dr:no ntdlr when linux harddrive is main priorityno grub when windows harddrive is main priority
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently reinstalled (clean) Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala last week. In that time, over 40GB of log files were created until the FileSystem was full. I then received a low disk space message and ran disk usage analyzer to find out that almost all of the 44GB I had free were taken up by the /var/log directory. I then preceded to delete the 5 largest files which freed up over 40 GB of space.
Basically I believe that I have two problems:
1.) The log files are logging too much information (40 GB in one week).
2.) I need a way to automatically limit the size of the log files. I have tried searching online for this solution and briefly came across logrotate but I don't believe that this will completely solve my problem as it only compresses and backs up older logs. I need something that will remove old log entries altogether. If logrotate is capable of this can someone please walk me through the process? I do not remember all five log files that were in question but they did include: messages, syslog, and daemon.log. I believe kern.log may have been involved too.
I have a large collection of CDs that I ripped to mp3 a few years back. I would like to go sell them to a store and get some money for them (I haven't used the physical CDs in years). The deal is that when I started ripping the CDs, the program I was using would insert a 2 second delay between songs. I would like to know if there is a program/command that I can use to remove this delay between songs. Some of them have 0 delay, so songs that fade into each other sound correct. Other albums have songs that are supposed to seamlessly fade into each other, but they don't because of this delay. Is there any way to remove that delay between songs or do I have to re-rip the CD? Figuring out which albums have that problem and re-ripping the CD is going to take a very, very long time.

It turns out I caught the Linux bug. I'm now completely obsessed with it. Most of the time if I can't get something to work I do a quick web search, and I find the solution to my problem in the first link or three. This is the exception. I wanted to install XP or 2000 using Virtualbox OSE just in case I needed to look up something on Windows or print something off (can't find any drivers for my Lexmark printer). I tried XP first and it gave me an error. Then I tried 2000. At this point I went to delete the program and try again. The first thing I tried was sudo apt-get remove virtualbox. Then when I re-installed it, I still had my settings and partitions on there. I then went to the add/remove programs. Same thing after the third install. I then went to the Synaptic Package Manager and clicked completely delete files (or however it was worded). After the install it still did the same thing as the previous times. When I try and load Virtualbox it says "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted.". Also sometimes my pointer will get locked inside Windows. How do I get out of that? The only thing I was able to find was hit CTRL + ALT + Back and it exits both Windows and Linux.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am connecting to a Windows 2003 server share from my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. This is not a problem & deleting normal files is fine. What I am actually trying to do is remove a virus from this server. If I have AV software running on the server it is constantly picking up the virus & eventually this kills the server. The AV software is unable to remove the virus on the server, but is able to on desktop machines.Anyway, I thought use Linux to do the job & get the AV software back on the server. No go. I get a permission denied error when trying to remove the files with rm -f "filename"Is there anyway around this? I am reluctant to start the server with the Ubuntu live CD as it is in use as a file server. If I could remove the files manually this would be good.

sudo adduser fuse
sudo mkdir /mnt/remotedir

(obviously replacing the username and paths with my information)
I can connect to the remote computer however I cannot delete remote files to the recycle bin. What do I need to do in order to delete files to the recycle bin?
I'm using the command below to sync two directories. Problem is insted of deleting the files on the target directory it simply appends a ~ character at the end of the file name. Not sure why this is happening?I'd like to have all deletes on the source replicated on target.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently, I made a disk image of my external hard drive (as it had recently failed). I have yet to get it replaced, so I have a .dd file sitting on my computer. Now, I can mount the .dd file so I can access the files, but I cannot delete any of them. I want to be able to copy the files file by file to my normal folders and delete them from the backup file, as my disk isn't large enough for me to copy them all to the folders and just delete the entire file.
TL;DR = Can I/How do I delete individual files from a .dd backup.

Let me give you an example:

Those in bold are those I'd like to have removed, while the "L0619004.log" is obviously to be left intact.

I'd like to clean up apt/dpkg so that it doesn't think the package whose files I've deleted is still installed, but when I run:
