General :: Deleting All Files From Directory Except For Two
Nov 25, 2010
I'm writing a Perl script which performs linux commands.I have a directory with a load of files.
Code:exec_cmd('rm $(ls * | grep -v file1)');
This command will delete all except for file1. How can I modify this to delete all files except for file1 & file2?

I know that rm -i will prompt wether you want to delete each file.But rm -i -r will prompt for each file in each subdirectory recursively. How to make it prompt just for the directory itself, and then delete its contents without asking?How to delete all the files in a directory without deleting . and ..?How to recursively delete all tilde files in a directory?How to GUI file managers delete files to Trash? Where is this "Trash" located? Can you delete to trash in the command line?

We have an rsync cron job set up to mirror all the files in a "..dashtdocsdocs" folder to the same folder on another server. It copies all the files over correctly and deletes any files in the "docs" directory that aren't in the sending directory, but it also deletes any files we put in the target directory's parent folder (..dashtdocs or other subfolders like ..dashtdocsimages) even though they've been excluded in the .rsync-filter file.
Here's our current rsync .sh:
/usr/local/bin/rsync --stats -qPzrtpl --delete --password-file=/var/run/.appprodrsync --log-file=/export/home
/webuser/logs/rsync-extranet-log -FF /export/home/ appprodrsync@appprod::dprweb_extranet/ > /export/home/webuser/logs/rsync-extranet-output 2>&1
[code]....
So for example server A has ..dashtdocsdocs and ..dashtdocsimages. Server B has ..dashtdocsdocs but if I manually copy the images folder over to ..dashtdocsimages, the images folder gets deleted from the target directory every time rsync runs.
A: ..dashtdocsdocs
..dashtdocsimages
B: ..dashtdocsdocs
..dashtdocsimages (<-- gets deleted everytime rsync runs)
I'd like to keep just the docs directory synched and update other folders manually, but they keep getting deleted. It looks to me like it's running a delete-excluded option, but that option wasn't used.

I would like to delete a directory in emacs' dired-mode.
I mark the directory with the "d" key, and then hit "x" to deleted flagged.
I then get the following error:
Is there any way to get emacs to delete the directory and stop its whining?

I'm using the command below to sync two directories. Problem is insted of deleting the files on the target directory it simply appends a ~ character at the end of the file name. Not sure why this is happening?I'd like to have all deletes on the source replicated on target.

I have a question, that may sound silly. I have removed VirtualBox from my Ubuntu install. But the .VirtualBox folder is still existing with a virtual drive of nearly 10 GB. Can I manually remove the folder .VirtualBox with rm -rf without any unwanted side effects?

I copied a back up of my windows 'my documents' fold and all of its' sub folders into my linux (Mint Debian) Documents directory. I found that many of my files can be found in more that one directory so, what I want to do is to find all the dups and deal with them. Is there a good linux application to resolve this 'duplicates' problem. (I don't want to touch the linux system files.)

After running photorec I went from having ~30 gb of free space to having 0 bytes of free space. I have deleted all the results of photorec and various other large files and removed them from trash but it still has not freed up any space. Also, my firefox no longer has back/forward functionality which I'm sure would be fixed by a reinstall but seeing as I have 0 space, I can't really do that. Any thoughts?

I want to run a cronjob every 15 minutes that checks a directory for files. If the directory contains more than ten files I want it to send an email to me.
All I have is this...
*/15 * * * * ls -l | wc -l | [filename] | mail -s "This is just a test" [email address]
I would rather not write a bash script. Is there an easier way to do this? I was looking into some commands like find and grep.

I'm quite new to linux but I have configured a simple ftp server and it's working great. I have a FTP-Shared folder with upload and download subfolders. Under upload's and download's I have identical category subfolders like mp3's, movies, software etc. in both. As the guy's upload, I would like to create a line crontab where I can move all the content under /FTP-Shared/upload/mp3/* older than 14 day's to FTP-Shared/downloads/mp3/ recursively (Like in cp command), but the timestamp must be searched on the first directory and not sub files example: /mp3/Club Dance/CD1/Hallo world.mp3This is how far I got:[root@clients ~]# /usr/bin/find /FTP_Shared/upload/Mp3s/ -depth -mindepth 1 -mtime +14 -type d -exec mv -f {} /FTP_Shared/download/Mp3s/ ;This command moves the directory and files, but it is not recursively

I've followed some instructions on installing a new hard drive on Ubuntu ("Installing a New Hard Drive" and "HOWTO move /home to a new hard drive") and I've now successfully got my new drive working with /home. Everything looks to be in perfect working order.Now I'm wondering how to delete my original /home folder. Running "df -h" still shows 97% usage on my / partition and I'd like to clear out the old /home to free up all that space. I just don't know where these files are now is all.

I've got a directory with thousands of files and I want to delete those that contain specific text.When I try:Code: ls | grep -l "specific text" * | xargs rm I get the error: Code: /bin/grep: Argument list too long Is there an easy way to get around this without having to move files into seperate folders and processing them in batches? I found an article on getting around this problem, but I'm kind of new to Linux and don't know how to apply this to my specific problem.

[code]....
Now i would like to copy from dir1 to dir2, but the contents of dir2 would be:

I have a large collection of CDs that I ripped to mp3 a few years back. I would like to go sell them to a store and get some money for them (I haven't used the physical CDs in years). The deal is that when I started ripping the CDs, the program I was using would insert a 2 second delay between songs. I would like to know if there is a program/command that I can use to remove this delay between songs. Some of them have 0 delay, so songs that fade into each other sound correct. Other albums have songs that are supposed to seamlessly fade into each other, but they don't because of this delay. Is there any way to remove that delay between songs or do I have to re-rip the CD? Figuring out which albums have that problem and re-ripping the CD is going to take a very, very long time.

I am using my media server as my podcast collector. I am in the process of learning the ins and outs of NFS so i can mount a NFS directory and transfer my podcasts from server to player. For now i am using scp to transfer podcasts from server to desktop then to player. The problem is the path to the directory of one of the podcasts is /home/user/gpodder-downloads/The BILL&TIMMY Show Podcast.
whenever i try and run my scp command it fails because it thinks that TIMMY is a script i want to run in the background. I have tried to back-slash escape the character, i've tried single quoting and double quoting the character and i still get the same problem. as it sits now i have to move all podcasts to another directory and then transfer them to my desktop...but i would like to transfer the podcasts without un-necessary steps.
