I'm going to boot up a desktop (that has a cd burner) from a USB stick of openSUSE 11.3. Will I be able to burn an iso (that's on the desktop's harddrive) to CD, i.e. can I use the cd burner, if I've booted from a USB stick?

Navigating the OS menus is fast and programs are generally fast once they're running, but they're extremely slow when first opened (basic programs like Firefox, OpenOffice Writer, etc.). Is this because I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB stick? I don't know if I'd make the full switch if programs typically open this slow, but otherwise I love Ubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to get a running Squeeze onto a bootable USB-stick to test it, to make desirable adaptions and adoptions and only when I feel, that everything is okay, install that over my existing Deb-installation.
The DVD however offers only an "install" over an existing Linux-system, destroying that. Really hours and hours of Google aso. brought no solution to a - in my opinion - simple task.
I want to transfer the content of the DVD onto the USB-stick, make that stick bootable and THEN enable me to act like the system on the stick were my real OS, including of course making changes to the configurations. Only when I'm satisfied with the result, I then want to overwrite my existing system.
I have a 16gb flash drive with system rescue cd installed, I boot to it and run partimage. I'm trying to image an NTFS HDD. I would like to save it to the empty space on the flash drive but I'm unable to locate it in the file manager.
It's not under /dev/sdb1 or /livemnt/boot. The entire flash drive has been partitioned to be used by sysrescueCD.
I'm booting my server from a USB stick. It's working fine, but the root of my file system when booted only has about 100MB left. The USB stick itself has a little over 1GB free. How can I make / take up more space on the stick?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using Mepis on a dual boot computer for over a year. I want to give ubuntu a try so I made a bootable usb stick from ubuntu's live cd. Everything works as advertised even saved files and changes. I can't connect to the internet. I am connected via a 2wire modem to a linksys router thats connected to my computer through a ethernet cable. the router is for connecting my son's computer. Anyway I have no problems connecting from windows or Mepis. Whats strange is I can even connect when booting directly off the Ubuntu live CD.
When I try connect when booting from my usb stick I get a can not connect error. I am using the auto eth0 function and everything appears fine. I compared my settings from when booted from the Ubuntu live CD and they are Identical. I used network tools and I can ping my IP address but when trying to ping a web address I get the can not connect error. I am beginning to think ubuntu has my USB stick confused with a CD but not sure how to correct it. Here's some additional INFO:

For two days I've tried to get my new Belkin 7050 wifi stick up and running. No matter what I did nothing changed, at all. After close to 8hrs of straight trouble shooting I have made zero progress. Zero.
If you have a bunch of free time and want a project then feel free to play with this device. However if you're short on time or have work to get done just take it back to the store and get a different device.
Here's the over view of my situation :
- Ubuntu 8.04 : Device is detected. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP. Router can see device. Router has no security / password enabled.After several hours of trouble shooting Ubuntu I booted into win2k (supported by device)
- Win2k : Device is detected, official software installed. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP.
It does the exact same thing in Win2k as it does in Ubuntu. - Ubuntu 9.10 : Did a fresh install if 9.10 just to trouble shoot this problem. Symptoms are exactly the same. DHCP doesn't get an ip. There are no errors in /var/log/messages
- Ubuntu 9.10 : Blacklisted the regular drivers and did the ndiswrapper method, smooth sailing. After all is said and done it does the exact same thing. DHCP doesn't get an ip.
In all the trouble shooting I did (iwconfig, ifconfig, etc) I never received any error messages telling me that something had went wrong (besides the part where dhcp didnt get an ip).

I have tried geting the Vodofone dongle to work on Ubuntu 9.10 with some difficulty, followed several web suggestions, the software appears unstable.
This is for Australia.
Is there a good set of instructions to follow that work okay.
Dose Ubuntu 10.10 work better for this.

I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?
I installed a program with Yast (Kmess), but when I try to run it, bash gives me back this message:

i was writing a .img file to my usb stick with ImageWriter, but it didn't seem to do anything so i clicked the close gtk button and pulled the stick out of my pc. now my pc gives my an when i try to open the stick. is there any way to fix this. I'm about to ditch Freenas as my NAS software and make it an Ubuntu server box. The mainboard is an Asus AT3ION-T dual core Atom board. Freenas runs happily from USB stick. I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run a script called install.sh as follows: I get a jar file, and extract it using the command: unzip filename.jar -D path/to/files then I navigate to that directory where I extracted the files, and run the command: sh install.sh (where install.sh is one of the files that has been extracted in that directory using the above unzip command.) running this command gives me an error:'nstall.sh: command not found.' among other errors in the script ( from that portion of the script that should not even be executed, which is really weird). However, instead of unzipping the jar file, if I just copied the same install.sh file to that folder, and ran the 'sh install.sh' command, the script runs fine.

how do I blow those others away? I want them erased aand don't want them in grub or "installed around", rather, I want it "installed over" them. Also, the "Linux Other" is the USB stick. Is it a problem to have that?

Now i see that i can't unmount (Safely remove device) any USB Memory Stick. If i try to unmount it in KDE, i always get error about one or more files are in use.
But if i execute "umount" in terminal, then it unmount without any problem.

i want to install opensuse 11.3 with LXDE on ASUS EEEPC 1201HA.
Therefor i download this: Derivatives - openSUSE and tied to get this on USB-Stick with Unetbootin.
The EEEPC bootet but obviously the image was not able to boot.
Booting the ISO from CDROM from a external drive it works.
Is it not designed to boot from USB?
I have read lots about KDE (4.xx) freeze on OpenSuse 11.3 Live. Well I have experienced it first hand.
My hard disk which had Opensuse 11.3 (reiserfs) crashed. It was a dual boot and a windows upgrade wiped out the partition information. I am still trying to resuce with dd-rescue.
Now in the meanwhile I burnt a opensuse 11.3 Live CD and worked on it for a week. I was bit annoyed that every too often the cd drive spins....so I decided to burn a usb stick. Its a 2 gb USB stick. I followed the instructions to the toto to burn the ISO image. Then my nightmares started
The USB STICK boot was smooth. However when the desktop starts ...the trouble begins. I clicked on firefox...after about 10 seconds I experienced the dreaded freeze first. I had to reboot the system.
Everything was fine till i started Firefox, the system froze. Now reboot -> start -> firefox --> freeze cycle continued. I got fed up.
I then downloaded google-chrome. Installed it (after updating a couple of drivers) . It worked flawless. I loaded it with graphics...still no problem. Then started firefox .. the system froze. I even disabled all KDE windows animation, set only one window pane, still there is a freeze.
I took my USB stick off and rebooted the system though live CD. I started firefox on boot, NO problems. Opened many many tabs. Still no problem.
So there is a SURE problem with USB + Firefox. I SUSPECT IT MORE DUE TO NETWORK ISSUES THAN GUI (DRIVER) ISSUE. If it were to be GUI driver issue firefox should have fozen both with CD and USB.
Mine is pentium duo processor machine with 2gb RAM (DDR2). Intel chipset for video. I checked the MD5 of downloaded ISO its matched the one on the site. So the iso image is flawless.
All the threads in this regard suspect the video drivers, but I ALSO suspect the network. May be there is a wait() state in the network driver that is holding the process for way too long causing the freeze. Somebody needs to check this up.
The freeze is on USB stick boot only and not on CD boot.
I'm currently having troubles upgrading my 11.1 system. My SuSE running 11.3 had crashed, and when I tried to reinstall it I couldn't find the cd. I only have a 11.1 distro cd, in which I had installed. I want to upgrade to 11.2 since that should be the easiest, from then I think i can figure out how to upgrade from 11.4. I currently do not have any cd's or a usb flash drive to mount the iso image onto. I've read through the wiki looking for a solution, but even with updating my repos i still haven't found the answer.

I've just installed clean copies of both VirtualBox v4.0.8 and Fedora 15. Now I have followed the instructions here : [url] to install the latest VBox guest additions.
Each time I try I get the following message:
The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. The missing package can be installed with
yum install kernel-devel-2.6.38.8-32.fc15.i686.PAE.
However, if I run that command I am told there is no such package available. The guest addition installer continues seemingly OK, but after a restart they are not loaded.
I've just moved to Fedora from Ubuntu due to major issues with its new version.
