OpenSUSE :: HDD Temperature Control?

Mar 29, 2010

There is a question, i'd like to ask: is there any decent program to monitor HDD temperature for linux? WHy are they so few? Suse Install repositories do not show any that could be installed. I used to use hddtemp on my previous 11.2 gnome installation, but it seems now something gone wrong, and i cant get this program anymore through: "sudo apt-get install hddtemp" and receive "sudo: apt-get: command not found", so as i am a newbie i can barely guess what is wrong. maybe there are any other programs to get this thing running. Its really puzzling because every laptop user need such tool badly, and i do not understand why is there so many monitor tools for cpu temperature and not a single good for hard drive which is far more important than cpu temperature, that rises and drops constantly as soon as your fans are fine???

OpenSUSE Hardware :: App To Show The Temperature (probably Of The Cpu)?

Nov 28, 2010

I'm using default KDE openSUSE 11.3 64 bit In windows I can see the temperature of my HP laptop (cpu I suppose). Is there a facility for viewing that in Linux / openSUSE. Maybe in KDE, maybe in Yast, wherever?

The reason is that my laptop's temperature and fan speed increases slowly when I convert large video files from one format to another and the computer eventually shuts down spontaneously when the temperature becomes critical. I'd like to watch this so I can prevent it. So I need the app.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Energy-Control Out Of Control?

Since a while, the energy-saver shuts down the screeago,it happens after half an hour, but I didnt set it up in that orders !It makes menervous, short time away from the comp, and soon the screen is dark! And the screensaver will not appear any more, too.I tried to enlarge the times in the energy-manager,created a new profile, switched off the laptopmode-service,nothing helps! And it seems,if there is no possibility to set one of the profiles up,they can only be changed, deleted or newly created. Is there really no place to force it to the required settings?Under the good old KDE3.5,it was no problem,to get it work like I want it to.My 64-bit system runs under openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.Is here any salvation for my nerves

OpenSUSE :: Getting A Fan Speed/temperature Monitoring Program For 11.4?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a dual boot with xp and opensuse 11.4. There has been an annoying 'system fan has failed' error message that was dealt with by replacing a fan and installing speedfan and hardware monitor on the windows partition, but my opensuse installation has no such programs running, and I want to keep things cool while I'm running opensuse. Speedfan is a program that tells the fans to turn on and off. Usually according to the temperature that the sensors are reading. The program shows temperatures and fan speeds and allows you to have control. Is there a fan speed/temperature monitoring program for opensuse?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sensors-AMD CPU Temperature Monitoring

Dec 4, 2010

I have just recently installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer. I have switched from Ubuntu and have been trying to get things configured similar to what it was. One problem I have encountered is with installing sensors and k10temp, the module needed to monitor my CPU temp. within Linux. I have an AMD sempron and a biostar mcp6p m2+ motherboard. I have installed package "sensors" and have run the sensors-detect and it went through and found k10temp that I would need to load within the kernel for this to work properly. I had this working in Ubuntu, but not sure how to do it in openSuse. I have tried compiling the k10temp source, running modprobe k10temp and received no output, and looked around the conf files, but not sure how to go about doing it?

Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.

I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Feb 8, 2011

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

OpenSUSE :: Add More Control Functionality Through Mouse

Mar 14, 2010

I used easystroke on ubuntu, and it worked well enough to be functional. I triend opening Xstroke in suse, but it just adds an icon down by the notification panel. right click and left click seem to turn it on and off, but i've yet to find any configuration menu of any kind. I've also found the 'input actions' section of the personal settings menu, but i'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. Basically, what I need is pretty simple. I have a single application that I would like to add more control functionality through the mouse. I don't even necessarily need gesture control, in fact if i could just make my extra mouse buttons perform specific keyboard commands (F11, ctrl++, etc.) that would be fantastic. If I could set it to do different things on different programs.

OpenSUSE :: Volume Control With 11.3 KDE Desktop?

Jul 20, 2010

I did a clean DVD install of 11.3 instead of the upgrade. I'm using a 64 bit Panasonic CF-52 Toughbook with a 250 Gig removable drive. I have noticed on 11.3 that the on-screen volume control applet is gone! It was right next to the battery and the WiFi indicators on 11.2 but it is gone with 11.3.

Now what ever you listen to is FULL BLAST! It makes you go back to the desktop and use the hardware adjusters on the laptop. Even the usual keyboard key combos are not responding. It can be embarrassing especially in quiet, public settings.

OpenSUSE :: Severe GUI Mouse Control - KDE 4.5.x, 11.3?

Oct 5, 2010

My mouse and trackpad button control is severely impaired in 11.3, KDE 4.5.1 (or .2) using Compiz. Gnome works fine. XFCE has some problems. The mouse control of window features is sometimes limited to one window with the rest of the desktop not responding to mouse actions. Popping up a second window from an app causes the mouse control to be completely lost. The issue leaves KDE effectively broken having only keyboard control. With some ESC key hits and using right mouse button to close one app (from the panel), I can move focus to another app but mouse control within the app is non-existent. Moving windows or raising or lowering doesn't work either. Sometimes, the GUI captures the mouse click but does not recognize the active App and applies it to objects sitting on the desktop screen underneath.

I've reverted partially back to the 11.3 installation DVD then reload updates and then moved to stable release of 4.5, then went back to the 4.5 factory. All failed to correct the problem. I removed .kde/.kde4 files and this did not help. What is wrong with my system? Also installed the latest kernel of the repos then reverted back to 2.6.34.7-0.3 [x64]. [very frustrating, been using Suse/KDE for >7 yrs, this one has me stumped]

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.
