KDE 4 in openSUSE 11.2 has the annoying feature of listing user names on the splash screen. I found out where to get rid f this for 11.1 but I seem not to able to fnd out where did it.
Attempting to set up a Samba network from my SuSE 11.2 desktop to a windows laptop. Using YaST, a Samba server has been created, and allow users to share has been clicked. Identity is not a domain controller. no trusted domains have been set, and no LDAP settings have been set.
Right now, each computer can see the other over the network. When clicking on the network from windows, a window pops up requesting a user and password.
Konqueror sees both computers under smb://. It also has a window that pops up requesting user name and password. Where do I set up these user names and pass words?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. When I get to the login screen, I am given a choice of the usernames available on the computer.
What I want is a simple username field to fill in, so other users of this computer won't know what user name accounts on the machine. Unfortunately, the only other option I can see is for automatic login - the last thing I want!
In the past, when I logged into Ubuntu the username foield was left blank. How can I achieve the same in 10.04?
Picture the following:On computer A, local user John (and John alone) has rwx access to file1.txtComputer B also has a local user account named John. If file1.txt was to be copied from computer A to computer B, would the user account John on computer B be able to access it?I guess this wouldn't work using two windows computers due to the User name / GUID relationship. Maybe linux has something similar?
I'm Running Lubuntu 10.04 on an old P3 PC Every time i want to log in i have to type the user-name and password. Is there any way Lubuntu can show the user-name to the login screen so that when i reach the login screen i see the usernames an i just click on the user-name enter the password and login ? s that achievable in Lubuntu 10.04 ?
Im trying to compare two files and I only want to display the user names that are in the first file and not the second.
So I have one file named final.txt (which contains every user name and only the user names in a list no other information)
Then I have another file Over1.txt (which only contains certain users that have different permissions This file is also setup differently with the user name and some information about the user after the user name.
I need a way to compare final.txt to over1.txt so that I will only display the names that are in final.txt but not Over1.txt
Ive tried using diff and comm but just cant seem to get it two work correctly. Im not sure if im missing a option or what.
I have an ubuntu server set up in which i would like my shared media directory to be accessable with multiple usernames / passwords because I use my admisistrator username and password for samba as well, but I do not want to give out that password to all clients in my house. And, I would like to have write permissions but keep other users to read only. Is this possible or do i need to just make one separate username / password for samba sharing?
Since upgrading to KDE 4.6.3 (from 4.6.2), I found the desktop names hadreverted to "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc. I renamed them in "PagerSettings" but when I next logged on, I found they had reverted. I'verepeated it with a new .kde4 folder but that made no difference.raham Davis, Bracknell, Berks. I am bad with bash programming and I need some help how I can make variable names out of a string.I will need some help start doing that. And I think the first would be to get part of the filenames strings into variables.
i m running suse 11.2 on a generic desktop machine with two external usb hard disks for data storage. when i restart, the names of the names of the usb disks get changed in /media from exampledisk to exampledisk-1, another boot up and i get exampledisk-2. the data is no longer in exampledisk, but in exampledisk-1 or exampledisk-2.
I want to use old devices names eth0, eth1 etc. instead of default OpenSuSE (11.1)eth_s0_0 etc. There is no firewall, no devices management via NetworkManager, static IP address.
1) to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and insert eth0ð1 instead of eth_s0_0 & eth_s0_1
2) To rename /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg_eth_s0_0 ( and s0_1) to ifcfg_eth0 and ifcfg_eth1 and then reboot ?
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 (Linux piura 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-03-16 21:25:39 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and have a network problem. At work, ethernet works fine. When I plug it into my DSL router at home (which works with other computers), I encounter the following behavior: ping can resolve host names, however, traceroute and Firefox and Thunderbird cannot. It happens for both wired and wireless connections.
I have a samba share that was previously hosted by and accessed by Windows operating systems. As a result the filenames of all the files are not very command-line/linux friendly. I need to get a script or app that can go through the samba share recursively and change all file names to lowercase and replace spaces in the names with a ".", "_" or something.
here are the steps that i have taken already to resolve and troubleshoot the issue. i can ping Google. i can browse the Internet i can browser the repo Index of / through my browser. i have insured that ipv6 is disabled through network configuration through yast.
I am new to Linux. When I installed some applications and something through package manager,Now I get two added options in boot loader with identical names like failsafe and normal. what is that?multiple kernel?
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.
Take a physical user FRED. FRED is a linux user ( known by linux on his laptop ) FRED is a Samba user ( Known by samba on the samba pdc server ) When he logs locally (with username/password) on its standalone laptop (with no network), he is known as FRED:user. He access his data in /home/FRED/. When he logs through samba (with username/password) on the domain MY_DOM, he is known as MY_DOMFRED:MY_DOMdomain user. He access his data in /home/MY_DOM/FRED/. ) Is it possible that the human FRED has only one repository and have full access to its repository regardless of how it was connected. If yes, how to do it
2) If not, Is it possible that the human FRED has full access to /home/FRED/.............. and /home/MY_DOM/FRED/.
what is the correct way/procedure to re-create a user home directory. For instance, on a Mac/Windows machine, i would just rename the existing user profile [home dir], and then just log back in as the user - job done. On OpenSuse/Linux, it seems it does not work that way..?! When i try to rename my home folder to say me.old via root, and log back in as me, i get all kinds of errors. Opensuse does create a new home dir, but it appears not properly.
Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?
This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.
In short: browsing the internet with domain names does not work. The long version: I've configured my network with DHCP and ifup. Ping works on my internal net and with servers in the internet. Dig work's too! I get the right IP to the requested domain. When i try to access the internet using firefox or even wget i get an DNS error. For example wget is showing the following error: Resolving heise.de... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address 'heise.de'
Again dig show me the right IP and if i add the entry to /etc/hosts it work's too! I've even tried it with manually setup of ip address, nameserver and default gateway but with the same result. Switching off the firewall has no effect on this problem, too.
I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!
This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.
Q: How can I allow my users to mount a cifs share without an entry in fstab in OpenSuse 11.4?
I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:
1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit): "http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/" 2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin 3. Make them setuid root:
Code: linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/mount.cifs linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/umount.cifs 4. Mount your cifs shares as a normal user:
I cannot login to kde with my username, even in failsafe mode. When I'm trying to do it I get a blank screen for a sec and fallback to kdm. I can start kde as mythtv user, and I can also start plasma-desktop manually from gnome3. I tried to remove .kde4 folder but nothing changed.
I installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.
I tried Word Processor, found that I can't key in any word & punctuation, and when I paste some words on it, it show, but if I add any word or punctuation, it doesn't show. Another problem is,I can't choose the format to save the thing. Is Libre Office really ready for end user?
Akonadi can't run when log as user root due to mysql protection :
Code: [akonadiserver] Found mysql_install_db: "/usr/bin/mysql_install_db" [akonadiserver] Found mysqlcheck: "/usr/bin/mysqlcheck" [akonadiserver] Database process exited unexpectedly during initial connection! [akonadiserver] executable: "/usr/sbin/mysqld"

So how to configure Kmail to read and delete local mail sent by other users or by system or apps ?
vmware-user has crashed. I have this bug when I try to cut and paste with Libre writer in 11.3 and just do not know what action to take. it also comes up when I boot up.
