I'm running OpenSUSE 11.1 and just upgraded from KDE 4.1 to KDE 4.3. Unfortunately YaST -- which worked fine before -- fails to cooperate and whenever I try to change anything, e.g. my keyboard settings,gives me the error message "At least one display must be active". Well, what does that mean? Of course, I have an active display and I also included the repositories for the NVIDIA graphics card

I think I've totally destroyed my Suse install, but I have no idea what happened.
I was running Yast's "Create a backup" utility and my screen totally went black and kicked me to the login screen. I was unable to log in, except to a terminal.
So, then I tried to restart X (by typing startx) and I get "Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0"
I've tried running the repair utility, and it doesn't work. Through a number of commands, I was able to start up a second X session, but that wasn't really much help.
I have got xorg and gnome-core installed. When I put in command startx I get the following message: X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0 Fatal server error:Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running,remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. when I try to sudo Xorg -configure it shows me same message server is ..... lspci shows me the following information 04:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)So what I am doing wrong and how do I get this videocard working with Xorg.

1. Some one told me to change the xorg.conf file but i failed because there is no such file in the given location
2. Some one told me to create it using system-config-display but for fedora 14 there is no package for that

that's my first linux server. on my root is CentOS already installed. when i connect via "Remote Desktop Viewer" i log in with my accout.
then i see the textmode and type in "startx" and "init 5" but nothing happens but i can see this:

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.
I've just upgraded (finally) to 10.04 desktop, and when I boot, I get a login screen, which is quite usual, but once I log in, the machine drops to terminal, instead of the usual GUI. I've tried running startx, but I get this error message. Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:

I have a computer whose display I want active all the time, but that I don't want people coming up to and doing anything on. At the same time, I want the keyboard and mouse to remain connected because even though they will seldom be needed, when they are needed it's important that they be available quickly.I guess I'm looking for a screensaver that doesn't save the screen. Something that prevents the mouse and keyboard from doing anything unless a PAM authentication is entered, just like a screensaver would
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I have a question regarding the configuration of Network Connection. My wired connection is fine right now and when I check the network connection applet, it display active information of eth0. However, when I click the Configure button, the Network Connection window appears but there's nothing in the Wired panel. Should there be a eth0 in that panel? I remember I had one before, but after I messed with some configuration of VPN, my network became unstable and I remove the Network Manager to try to solve the problem. Since then, there's nothing in my Network Connection window, though I can still connect to my router with eth0. Now even after I reinstalled the Network Manager, I still don't get anything.

For some reason I get an empty field for the command echo $DISPLAY. and as a result an xclock command results in error: can't open display. I tried to set it to localhost:10.0 and I get: Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0

I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.

I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.

I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.
Has anyone had success in getting likewise open or another tool to allow domain users to log in with wireless networking? I have an issue where GDM comes up, users attempts to log in and gets authentication error. After a few minutes it works. Centrify has the same issue.
I've tried removing network-manager and using /etc/network/interfaces to set up networking, which helps, but there's a 1-3 minute delay before a user may log in for the first time after a reboot. My theory is gdm gets loaded before networking is up. There's got to be a work around for this. Even having gdm just hanging for a minute while it waits for networking would be acceptable.

I used my live CD and run as live session to check on the hard drive, When I issued the command fdisk -l on an terminal , the out put indicated that only /dev/sda1 is bootable, and other /dev/sda* were not bootable ...

I like openSUSE 11.3 very much. When I move the mouse pointer to the upper left corner of the screen, my active window is immediately replaced by 4, smaller windows (I think that at the beginning I had a cube). I'm afraid this gobbles up a lot of memory and henceforth slows down my computer. Is it possible to have only one window "active" at the time? If I want, say a terminal screen, I can always activate it via the "Computer" button?

I configured it using the Window Domain Membership YaST2 module and I can login successfully (although unreliably). The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?

got a suspend problem with OpenSuse 11.3. I configured the powersave module that whenever I close down the screen of my laptop it suspends to ram. Works fine so far except when the screensaver is active. It just stays on when I close down the lid.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi have just installed opensuse 11.3 on my PC and updated all packages and all and then i installed nvidia drivers from this link SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE i downloaded the 1 click install file nvidia.ymp and installed the driver successfullybut then when i rebooted the PC for the driver to work,it doesn't work,and when i go to system>look and feel>desktop effects and i try to enable the effects i get the message that i cant enable the effects it gives me this message "Desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?" PS i say "no" to this message and it closes but i notice there is a constant use of 33% of the CPU and theres an unnamed/unknown process in the system monitor that keeps appearing and disappearing...thats quitrd because i installed opensuse 11.2 and 11.3 before and i never had these problems
