I have got xorg and gnome-core installed. When I put in command startx I get the following message: X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0 Fatal server error:Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. when I try to sudo Xorg -configure it shows me same message server is ..... lspci shows me the following information 04:02.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)So what I am doing wrong and how do I get this videocard working with Xorg.
I have VIA/S3G unichrome IGP video card of 32MB after installing fedora i am getting very worst resolution of 600x400which is completely irritating so please provide me a way out from this problem to use fedorathe solutions i followed and failed are given below
1. Some one told me to change the xorg.conf file but i failed because there is no such file in the given location
2. Some one told me to create it using system-config-display but for fedora 14 there is no package for that
3. some one told me again of using the command Xorg -configure but it said as followed [root@localhost tmp]# Xorg -configure
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
I've just upgraded (finally) to 10.04 desktop, and when I boot, I get a login screen, which is quite usual, but once I log in, the machine drops to terminal, instead of the usual GUI. I've tried running startx, but I get this error message. Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
Sometimes during bootup I get the following error:Starting Dovecot Imap: Fatal: listen(995) failed: Address already in useI tried to figure out what I could with the command lsof -i :995 and this was my output:COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAMErpc.mount 2936 root 7u IPv4 9201 TCP *:pop3s (LISTEN)When the system boots without the dovecot error the output of losof -i :995 is as follows:

When I am trying to run the Xserver using the command startx I am getting the below mentioned error
xauth: creating new authority file /oracle/oracle10g/.serverauth.22555 Fatal server error:PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server. Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
I am having a strange problem with the Opensuse 11.2 Xorg server. Graphics hardware is Nvidia Quadro FX-5000, driver is ver 190.53. 90% of the time, I am getting a seg violation from the Xserver on trying to login via kdm:
[Code]...
...is the error that is present in the "kdm.log" file. So far, it doesn't seem to be user dependent (happens either as root or joe random user,) Again, so far, it only seems to happen with "driver nvidia" enabled in the config file, not with "driver nv" The failure occurs shortly after hitting return on the login screen. After it fails, it starts up a new Xserver, and presents a new login screen. Repeated attempts seem to *eventually* succeed, but 90% of the time, it fails I strongly suspect the Nvidia driver, but I have not been able to find anything documenting any similar problems.
I think I've totally destroyed my Suse install, but I have no idea what happened.
I was running Yast's "Create a backup" utility and my screen totally went black and kicked me to the login screen. I was unable to log in, except to a terminal.
So, then I tried to restart X (by typing startx) and I get "Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0"
I've tried running the repair utility, and it doesn't work. Through a number of commands, I was able to start up a second X session, but that wasn't really much help.
This box is running 10.04 server, it's been running perfectly for almost 6 weeks. It's only function in life is running MailArchiva which is an ediscovery package, runs very well. Anyhow, yesterday the boss tells me he wants to do something else so the last thing I did was an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade, no errors were observed, I seem to remember like 8 updates were available, this is what I've normally done in the past to keep it current. The last thing I did after that was shutdown -r now.
This morning I can't get into the box, I reconnected a monitor to it and this is the error I'm getting when it stops after about 9 lines into the boot process; modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-server/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha.ko): No such device. This is a mystery to me, the system is not encrypted. The only stuff that is belongs to MailArchiva. Anyhow someone evidently made off with my install cd so I am downloading another to see if I can repair this but I have no idea what broke.
Ubuntu 10.10 Whenever I try to boot up now I get a command line environment instead of the normal gnome desktop. The first error message that comes up is: "Screens found, but none have a usable configuration" further down: "Fatal server error: no screens found" Any way I can re-configure so it detects my monitor?
I'm using with success NX server and client on Ubuntu 11.04 on both side. Yesterday the server crashed and now the client can't connect to it. The client works well because if I try to connect to an other server it works well and if I try to connect to this server with an other user it works well. So I think that there is a problem with my user. I have tried to solve the problem as explained in the details of the error. Unfortunately there is no file /var/log/messages so I can't search the code of the exception.

I had created a database in mysql called guestbook and created tables also in mysql and also granted remote connections privileges from below command
mysql> grant all privileges on *.* to root@192.168.1.222 identified by "rrcrrc";
i had accessed from my pc(192.168.1.222) and used phprunner to create php web pages and copied the phprunner output folder to use with apache. when i accessed from my pc the below error is coming
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /home/administrator/useridall/include/dbconnection.php on line 9
i can't understand what is going on so i put this question in the forum, below is i am giving the dbconnection.php details.
I've installed 9.10 on a work station with success. I've got an nvidia quadro fx 3000 and its supported under nvidia legacy driver apparently. So I've tried to install the driver with no success. Xorg.0.log reports a fatal server error no screens found. I get a flashing console login when I boot with "nvidia" device driver in xorg.conf, it boots fine with "nv". No matter what I try I cant get it to boot with nvidia drivers. Also, on a side note, after initially installing nvidia driver thru hardware in gnome, I no longer have a grub loader option to select recovery or anything else. Upon boot it displays "grub" briefly then continues to boot to gui. I've set the delay to 20 seconds with no results.
Resolved the issue of the display, now on to the grub menu.
I have server 10.04 running, and I modified my fstab file to automatically mount an NTFS partition on startup, but after a reboot, I see that I clearly did something wrong, as now it will not boot. The output is:
[Code]....
init: ureadahead-other main process (923) terminated with status 4 If this is an error with my changes to the fstab file, is there any way I can access is to change it? No matter what i do I can't get it to boot.
there are several posts related to my problem but not quite what I want. I don't need any effects to be running nor do I need perfect resolution. I have a PCI-E card Nvidia 8600 gts and I need to run redhat 7.1 for reasons that are not debatable. I also have an onboard ati radeon X 1250 but currently I am running the PCI-E.The installation was successful and ran in GUI, however after installation and reboot, the screen keeps flickering trying to load the desktop.I just need to get the GUI running the same way the installer was able to run in GUI, I tried editing the XF86Config file to change the driver to either vesa or vga but still didn't work. Probing for devices is not an option since the card is not listed and the maximum video ram goes up to 64MB in xconfigurator. It probes my card as a VGA generic with 1 MB ram. I know there is a way to have the desktop load just the same as the installer's gui settings but that's where I need help.
this is after changing all the 'driver' values to vesa. I don't understand why it can't find the screen even though I used the horizontal and vert. sync values for my monitor. Any instructions or advice on how to just get the desktop loaded would be great, I know this is a very old OS but regardless I need for it to work.
I have just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.4. When I boot up, I get a command line, but when I do 'startx', I get 'Fatal server error: no screens found'. I have been looking for a solution and tried 'Xorg -configure' but this gives:
Code: Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vboxvideo_drv.so: undefined symbol: resVgaShared
My issue began with my resolution changing to 800x600 in Karmic Koala and then my inability to change it back to anything else. In my haste to fix it before going to work this morning I loaded a new xorg.conf without backing up the old xorg.conf with data not relevant for my monitor and now I'm in limbo. The good news, I hope, is that I also run 8.04 on the same computer so I do have access to what I hope is proper xorg.conf / I've modified the existing xorg.conf file and I'm still getting the "low graphics mode" message (EE) problem parsing the config file and (EE) Error parsing the config file. Fatal Server Error: no screens found.
I have 3 accounts setup on this machine. One is root, one is my own, and one is for my kids. My account and root work fine, but today when I tried to log my kids on, startx fails (it also fails from runlevel4). I have tried creating new accounts and they fail as well. I'm not sure when the issue started, but it's been less than a week I believe. The consistent error which I receive is Quote:
I would prefer to use a linux server for authentication but I will need the same configuration features.I have been looking for a good guide to setting up CentOS as an alternative to Active Directory, but have not found one yet.The features I want to see.
1. works with Windows clients. 2. Network Home folders (does not neessisarly need to hold profile information) 3. Logon scripts for clients. 4. shared printers 5. shared folders. 6. can log linux boxes in with the same credentials and logon scripts.
okay so we have multiple servers running CentOS and multiple people who need access to these machines for various tasks. i would like to be able to use the credentials from Active Directory (running on server 2008) to give them access to these servers without having to go through each server and add these people into permission groups. basically a single sign-on for all of these servers depending upon what permissions were granted in Active Directory. how do i go about doing this?
I just installed Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 in my VMWare, but I do not know how to start X Windows. I have tried to type "startx" on "RUN", but I get error message: Fatal Server error Server already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
I was working to integrate Centos 5 and AD 2003 R2, this is my set up Windows side:
1. Install Identity Management for Unix, (Windows R2 already includes the Unix attribute not entirely necessary to install IMU, but it makes easier to configure the attributes from ADUC, when IMU is installed the Unix attributes TAB is shown in the user properties)
2. Configure the Unix attributes for every user account that will be authenticating from centos.
3. Create an user account to be used as a proxy for ldap, a regular user would be enough. Password never expires.
4. Create a computer account for every centos host; assign this computer account as pre-windows 2000 account.
5. Assign a value of 4128 to the user account control property for the computer account.
I had an earlier thread with wrong title and wasn't sure of the problem at the time. Now I have some details after checking all the threads about catalyst so posting a new thread. The problem: In korganizer (or To-Do list in kontact), whenever double-clicking or right-click->Edit.. a To-Do item in the summary list window, it crashes Xorg.
[Code]...
Fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting I think it has something to do with the amd/ati catalyst driver and korganizer. My video card is XFX Radeon HD5670. I have Fedora 14 x86_64 latest update with xorg 1.9.1-3. I tried catalyst 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, and kernel 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64. Same problem.
If I use vesa driver, or from another PC with proprietary nvidia driver, no problem. Open source radeon driver works ok but sometimes the display turns off and I can't get back the display. And I need 3D. I scoured through the forum and followed the instructions exactly:
after I installed graphical ATI drivers for my Ubuntu distribution version 10.10 running on a Acer laptop, it told me to restart and since then I cannot boot GNOME. Whenever I start the laptop, I just get a command prompt with username and password. I can browse through my files using changedir and other commands. After logging in I typed 'startx' and it gave me alot of errors:
Quote:
Fatal server error: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0 (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI : 0@0 : 20 : 4) found (EE) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI : 0@0 : 20 : 4) found (EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
[code]....
So I really regret downloading these drivers, is there any way to roll back to the old Ubuntu supported video drivers?
I have this old box that I used at school that I wanted to re-purpose and use. So i decided to that I wanted to run xp, ubuntu studio and slackware so I can learn about linux and do some other things with xp. I think I got through the installatiosa all fine and dandy, and I installed grub for my boot loader, I can boot into studio and xp, but I cant get into slackware. the grub boot menu is sorta funky too, it shows a generic and recovery mode for studio which is fine, and then another option for xp, some memory test boot option, but then for slackware it shows "Slackware Linux (Slackware 13.1.0) (on /dev/sda4) four times in a row. If I select any of them they all end up with some error; the third SW [slackware] option down the list of the repeated 4 allows me to sign into root, but when I type "startx" i get :
(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error: no screens found
but thats with a lot of other text above that. if you need any more details, please dont hesitate to request for them. I'm going to take some time and cool down. I'm trying to get these three OSes running from one HD. I've partitioned the 80 gig drive as follows
Primary 40 G NTSF for XP Primary 2G Linux Swap Primary 16G Slackware Primary 18 U Studio Primary
Is there any way to make a disk image of an active partition? I have to get a complete backup (partitions, MBR, all data files) of my server without bringing it down to do it. I want to have a backup that, in the event of a system failure of any sort, I can quickly restore onto a new, bare hard disk and have the system back up and running. The windows equivalent of this would be something like Drive Image XML, this is the functionality I am looking for.
I've added httpd to runlevels 2-5 using chkconfig, and also double checked it using ntsysv, but it still won't run on startup, even though it works just fine when started manually (using "sudo service httpd start").The results of "chkconfig --list httpd" show it is on for levels 2-5, and I've confirmed the current runlevel to be 3. I've found no errors in the logs (neither Apache's nor the system's), but maybe I'm looking at them wrong...My machine is a VPS (on VMWare) running CentOS 5.5 32bit. For additional information, see the output of getinfo.sh: http://pastebin.centos.org/35570I would greatly appreciate help on this, as it is delaying our NGO from moving servers.
