Ubuntu :: Compiz Cube Rotation Slow In 10.04 With Firefox?
May 19, 2010
I have recently done a clean install of Lucid Lynx and set everything up the way I had it in Jaunty (skipped Karmic). However, I am now having problems with the Compiz Cube and Firefox 3.6.
Whenever I rotate my workspace that contains a Firefox window that is active, the animation is very jerky and slow. It is fine if Firefox is a background window. This was never a problem in Jaunty with Firefox 3.0.
Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how I might be able to fix it? I have tried disabling all addons in Firefox.
My PC: Core 2 Duo E7400, Geforce 7010 (onboard), 2GB RAM
UPDATE: starting Firefox in Safe Mode seems to help a little. Not sure why though...

How can I get the cube rotation on a laptop with a touchpad? I love it on my desktop at work, really gets a great "WOW!" when people see it in action.I have the CSSM and extras installed, but can't figure out the keybindings with the touchpad.....

I was just wondering about something. I have linked the middle click to initiate the cube rotation and it works perfectly except when I have the cursor on firefox. Then it just acts like I middleclicked in firefox itself. Personally I like this behaviour but was wondering why it is JUST firefox that has it. Would be great if I could achieve the same in Blender

I've recently enabled the fun stuff with compiz but I've run into a sort of problem... I want 9 desktops in a 3x3 grid (yeah, weird I know) but if I'm using the cube I can only rotate left and right... which is pretty weak sauce. Is there any way to (preferred) have desktops on the top and bottom of the cube and be able to bind a key combo to rotate up and down (ctrl-alt-up/down)? I *could* put 9 desktops in a row, but I really don't like that solution - it takes too many flips to make it from one desktop to another.
Compiz is all full of beautiful (especially burning the windows on close)

I use the hotkey ctrl+alt+left click in Blender to zoom object... So I didn't want Compiz to use the same key to move around the cube. I changed a setting in window move, and either the old or the new key works.
New is alt+1 but it does nothing, same with ctrl+alt+left click. Also, I want the move around hotkey to be something like super+m or ctrl+m etc.

I was just experimenting with compiz effects on Natty 11.04, and when I clicked desktop cube (which I'm assuming you're not supposed to do, haha), my compiz broke. The pop up windows are way at the top of the screen, almost out of view, and the windows lack the close, minimize, and maximize buttons. I tried reinstalling all the compiz plugins, and when I rebooted I had the same problem! I am using metacity right now, but I would be very sad if i was stuck with it.

I used OpenSUSE today and in one of the options for Rotate Cube (in compiz) was something that let me adjust to what angle I could allow the cube to go up and down. If I set it to 360 degrees, I was able to rotate the cube in any which direction I pleased. Can I do this on Ubuntu?

I have managed to get Compiz Desktop Cube working with 4 viewports. Everything is great but I have noticed the that cube will show the running applications in the bottom panel, from the previously active viewport, on all sides of the cube.
Anyone know how to set it so that the bottom panel on each side of the cube displays only the applications that are running in the currently visible viewport? I hope that's clear because I'm not 100% sure of the terminology.er to determine the viewport you are looking for.

Here's a strange compiz effect - odd visual echo when you rotate the cube. I kept my /home partition from the Lucid beta testing and compiz seems to have problems with it - looks like I will have to do a complete format and reinstall to solve this. I already purged and reinstalled compiz and anything I could find associated with it. Anyone else suffering from a buggy compiz? The strange thing is - this only occurs 1 out of 10 boots???

I have sixteen workspacess arranged in a 4x4 square. When the Compiz desktop cube is enabled, I can only switch between four of them on a row. All keys that would otherwise allow me to switch up and down between rows are disabled, even the ones I set outside of Compiz.
What is worst is that even the Window switchers are unable to change the current row I am on. If I use the Ring, Shift or Static switchers' "All Workspaces" modes, I can see the windows on all sixteen workspaces - but trying to switch to a window that is above or below the row I am currently on will only rotate around to the correct workspace's column, but not actually bring up the workspace the window is on. To navigate between all workspaces, I have to use the "Expose" feature.
Is there any way I can have a cube for horizontal navigation, but keep ordinary vertical navigation?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop and installed the AMD restricted drivers (Radeon HD 5770). I installed compizconfig-settings-manager and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra. All of the plugins have worked fine so far. However, while "Cube Reflection and Deformation" works, I cannot change the settings. Specifically, I tried changing the cube caps from the visually irritating logos to which it defaults to plain white, but the logos stayed. I also tried removing the annoying "Reflection" option, but to no avail.
I soon discovered that none of my settings would apply to the plugin, although they would display as though they were applied in the settings manager. Changing the settings in other plugins, like "Desktop Cube," works fine. So far, I am sticking just with the "Desktop Cube," "Rotate Cube," and "3D Windows" plugins, but I would really like that cylinder. And I have used Compiz, including the deformation plugin, for years with no difficulty.

I installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.
But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.
how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.

today i decided i wanted to use the desktop cube again, so i went through all the compiz settings and got it working in gnome classic. however, when i initiate ratation with the mouse (ctrl>alt>button 1) it is sloooow whenever there is a window open (even just one). rotating away from the workspace with a window does seem to speed up the framerate. when i had maverick 10.10 it was never this slow.

I am dual booting natty and linux mint debian edition. I have noticed in LMDE compiz is far, far, far, far smoother. In natty scrolling, resizing, and animations are all noticeably laggier. In LMDE I can use the normal resize with no problem, in natty its so laggy I need to use rectangle or stretch. Animations are also glitchy (fade animations have white flicker) In lmde there are no visual hiccups.
I am using the same driver and kernel in LMDE, the major difference is LMDE has a much older compiz (0.8.4, before the compiz++ rewrite I believe.) Does anyone know why the newer compiz in natty is so much slower? Does anyone else expereince this? my video card is an hd2600 using the cat 11.4 driver, but I experience these same issues with the oss driver.

Slightly concerned as 10.04 is still suffering from the slow window restore, same as 9.10. Are we going to be looking at running another patched xserver-no-backfill (xorg-server) package, which was well out of date on 9.10? [URL]

When Lucid released, I upgrade the Karmic in my Thinkpad R61 using
Code:
One things that remains until today is that when I'm using latest kernel (right now 2.6.32-24), the compiz run very slow, make the whole desktop unusable. When compiz is killed and using metacity, the desktop is running in normal speed.
Fortunately I still had the Karmic kernel (2.6.31-20) and booting using this kernel, everything run normally.
I just wonder what cause the latest kernel make compiz become slow. Is there any leftover application that I had to uninstall (maybe it's like pulseaudio's problem above), or any missing library/application that I need to install?
