Jul 15, 2011I have opensuse 11.4 with KDE. How to add a program launcher directly from the menu to the KDE desktop, but not as a widget?

View 3 Replies1st, I got the OS install. I just want to hide some program launcher from menu bar. In the old Gnome, it work this way, I put the mouse on the menu bar, and then right click, choose preference then I can hide everything I wanna hide. But I can not do that on F12 any more, I tired to refer to Gnome instruction manual on Gnome web site. It seems like they did not change anything on Gnome 2.28. Since the instruction remain the same.
2nd I also want to ask, how do I change the default interface language setting in F12? In previous version I just need to do that in SYSTEM-->Preference. But I can not see the option any more either.
3rd I can not install the NVIDIA proprietary driver even though I got GCC and kernel development header in place. The install log said:" The binary file is not for the kernel" Well, I just use the regular i686 kerenl as usual. It does not make sense it will not work.
I got the driver running by using the rpmfusion driver, not the one from Nvida
By the way, The nouveau driver in F12 works far from OK on my GO 7300. It just like a slave driver that whip the GPU at full out all the time, let alone it does not have 3D capability.
The live cd does not include GCC and kernel development header. That made me feel like walking on the moon but forgot to put the gravity suite on.
I'm new to openSUSE just installed a chess program using YaST2 software installer. The program is called phalanx. It doesn't show up in the application menu in KDE Desktop and I don't know how to start the program.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've a question about KDE desktop effects. How do I directly enable KDE desktop effects in KDE? Now I have to enable Gnome desktop effects, then KDE desktop effects will be enabled. When I select "enable desktop effects" and press "OK" in KDE, it will tell me "... X configuration ..." something. What the hell is that? I never met this problem in Gnome. Is it a KDE's bug?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSuddenly the application launcher (the one that pops out when pressing the green chameleon button) has changed and I no longer get the formerly so pretty application launcher. Instead I now get a simple context menu style drop down menu.
I first noticed this after I updated PackageKit. is there a way to get this back to the previous applicationn launcher. When adding just the applet (without the button) it still looks the same, just the button doesn't pop it out anymore, as it chose to pop out a grey drop down instead.
This is on OpenSuse 11.4 KDE 4.5 and the latest desktop kernel
I am using openSUSE 11.2, and i want to use configure a scanner app to install drivers for my scanner but it requires root previlages to do so.So Please Can Anyone tell me how can i run configure a scanner as root from the kick off application launcher.

I'm running xfce and I'm trying to create a launcher on the panel that will open a document directly. Is there any way to do this? Do I just need the way to open that document from a terminal?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI switched to xfce after repeated freezes in gnome-panel (2.28.1) due to unresolved 10-year-old bug (more than 8 applications when panel is vertical). My xfce (4.6.1) desktop comes without a shutdown launcher and ctrl-alt-del gives me a screensaver lock I tried adding a launcher, using
Code:
/usr/lib/xfsm-shutdown-helper
But when I restarted the system, I came up with a dysfunctional login panel -- no users shown.
In OpenSuse 11.2 is there anyway I can get a desktop icon/launcher to do a /sbin/reboot, which would bypass the login screen coming up before powering off and on again without having to give the user the root password?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI rebooted my computer recently after installing some updates in Ubuntu and now when grub launches it goes straight to the grub prompt and I don't get a menu. I tried searching around online and have tried what seemed like the most common fix but to no avail:
find /boot/grub/stage1 (returns hd1,0)
root (hd1,0)
setup (hd0) -I also tried (hd1,0) and (hd1)
-then reboot- (still get no menu and goes straight to the prompt)
I then tried booting into Ubuntu live, using apt-get to install Grub, and then running through the install process using similar commands, but to no avail. When I run setup it finds my config info and doesn't show any errors. I have a menu.lst file with lots of entries for different kernel versions and a windows 7 install on hd0,0. I am running Ubuntu Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic-pae.
Is there any way to switch program titles in the Kickoff menu to the actual program name? i.e. "Web Browser" to "Mozilla Firefox" instead.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like to make a launcher that starts a couple of programs at once. When I switch my brain into 'work mode' I'd like one click to start evolution, firefox and sunbird.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04 and I found that after the computer booted, the GRUB stopped by waiting for entering command -- "grub >". The GRUB version is 1.98. I want to go directly to the GRUB boot menu after computer booted.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI normally run 11.3 with the desktop "folder view" but thought I would try something different - I think it was the search and launch view. After playing with it for a while I wanted to change back but found that right clicking on the desktop no longer launches the usual menu. If I change to "netbook form" rather than desktop, the menu is there, but even rebooting has not fixed the problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI got a problem trying to add a luncher in my application menu. I installed netgen and it works fine. If I try to launch it from the terminal like "$ netgen", it does work. It also works if I double click on the program icon in its folder. But when I try to make a launcher in the menu, it doesn't. I tried both Application (nothing happens) and Application in Terminal (I see a window flash for a second and then it disappears).
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have just completed a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire Netbook. The first program I installed was WINE and then I installed "Spotify for Windows". All works well, but I need to start it by opening a terminal and typing - Wine "C:Program FilesSpotifySpotify.exe" which is a little cumbersome.
I want to add a shortcut to the launcher but I cannot find a way to do this. I have found a "Main Menu" option in Applications, but the options and items in there don't seem to correspond to the launcher in any way.
Is there a way of adding something to the launcher or to get the main menu to display so I can customize it from the Main Menu utility.
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but the popup menu is now gone. using KDE 4.4.4 opensuse 11.3. Anyone with an idea of what go hosed, or needs to be unset? where in the .kde directory is the file that needs to be changed?

View 6 Replies View RelatedFirst things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.
I am running 11.04.
My application launcher on the left side and the main menu bar at the top of the screen have disappeared. When I boot up, all I see is my desktop background and "Computer" icon.
I was messing around with the compiz settings and enabled and then disabled the cube effects. When I did so I disabled some plugins but can't remember which ones.
I installed a new theme and my menu bar glitched. I restarted and when i boot up, there is no more menu bar or application bar (running 11.04) I boot into classic or safe mode and the bars are there. i already tried right click > change background > changed theme with no success.
