General :: Main Menu Doesn't Show My App Launcher (desktop File) / Why Is So?

Aug 6, 2010

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...

I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.

Ubuntu :: Create A Dvd That Contains Server Desktop And Alternate Install Opptions - And All Four Main Desktop Environments (gnome - Kde - Xfce - Lxde) And Unity?

Aug 12, 2011

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Ubuntu :: Removing Main Menu From Desktop?

Jun 8, 2010

I'm trying to set up my system(Ubuntu 10.04hat the main menu and its contents (application, places, system, etc) do not appear(or are hidden in such a way that the user cannot access it). This sounds counter-intuitive. I know. I tried deleting them by hand, but they reappear after every reboot. Is there a system file with preferences that I can edit or something else that can be done?

Fedora Installation :: How To Create A Desktop Launcher

Mar 26, 2010

I am having trouble creating a desktop launcher icon for an application that needs to run in terminal mode and is run with "mono". After creating the launcher on the desktop it launches the terminal window and then gives the error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal", and the terminal window is blank. Here are the steps I use to launch the application in a many step process. click on applications/system tools/terminal then in the terminal window I type, cd /var/opensim/Test/bin mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe The above steps work just fine and the instance of the application runs just fine, but it is rather tedious to enter in all that everytime I want to run the application.

1 - place a desktop icon on my desktop to launch the application,

2 - Launch this application when I reboot Fedora so it starts automatically whenever I boot.

The way I created the desktop launcher was to right click on the desktop and select create launcher. I selected "application in terminal" and when I entered in the command line, I added "mono" to the command after navigating to the place the application was with the correct path. Here is the actual command line that is in the launcher that throws the error message.

/var/opensim/Test/bin/mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe

Ubuntu Installation :: Desktop Quirks On Upgrade To 10.10 - New 'unity' Sidebar Launcher Supposed To Replace The Old On-screen Menu?

Oct 10, 2010

Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

Ubuntu ::show Only Applications Running On Active Workspace In Launcher?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm used to use several workspaces (6) for completly different tasks. In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?
