I love the Ubuntu launcher and am currently using it.However I was wondering if it'd be possible to have it stick to the left and not push back into the side.So when a program is maximized it doesn't go over the launcher.
View 3 RepliesI've gotten everything working on my laptop except the webcam. I'm trying to use webkam (from kde repo) but the launcher starts up but the program doesn't start. The driver is "uvcvideo" which loads with no error messages.

I'd like to make a launcher that starts a couple of programs at once. When I switch my brain into 'work mode' I'd like one click to start evolution, firefox and sunbird.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just completed a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire Netbook. The first program I installed was WINE and then I installed "Spotify for Windows". All works well, but I need to start it by opening a terminal and typing - Wine "C:Program FilesSpotifySpotify.exe" which is a little cumbersome.
I want to add a shortcut to the launcher but I cannot find a way to do this. I have found a "Main Menu" option in Applications, but the options and items in there don't seem to correspond to the launcher in any way.
Is there a way of adding something to the launcher or to get the main menu to display so I can customize it from the Main Menu utility.
I have installed Blender from Blender.org. I have installed it my home directory. After launching Blender the icon appears in the unity launcher. Then I fixed the icon in the launcher via the context menu. After restart the Blender icon does not reappear? How can I realize that the Blender icon shows up very time after starting Ubuntu?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.
View 2 Replies View Related1st, I got the OS install. I just want to hide some program launcher from menu bar. In the old Gnome, it work this way, I put the mouse on the menu bar, and then right click, choose preference then I can hide everything I wanna hide. But I can not do that on F12 any more, I tired to refer to Gnome instruction manual on Gnome web site. It seems like they did not change anything on Gnome 2.28. Since the instruction remain the same.
2nd I also want to ask, how do I change the default interface language setting in F12? In previous version I just need to do that in SYSTEM-->Preference. But I can not see the option any more either.
3rd I can not install the NVIDIA proprietary driver even though I got GCC and kernel development header in place. The install log said:" The binary file is not for the kernel" Well, I just use the regular i686 kerenl as usual. It does not make sense it will not work.
I got the driver running by using the rpmfusion driver, not the one from Nvida
By the way, The nouveau driver in F12 works far from OK on my GO 7300. It just like a slave driver that whip the GPU at full out all the time, let alone it does not have 3D capability.
The live cd does not include GCC and kernel development header. That made me feel like walking on the moon but forgot to put the gravity suite on.
I have opensuse 11.4 with KDE. How to add a program launcher directly from the menu to the KDE desktop, but not as a widget?

Anyway, so I created the launcher, e.g. MS Project code...
The Exec command is just a little python script, which checks whether the VM is running and then executes the vmware-unity-helper command with the correct path and all.
The launcher works, when I double-click in in nautilus. But when I drag'n'drop to the unity bar and click it nothing happens. I pulses some (as if the application would start) but nothing happens.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
So, supposedly Gnome Shell is available through synaptic. I just downloaded and installed it and then ran gnome-shell --replace. It doesn't work at all. I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".

I have Wine installed in ubuntu/Kubuntu Jaunty and I can play games like Roller Coaster Tycoon fine in it (it works great and has sound) but when I try to use my disk for Ear training (which is an .exe file) I can view/use the program perfectly except there is no sound, the disk works in the school computers so I know its not faulty, but the sound just doesn't work in Wine.
I changed the format in Wine to all the different Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, etc.) and the sound didn't work in them either, everything in Alsa mixer is turned up 100% and I've tested it with both my head phones and computer speakers, but theres never any sound.
whenever i oped an audio program, it doesn't work. for example in ardour it says, "JACK is running as another user".I think this is the problem for most of them.I searched for JACK and found a folder and it says the user's name is root.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I use a little helper window (like the find and replace dialog) in OOo 3.2 on 10.04 UNR it always comes up maximized, which is kind of irritating, because I have to restore it before it's usable. It's weird that such a window should even have a maximize button, but there you go. No biggie, clearly, but if anyone knew of a workaround that would be great! I'm using the clearlooks theme, although I tried with the new black shiny one and it seems to exhibit the same problem.

For some strange reason no matter what I have tried I am still unable to figure out how to get a web browser to open in a non-minimized state (on its 2nd plus opening) I have tried, FF4, Chromium, Midori and they all do the same thing. View 1 Replies View RelatedI actually like some aspects of the global menu, but the reality is that a better solution for non-maximized windows is to just have the menu in the titlebar, and have title hide when you hover over it to reveal the menu, just like it does for maximized windows. You aren't losing any screen space with this solution.Having to click on a window, then go all the way back to the top left of the screen is hardly a convenience, especially when using a touchpad.

As for many people this is what they like it may be convenient for them, but for the more drag & drop people like me that like to have several open windows on one screen it is rather annoying. It means I must normalize the window every time I start the browser. Is there a way to stop this behavior?
