Networking :: Setting Up / Connect LAN?

Mar 1, 2010

As shown in the image, our lab get the connection from the 'Green-line'.Other network has the IPs 192.168.2.XXX and in our LAN we were given 192.168.1.XXX range. We use Debian server with DNS/DHCP for MAC->IP assignment and name resolution. We can connect to the internet without any problem. My problem is: We can connect (SSH,ping) to the machines with 192.168.2.XXX IPs ,but from that hosts its not possible to connect to our LAN.

Ubuntu Networking :: Proxy Setting Did Not Allow To Connect To Server

Feb 12, 2011

I used windows OS and installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) in separate partition and works well but had a problem in internet connectivity. Likely reason may be the proxy setting that we used in college (currently). I used this commands to set up the IP address and gateway.

ifconfig -a | grep eth
"eth0"
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.5.209 netmask 255.255.255.0

[code]....

Then I manually set the proxy setting of HTTP which is given as proxy server 192.168.5.2 and port as 8000, further more there is a wins setting which is 192.168.1.178, really don't know where to put this number.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Can't Connect To Internet After Setting Static IP For Samba

May 17, 2010

I recently used this process to connect my Samba network to be able to access and allow Windows XP machines to access my computer on my office network.

For various reasons, all the XP computers on the network are set to fixed (do we say static?) IP addresses with manual DNS. Hence I realised during the Samba setup that I had to set a static IP on my Ubuntu machine similar to my Windows static IP's (ie 192.168.10.?) in order to be able to see the Windows share PC's properly.

Once I set my Ubuntu machine to static IP of 192.168.10.3 with subnet of 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.0.1 then I was able to access and be accessed by PC's on the network. However I couldn't access the internet after this. I input the DNS server in the edit connections as you can see per the attachment. All these settings (except the IP address obviously) were all now exactly the same as the PC machines, and I thought I'd now be able to access the windows network, as well as have access to the internet, however, even though my wired network is connected there is still no internet access.

I'm using the GUI under network connections to make all these changes if that is important. I can't understand why this doesn't work?

Server :: Setting Up A NFS To Connect To SAN?

Apr 22, 2010

I have installed RedHat 6 Beta to act as a front-end to my SAN using NFS. I understand how to allow users to connect to the linux box using NFS, what I am confused on is how to connect the SAN to the linux box. If this linux server was a virtual machine, I would just add a HD on the VM then partition, then share it using NFS. Since it is a physical box, I am missing how you would connect the SAN to the NFS server.

Networking :: Kubuntu - Can't Connect To The Internet But Can Connect To The LAN

Nov 12, 2009

I've recently set up a local development webserver using Karmic Koala. I downloaded and installed the server version of Kubuntu and have the web server working.

The problem is that for some reason, I'm no longer able to connect to the internet. I can connect to my router, and other machines in my network can VNC into the server.

I'm using an wired connection to the router and have the server set up on an internal IP of 192.168.0.100. I used to be able to connect to the internet, I downloaded and installed a load of packages etc before it stopped working.

The last thing I remember doing before it stopped working was that I installed Samba so I could share files with the other machines on the network (two Macs running Leopard and a WinXP laptop).

I got the share working - I copied a load of files to the server via the share, rebooted, and for some reason now I can't connect to the net (and other machines can't see the Samba share either.) However I can still VNC into the server.

Networking :: 3 Nics - Connect To Internet - Share To Local Net - And Connect To Local Net - Not Working

Sep 15, 2009

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.

It is running Ubuntu server 8.10

The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.

My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.

I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.

Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.

Fedora Networking :: Setting Localhost As First Dns?

May 2, 2010

i am trying to use a local DNS service (unbound), and for that, i want each connection (eth0, wlan0) to first use localhost as DNS (127.0.0.1) and then try the DNSs it gets from the DHCP. this is a laptop so it is not just setting it for a single connection but a system default.

i looked and searched and there does not seem to be a straightforward way of doing it. i am usign gnome with networkmanager, and setting the method as "get IP only" is not suitable, as it omits the DHCP-provided DNSs, and also cannot be set as the default method.

Fedora Networking :: Setting Up Home DNS?

Oct 30, 2010

I have been looking and trying to set up DNS on my home setup just for kicks and giggles. I know it is supposed to make resolving web pages faster and I am working in a job where I do networking stuff all the time everything I can learn about networking the better. I know HOW DNS works but I have problems finding a How-to for what I want. I would like to state that my knowledge of Linux is very minimal but I have seen what it can do and want to learn how to use it effectively.

I have a FC10 box acting as a gateway (with DHCP for all systems at home), firewall and windows file server (Samba). I have a comcast modem which leads to the gateway and from there to my other systems.

My coworker helped set it up so I didn't really learn much from it but I have some very basiv skills. What I want to do is enable my server to handle what my ISP provides with DNS, I am NOT looking to host webpages, just the query and storage of the IPs for webpages for faster resolving. Every help and how to I have looked at just talks about setting up DNS for a page to host. I installed BIND already and I would like to configure it to deal with this. Any and all help is appreciated, even links to a How-to that pertains to me would be helpful as I am having no luck with that at the moment.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up ISA NIC On An Old Machine?

May 20, 2010

Somebody gave me an old Celeron 333MHz system w/ 96 MB RAM and I thought I would set it up as a little torrent server. So I installed Ubuntu server on it, but it does not see the NIC. I know the NIC functions because the person was using it hooked up to a network until a few days ago. Unfortunately, it's an ISA-based NIC and not PCI and my understanding is that I have to pass it IRQ and DMA settings to get it to work. Unfortunately, I wiped the windows 98 partition without thinking of snagging those settings. First of all, lspci does not show the hardware AT ALL. Here's the output I get:

Code:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440LX/EX - 82443LX/EX Host bridge (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 440LX/EX - 82443LX/EX AGP bridge (rev 03)
00:04.0 USB Controller: OPTi Inc. 82C861 (rev 10)

[code]...

The machine is an old 'Compaq Presario 5050' with a really crappy BIOS that doesn't really offer any help. I read a post somewhere that trying to load the 'ne' driver should work, so I tried:

sudo modprobe ne

and it came back saying "no such device".

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up An Intranet In 10.04?

so in a nutshell i don't want the world wide web to be able to access this server since I use it for development work only and i do most of my actual development work on another system since most of the applications i use requires windows.

I know you can block incoming traffic to all IPs or add individual IPs to allow in, but how can i make the firewall only accept incoming traffic from those within my LAN network?

if you wish to know what I'm using to configure my firewall, I'm using firestarter on this server
