I have two computers running centos 5.5 that have ip addresses in two different networks.(They were in the same network (192.168.1.0/24)and I changed IP address of one to 10.0.0.0/8).
View 1 RepliesI have installed Micro Core onto a usb of mine and am running it on my laptop. I have been able to successfully obtain a connection and valid ip with my router. As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.
Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.
I have 2 10.04 computers and one win 7 and one vista computer: The win computers can see each other and the ubuntu computers, but the ubuntu computers cannot see each other or the win machines. The ubuntu computers connect to the internet fine and can ping each other. I cannot find settings to correct.

But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
I go to system > preferences > network connections in 9.10 and import a profile. The vpn seems to connect but I cannot ping computers on the remote network. When I attempt to ping, it seems it can see an ip (DNS must be working) but I can't actually ping the machine or rdp in. I've disabled my firewall and rebooted and that didn't help. What can I do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.
What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.
I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.

I could use Wireless network. I could see several different networks in my range. Then suddenly the network stoppedworking, and I can no longer see any networks under "Wireless networks".The Wired networks works fine.I tried upgrading ubuntu, but nothing changed. Just to confirm, I rebooted the computer in Windows Vista (Dual boot) andconfirmed that Wireless worked fine there. I have connected xp and fedora through crossover cable . xp has ip address 192.168.0.1/24 (manually assigned) fedora has 192.168.0.2/24 with default route equal to 192.168.0.1
I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

They are both connected to my wireless router to connect to the internet.
I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on 2 laptops (both are identical in terms of hardware). In addition, I connected both of them (using RJ45 cables) to a switch (just a switch; I don't have a router). View 9 Replies View RelatedThis applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

I have attached a diagram to show the layout, but basically I have a server that has 2 nics. I use NIC1 for the server and its services. Im using VirtualBox to run VMs and want to use NIC2 for the VMs exclusively and I want the VMs on a different network completely from the host.Ive tried setting up NIC2 on the other network but I end up with networking problems on network1. Also I cant figure out how to tell VirtualBox to bind to the host NIC2.

Computer A has an external USB hard drive attached, partitioned ext3 and mounted to a folder in computer A's home folder. Computer C is running Vista. I installed Samba, and computer C can access all the files on both computers A and B. But using Samba, computers A and B can't see each other OR computer C. That's not really important to me, but they can't
So I installed NFS and got computers A and B talking that way. I like NFS better. It's faster than Samba. BUT, computer B can't access computer A's USB drive, and I need it to do that. When I'm using computer B and I click on the folder the drive is mounted to, the file manager just shows the folder as empty.
I'm using Ubuntu on my laptop but I'm having a small problem. The network is working fine except for the fact that I can't reach anything on my LAN (can't even ping the router), but everything on the outside works just fine. I can even visit my webserver if I type my public IP.
Where should I begin looking for faults?
