Ubuntu :: Cisco VPN - Cannot Ping Computers On Remote Network

May 21, 2010

I go to system > preferences > network connections in 9.10 and import a profile. The vpn seems to connect but I cannot ping computers on the remote network. When I attempt to ping, it seems it can see an ip (DNS must be working) but I can't actually ping the machine or rdp in. I've disabled my firewall and rebooted and that didn't help. What can I do?

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 / Cisco VPN - Cannot Access Remote Network IPs

Jul 8, 2011

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and the Cisco VPN client with :
apt-get install network-manager-vpnc

I have imported the PCF provided by my employer into the GUI. The group password also seems ok, when I login to the VPN server, I am provided with the "VPN Login message". (On Windoze, I get an Ok/Cancel popup with the same message). In Ubuntu, I don't get to click "Ok" but it looks like I'm connected properly. The /var/log/syslog file contains numerous static routes added, 30 or so. After the Login Message, I see the couple of line:

Jul 8 12:40:51 ubuntu02 vpnc[1613]: can't open pidfile /var/run/vpnc/pid for writing
Jul 8 12:40:52 ubuntu02 NetworkManager[630]: <info> VPN connection 'VPN to my network' (IP Config Get) complete.

I get an IP from the external network correctly as well:

tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:172.16.10.170 P-t-P:172.16.10.170 Mask:255.255.255.0

However, I cannot ping any of the machine on the remote network. None of the network services seems to be accessible. Why the machines on the VPN are not accessible?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Ping Or Ssh When Connected To Cisco VPN Using Vpnc

Jan 21, 2011

When I connect to my company's VPN (it's a Cisco), it connects just fine and displays the broadcast message, but once connected I can't ping anything or ssh anywhere. Not on the private network, not on the Internet [URL], nothing. I can still browse the web without difficulties when connected to the VPN, but no ssh or ping. With ping, it properly resolves the host name, but I get 100% packet loss.

Once I disconnect from the VPN, a ping of [URL] works exactly as expected.

I don't have any firewalls set up on this host that I'm aware of (unless something is installed and configured by default).

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, amd64 build.

OpenSUSE Network :: Nmblookup Resolves But Cannot Ping Netbios Names Or Ping FQDN

Feb 23, 2011

This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

Fedora Networking :: FC10 - Unusual System-config - Unable To Ping Other Computers Or Routers

Jun 2, 2009

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.

Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

First couple times i tried i typed in

After about 15 seconds it would pop back with

I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:

Code:

But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 Home Firewall With IPSec Support For Cisco VPN

Aug 10, 2010

I have a new install of an OpenSuse 11.3 server and I do not see the IPSec Support option when I use Yast to set that I up. I have the firewall setup with 2 interfaces, one external and one internal and that is all working fine. When I connect via my laptop and connect in via a Cisco IPSec VPN, I get connected, but no traffic goes through.

I did search through the forums, but I don't see any hits related to the issue I'm facing. I installed the ipsec-tools, but I am still not seeing the IPSec Support in the firewall section of Yast that I see noted on many Google Searches. Is there a package or something configuration that is needed to get IPSec Support for VPN setup?

General :: Bash Script That Read From File And Ping Remote Host

Feb 13, 2011

Q=What will this do?
A=This will read from /root/Desktop/iplist (or anywhere you want to put the list) after it reads the ip it will ping the ip two times. If the remote host is up then it will write the ip to a log. If the ping fails it will display it on the screen, write the ip to syslog so that you can do remote logging, and last it will send the ip by email to a user or a group of users.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
#wrote by Zach Underwood feb-12-2011
#test and wrote on centos 5.5 with sendmail
rm -f /root/Desktop/iplog #This will remove the good iplog
exec 9</root/Desktop/iplist #put full path the file where ip list is. Make sure that the ips are listed one per line.
while read -u9 ip
do
ping -c 2 $ip > /dev/null 2> /dev/null # ping and discard output
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then # check the exit code
echo "$ip is up" >> /root/Desktop/iplog #write the ip of the hosts that are up
else
echo "$ip is down" # will show on the screen the ips that are not up
logger -p auth.notice "$ip is down" # will write the down host to syslog
echo "$ip is down" | mail -v -s alert user@anydomain.com > /dev/null 2> /dev/null #will send mail users about host down
