Fedora Networking :: Wireless At Run Level 3 Using Public Wifi With Lynx?
Aug 5, 2009I have been trying to test the use of X window forwarding over SSH in a cafe. The Cafe's WiFi requires login via a web browser. Using Fedora 11 with Gnome on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, the wireless works just fine. I am able to use a virtual terminal to ssh to my server at home. NX client/server works also. However, when I change to Run Level 3 on the Laptop in order to use X Window forwarding, wireless networking fails to function. Will wireless networking function at Run Level 3, and if so, how is that accomplished? Also, if I get Wireless to work at Run Level 3, will I be able to login to the free public wifi using Lynx or some other text browser, as I can with IE and Firefox?

Aug 10, 2010I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.
I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.
Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.
Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.
Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

The strange thing is that it not seems that is a X window problem, it looks like more like a configuration problem in some part of the kde script to initialize the log in, because if i manually start the X service it works fine, i dont know what is the source. May 28, 2010I started yesterday off wanting to install this USB wifi adapter on my PC (which is mini-itx so has additional pci slots) [URL] it has the Ralink 3070 chipset. I tried everything I found when googling, nothing came close to working, this was in Fedora12. So I gave up and installed Ununtu 10.04, hoping for better luck there. Ubuntu will recognise the presence of a wifi adapter, here's the output from iwconfig

But it sees no wifi networks and generally won't do anything; I don't think it has the right driver. Rosewill does list a (linux) driver and so does Ralink, but again, neither of these come close to working. has anyone gotten this adapter or chipset to work in ubuntu?

Jun 12, 2011just joined the forum so I am a little lost. I am trying to get my wifi to work on an HP Pavilion tx 1115nr (tx1000 series). I am using Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, my network card is BCM4311 rev1.I have read many threads and tried about everything, but I am so close. I can load bcmwl-kernel-source from the software center, restart and my wifi works for that startup. If I restart my computer again, it no longer works. I can then remove bcmwl-kernel-source and reinstall it and it works just once again.I have blacklisted b43 and ssblsmod reveals that these modules are missing after restart when wifi doesn't work:

Oct 11, 2010I have a laptop that was working fine with 10.04 LTS. Today, I did a full 10.10 install and now my wireless is not working. Thinking it had to do with 10.10, I did a full install back to 10.04 LTs. Wireless is still not working. I tried installing the driver for my laptop's internal wifi using ndiswrapper, but that didn't work either. I have another laptop that is identical to the non-working one, with the exception that it is running a Celeron processor and non-Nvidia graphics. Otherwise, they are identical with respect to the wifi adapter. The Celeron machine is giving me absolutely no problems.

Just done a fresh install (need Linux for some development) but have no wifi. My chipset is this Broadcom BCM4310. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

May 4, 2011I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.
