Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wifi Antenna Recommendation?
Oct 5, 2010an Ubuntu newbie here looking for advice. Apologies if this is a frequent question. I misplaced my Belkin USB wifi antenna recently -- I'd never gotten it working with Ubuntu as I lacked the original driver CD and hadn't bothered doing the footwork with ndiswrapper (without driver files, as Belkin just gives you an .exe) to get it functional. I'm currently living in a home where I can't be wired directly to the router, so I'm looking for advice on what kind of antenna I should get to replace it. Are there any manufacturers out there that provide Linux drivers out of the box, who make quality hardware?

Apr 25, 2010Upgraded to Lucid Beta2 on my 1000HE eee pc. Now unable to connect to wifi. Wifi searches, then decides it needs password. I enter the proper password and it searches again, but never connects. Here's the strange thing: Using latest 2.6.32.21-generic kernel, wifi will not connect. But, when I boot with 2.6.31.20-generic, wifi works fine.

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Feb 19, 2011Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.

On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)
Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)

I have used it to install several iterations of Ubuntu in past year or so, and the wifi worked just fine for Intrepid and Kermic, using b43-fwcutter.However, when I installed Lucid from scratch, I can't get the wife to work.It says it was installed properly, but I can't see any network around.

I tried everything I found when googling, nothing came close to working, this was in Fedora12. So I gave up and installed Ununtu 10.04, hoping for better luck there. Ubuntu will recognise the presence of a wifi adapter, here's the output from iwconfig

But it sees no wifi networks and generally won't do anything; I don't think it has the right driver. Rosewill does list a (linux) driver and so does Ralink, but again, neither of these come close to working. has anyone gotten this adapter or chipset to work in ubuntu?

Jun 12, 2011just joined the forum so I am a little lost. I am trying to get my wifi to work on an HP Pavilion tx 1115nr (tx1000 series). I am using Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, my network card is BCM4311 rev1.I have read many threads and tried about everything, but I am so close. I can load bcmwl-kernel-source from the software center, restart and my wifi works for that startup. If I restart my computer again, it no longer works. I can then remove bcmwl-kernel-source and reinstall it and it works just once again.I have blacklisted b43 and ssblsmod reveals that these modules are missing after restart when wifi doesn't work:

Ubuntu Networking :: New Install Of Lucid Not Seeing Other Machine
Jan 5, 2011Does anyone know of a decent Ubuntu networking tutorial I can work through? I'm struggling to get a new install of Lucid to see anything on my home network.
The current state of play is:
I can browse the internet and the router.
I have several laptops running Ubuntu and a NAS drive but the HP desktop PC with the new Lucid installation can't see them.
The NAS and the HP are wired to the router.
I installed Lucid because I never got Maverick to see the network either.
Lucid on my laptop can see the NAS drive over wireless.
I can see the NAS drive but not the other machines if I boot the HP into WinXP.
I'm not much good at XP networking either so perhaps that needs configuring too. A decent tutorial would be useful, especially one that doesn't assume I have Windows machines on the network as we rarely use Windows now.

I have tried going to the Hardware Drivers utility, but it doesn't find any proprietary hardware.I really am at a loss as to how to make Lucid "start over" with the wifi detection.I have installed Lucid using an existing /home, which was under 8.10. Thinking it had to do with 10.10, I did a full install back to 10.04 LTs. Wireless is still not working. I tried installing the driver for my laptop's internal wifi using ndiswrapper, but that didn't work either. I have another laptop that is identical to the non-working one, with the exception that it is running a Celeron processor and non-Nvidia graphics. Otherwise, they are identical with respect to the wifi adapter. The Celeron machine is giving me absolutely no problems.

May 8, 2010I installed the bleeding edge drivers using a guide I was referred to from the wiki, when I was having intermittent wifi connections. It worked well for about two days, but now it's just as intermittent as before, and it works just fine in OSX and on other machines, so I'm thinking I need to change the driver.

May 4, 2011I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I just used the alternate installer to set up an old box as a server, and it doesn't install the driver for the adapter. lsusb finds the adapter, but I don't get a wlan* listed in /dev/. how I can determine what module(s) are used to run this adapter on the desktop so I can load them on the older box? Or is there some package I should install from the CD to help auto-detect the adapter?
