View 2 Replies View RelatedI just encountered an odd network stack glitch and wondered if anyone has seen this before, or knows what could cause it. When I connect to services on localhost (127.0.0.1) if there is a process listening, it works OK as expected. there is no process listening, I should get a NAK and see a connection refused message. With this glitch, that was not happening. And this was with 127.0.0.1 to 127.0.0.1. Nothing was listening, but the SYN attempts were all that were happening. If there was something listening that worked OK. Connections to other hosts worked as expected.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a Linux box with three ethernet interfaces as a bridge where I can do some packet filtering. I don't want this box to have any IP stack, packets that are allowed through the filter should be forwarded without changes just the way a switch would do it. I have build a kernel with ethernet support but no IP stack. It detects my interfaces, and I can bring them up with the ifconfig or ip commands. But when I try to start a bridge with brctl I get this error message:
can't setup bridge control: Address family not supported by protocol
A google search for that error message gave me no results at all. The command I used was "brctl addbr br", which does work on a full installation. Does brctl require IP support in the kernel? That would be a bit odd I think, since brctl doesn't do anything IP related, everything it does is at lower layers?
Does anybody know what the above message means, and what I might have been doing wrong?
I mistakenly ran 'iptables restart' on a server that was not set to run iptables. Immediately, the server quit making outgoing connections on port 80. It has problems completing a traceroute when another machine on the same VM Host can do everything just fine. One of our best networking technicians diagnosed it as issues with the TCP/IP stack on the OS.
I know that iptables is off, allowing all trafffic incoming/outgoing.
I've got a little server setup on my local network and I'm trying to configure it to use miredo. I've got my laptop successfully using it, but for some reason miredo gives this error when I try to start it:
Code:
Error: IPv6 stack not available.
also running "lsmod | grep ipv6" gives these results
Code:
ipv6 270049 1 cnic
xfrm_nalgo 13381 1 ipv6
I get the impression that ipv6 is not enabled on my server, but I'm not sure how I enable it short of doing a reinstall.
how to disable rSIM in the current bluetooth stack?Starting about a week ago, whenever my phone (Android Captivate) pairs with my ubuntu workstation the rSIM profile is enabled which effectively turns off my cell service since my Ubuntu machine does not have a GSM/3G radio built in.I'd like to disable rSIM altogether so that I can again re-pair my phone to my Linux system. All my searching turn up results for people trying FIX this service...

I was wondering if anyone might know of good reference material, books websites etc., that discuss network security issues in layman terms. I would like to set up a dedicated Linux box as a firewall and would like to have a deeper understanding of the different types of configurations that are possible. I run a dual boot system and most of the firewalls I have used on the Windows side are very confusing to me. A lot of the time they give you a pop up that informs you that some cryptically named program is trying to access the network or the internet and wants to know if I want it to or not, 99% of the time I have not idea if it is a legitimate program or not. I realize that this is probably a separate issue (knowing how to identify programs and processes that should have access from those that should not) from setting up a firewall and basic network security but I know that they are related.

My issue is that there seems to be a socket bound to a port blocking MongoDB from accessing it's usual port 27017. The strange thing that it was working just fine until recently and I can't figure out what I did to screw things up... I can make it use a different port but the reason why it can't bind to the default port and why I can't fix it is really bothering me. I've tried rebooting the machine even with nothing else running when I try to run Mongo is still blocked giving the following message:
Code:

I have several users on handhelds and they like to let their sessions time out. Their zombie processes then cause record locks.I've come up with calls for killing the pids for any prior sessions started by a given user. This procedure would be executed in the .bash_profile.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.
I have a process running on Linux. When i do ps -eaf | grep <myProcess>, it show muliple entries for <myProcess> with different pids for each entry.Kindly tell me what could be the reason for a process having multiple pids?

View 3 Replies View Relatedfor the last one week i'm facing problem in sharing internet between xp and fedora. I'm connected to internet through wireless adapter in xp and wants to share internet through crossover cable between xp and fedora. I did the following steps.
1: start a network setup wizard in xp.
2: change the smb.conf file in fedora and change the workgroup name to same as in xp.
3:in Xp the ethernet adapter has address 192.168.0.1/24.
4: when i connect the crossover cable and start fedora. it couldn't get the ip address through dhcp.
5: when i tried giving the ip address manually "192.168.0.2/24 with gateway 192.168.0.1"and save the subnet mask is replaced by 192.168.0.1 don't know why it not saved.

Ive got my laptop hindered up to my xbox 360 it has windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. i realy want to get rid of windows and the only reason i keep it around is because ics sharing works realy well for connecting to xbox live.
I recently discovered that you can (ics) with ubuntu which is awesome only problem is
i cant figure out how to set it up to stop it having moderate NAT so i can play games that require an open NAT. its probably due to the ports not being fowarded properly or somthing and/or the face that my xbox needs a static ip placed out side the routers firewall on the DMZ setting .
I have a MediaGate MG35 which allows me to play movies and things via my network from my computer. This worked fine with Vista, but when I upgraded to Windows 7 the samba sharing changed and my MediaGate was no longer able to gain access to my shares on 7. My solution was using VirtualBox with Ubuntu. This worked fine on 9.10. I did this by creating a folder in my /media folder called windows-share, giving it a share called movies with Guest access. and then adding the following line in the rc.local file to mount the windows share though VirtualBox:
mount -t vboxsf movies /media/windows-share/
(movies being the name I gave the shared folder in VirtualBox) So I had to do was start the VirtualBox and everything was setup without me having to do anything. This then allowed me to get to my movies saved in windows with my MediaGate. This worked great. I've now got Ubuntu 10.04 on a new VirtualBox. I've set up everything the same, but when I try to access the shared folder, it doesn't work. If I try to access it with windows, it says that the share is not accessible or I don't have access. This ONLY happens to the folder that has been mounted to, any other folder I share works fine.
