Networking :: Sharing WEP Key Across All Users

Dec 23, 2008

I'm on the road with a laptop and my wife. I can get into various networks (like my father in law's) but just to make life nicer, I'd /like/ to only have to enter the wep key once ... in my profile. For instance: I get on the network under my profile. I then log off, and my wife logs on. She has to enter the wep key in her profile. She logs off and a cousin logs on (on our anonymous account that has limited privileges) and they also need to enter the wep key. Any way to share the wep key across all accounts? I'm using network manager in ubuntu hardy.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nfs And Sharing Users Between Boxes

Oct 18, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 So I have four boxes. One has all the users on it and it is the nfs-server. The other 3 are nfs-clients. I need to be able to share all users between the boxes. I have mounted the /home directory from the server onto the three clients as well as the /usr/local folder, however I am still unable to log in as anybody but the root on the clients.

I am not even sure how to search for this (I keep getting results on how to mount the home directory, and information about adding multiple users to a single box).

Ubuntu :: Sharing Folders Between Users?

Feb 14, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Wine Installations With Other Users?

May 12, 2010

sharing a wine installation across the system but I haven't managed to get them to work (you'd think that this is something that would have been implemented properly a LONG time ago. Crossover has a rubbish version of it but I wanted to get it to work in Wine). Here's what I did (it works insofar as office 2003 can be used but the menu entries don't (as of yet) appear in the different users' menus):

Regular install of wine, start wine on my profile and let it build all its stuff. DO NOT INSTALL ANY PROGRAMMES YET (I did the first time and it didn't work afterwards). Create user and group "wine" with disabled password/login and no home dir. Move system.reg and drive_c to /wine and chown wine:wine, chmod 0775 (both recursively, bien sur).

Add all users to the "wine" group. Make symlinks to drive_c and system.reg in my .wine directory. Copy ~/.wine to all the other users' home directories, delete user specific registration files user.reg and userdef.reg. Chown the .wine directory for each user.
Install Office 2003 (for me at least) or whatever programmes you want (I've only tried this is Office 2003).

chown wine:wine /wine -R because your installation will have messed things up a bit.
Now cd (in Terminal, obviously) to /wine/drive_c/users. If you ls you'll see a folder called Public and a folder with your user name (mine is "gideon"). cp your home directory (recursively again) for each of your other users who you want to be able to use wine. Chown their user folders to user_name:wine (recursively - I'm going to stop writing that, just assume it). su as each user, go into their user directory and you'll see something like this (ls -al):

Code:

drwxr-xr-x 13 gideon wine 4096 2010-05-12 13:09 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 wine wine 4096 2010-05-12 13:31 ..
drwxr-xr-x 3 gideon wine 4096 2010-05-12 13:10 Application Data

[code].....

Ubuntu :: External Hardrive - Sharing With Other Users On The Same Computer

Jan 17, 2010

I am having issues with sharing an external hard drive with other users on a computer. For example if I reboot and login with user A and then logout and login with user B, I am not able to mount the external hard drive. If I reboot and login with user B first, I can then access the external hard drive with user B but not user A. Is there a way that both users can use the drive without having to reboot every time?

I am assuming this is some sort of security issue. If I login with the second user and go to /mnt/external harddrive I get a permission error."You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "External Drive"." If I login with the first user and try to set the permission it doesn't give me the ability?

for some reason this drive is mounted at /media/TREKSTOR_ with johnny as the owner. I can't seem to chown the drive to audio. If I unmount the device, and remount it, the owner is set to johnny again. I need to access this drive from the audio account. It's a 1TB drive, so I wouldn't be able to reformat it to EXT3 easily as it's almost 60% full.

Fedora Networking :: Mapping Windows Users On Unix Users

Sep 29, 2010

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.

Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?

Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Fedora Networking :: Sharing Internet Between Xp And It

May 21, 2009

for the last one week i'm facing problem in sharing internet between xp and fedora. I'm connected to internet through wireless adapter in xp and wants to share internet through crossover cable between xp and fedora. I did the following steps.

1: start a network setup wizard in xp.
2: change the smb.conf file in fedora and change the workgroup name to same as in xp.
3:in Xp the ethernet adapter has address 192.168.0.1/24.
4: when i connect the crossover cable and start fedora. it couldn't get the ip address through dhcp.
5: when i tried giving the ip address manually "192.168.0.2/24 with gateway 192.168.0.1"and save the subnet mask is replaced by 192.168.0.1 don't know why it not saved.

i tried changing new ethernet card but not worked. some time avc denials message "SELinux is preventing consoletype (consoletype_t) "read" to /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-eth0.leases (dhcpc_state_t)." comes. can any one tell me how to enable or make a network in fedora . i 'm very new in linux and couldn't able to share network .

I recently discovered that you can (ics) with ubuntu which is awesome only problem is
i cant figure out how to set it up to stop it having moderate NAT so i can play games that require an open NAT. its probably due to the ports not being fowarded properly or somthing and/or the face that my xbox needs a static ip placed out side the routers firewall on the DMZ setting .

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Change Between 9.10 And 10.04

May 20, 2010

I have a MediaGate MG35 which allows me to play movies and things via my network from my computer. This worked fine with Vista, but when I upgraded to Windows 7 the samba sharing changed and my MediaGate was no longer able to gain access to my shares on 7. My solution was using VirtualBox with Ubuntu. This worked fine on 9.10. I did this by creating a folder in my /media folder called windows-share, giving it a share called movies with Guest access. and then adding the following line in the rc.local file to mount the windows share though VirtualBox:

mount -t vboxsf movies /media/windows-share/

(movies being the name I gave the shared folder in VirtualBox) So I had to do was start the VirtualBox and everything was setup without me having to do anything. This then allowed me to get to my movies saved in windows with my MediaGate. This worked great. I've now got Ubuntu 10.04 on a new VirtualBox. I've set up everything the same, but when I try to access the shared folder, it doesn't work. If I try to access it with windows, it says that the share is not accessible or I don't have access. This ONLY happens to the folder that has been mounted to, any other folder I share works fine.

Networking :: HP Officejet Printer Sharing

Oct 20, 2010

I just installed an HP Officejet 6200 on a Slackware 12.1 machine. It uses a USB interface. If I am on the machine, I can print to it with no problem. When I am on my Debian or Centos machines, I cannot. I have midified the cupsd.conf file to allow everyone to connect to it but so far have not had any success. Port 631 is open on all machines. I have explicitly added a hosts allow 192.168.0.0/24 line in several portions of the conf file with no luck. If I use the cups interface on any of the machines using localhost:631 as the address, I can not only see the printer I can print to it, but I noticed, I am actually attached to the Slackware machine where the printer is located. Can someone suggest a debugging method to help?

Networking :: Printer Sharing Isn't Working

Jan 31, 2011

I am having problems trying to share a printer on my desktop. The printer is an HP Laserjet 1020, and the desktop is running 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic. None of the other boxes on the network (wired/wireless, 32-bit/64-bit, Ubuntu Lucid/Win7/XP) can access the printer.

I have checked all of the appropriate boxes in printer properties and server settings. When I try to install the printer on the other systems, I am asked for a username and password on the desktop. I set up a user named "printer" and gave it a password, but when I try to use that username/password to install the printer on one of the other systems, I get an "access denied" error. All of the networked systems can see each other, and access shared files.

Fedora Networking :: Sharing And Networking - "public" Folder Did Not Become Open Until I Entered The User Password

Jul 28, 2009

I am an old Ubuntu user and have just strted running F11 on my iBook. I always run system-config-samba on all my machines including my server and even on my work server which shares with windows, Linux and OSX and have found it to be perfect. I installed it straight away on the new Fedora system but It doesn't seem to be functioning the way i expected it to.

I installed system-config-samba and then set up one share folder "Public" with open read write privileges and then turned off the Fedora Firewall all together. But "public" did not become open until I entered the user password for the fedora machine. But, then I could see all folders on the Fedora machine. Even root on the fedora machine became write-able on the network. This was not the desired effect at all. I am assuming fedora is using a non system-config-samba file share system that I am unfamiliar with. what is it? and how does it work?

Fedora Networking :: Can't Get NFS File Sharing Working

Feb 24, 2010

So, I have 2 computers both running fedora 12. I have installed NFS, all of the nfs utilities, and the system-config-nfs thing. I have unblocked the ports in the firewall. I am certain that NFS is running (or at least that when I nmap myself, an nfs port is open). However, when I go into nautilus and go to network, it shows windows network, but no other computers. If I run nmap on localhost, or on my OWN IP, it shows that it's up. and NFS is up. but when I NMap the other computer, it's hidden and blocking ping probes (though using nmap -PN will penetrate that mask, and show that it too has NFS open.)

So, how can I get these two computers to recognize each other? or am I doing this whole thing all wrong? I'm just trying to set up file sharing.
