Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Identify Process/Unbind Socket Blocking MongoDB

Mar 27, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, and I'm a newbie when it comes to networking.

My issue is that there seems to be a socket bound to a port blocking MongoDB from accessing it's usual port 27017. The strange thing that it was working just fine until recently and I can't figure out what I did to screw things up... I can make it use a different port but the reason why it can't bind to the default port and why I can't fix it is really bothering me. I've tried rebooting the machine even with nothing else running when I try to run Mongo is still blocked giving the following message:

Code:
ropes@ropes:~/mongodb-linux-x86_64-1.8.0/bin$ ./mongod
./mongod --help for help and startup options
Sun Mar 27 14:08:14 [initandlisten] MongoDB starting : pid=2718 port=27017 dbpath=/data/db/ 64-bit

[Code]....

Software :: Identify What Process Are Making Up The WA Statistic?

Dec 23, 2008

I have a WA% between 50-80%.

So I have a few questions.

1. Is that WA% only disk I/O or can it include network IO?
2. How do I identify which processes are making up that WA statistic?
3. Why does iostat report 100% utilization when the drive read/write speeds are under 1MB/s?

The reason I'm asking.

My Oracle stats are saying that the drives are running at about 5MB/s right now, the WA is 55%, and the iostat -m -x is reporting the drives running at 100% utilization with a read/write rate under 1MB/s. The read speed of the drive is 98MB/s (tested with hdparm -tT when I installed the drives)

I know I have a few queries using full tables scans which I'm working on but I'd think that 100% utilization should be running at the full 98MB/s.

I want to try to identify which process (most likely and oracle one) is using the 100% utilization/55% WA.

Networking :: /usr/sbin/in.telnetd: Getpeername: Socket Operation On Non-socket?

May 5, 2009

I had installed Fedora 10

Below is the output of uname -a

Linux 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.PAE #1 SMP Tue Nov 18 12:08:10 EST 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I need to enable telnet service on it, then found xinetd and telnet-server not installed,

Then I had installed below
First I had installed Xinetd: xinetd-2.3.14-21.fc10.i386.rpm
then I had installed telnet-server: xinetd-2.3.14-21.fc10.i386.rpm

After installation I executed below commands

Service xinetd start
Chkconfig xinetd on
Chkconfig telnet on
Service iptables stop
Chkconfig iptables off
Iptables F

After I had tried telnet localhost ----IT FAILED

when I run telnet server manually by issuing the below command
/usr/sbin/in.telnetd, I get below error

I have other system running same OS, I had followed the same steps discussed above to enable telnet, It works fine on it.

Ubuntu :: Unbind A Key From Xfwm?

Jun 14, 2010

I need to send a java application the CTRL+F11 key sequence. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to do it from xfce, because it seems to be some default key binding.
Is there any way of sending that key combination to the application (either by removing it from XFCE, or by sending it via a command line directly to the application)?

I've looked in the Keyboard panel in Xfce settings, and there is no binding for CTRL+F11. However, if I try to add a new key binding, it says it is used by xfwm.

Networking :: Multiple FTP Upload Socket Error "Connection Reset By Peer: Socket Write"

Jan 31, 2010

I am pragmatically trying to upload a list of files from my client machine to a proFTPd server I have running on Ubuntu. Every time I get several (around fifty) files into the transfer, I get the following error: Quote: Connection reset by peer: socket write error

I am able to remotely upload 25,000 small files of ~ 1K in size, but when I go to upload hundreds of 2-4 Mb files, I get a socket write error. Am I using up all available sockets before they can be released? If so, how do I release the sockets? If not, what does this error mean and why am I getting it?

General :: Child Processes Of A Parent Process Occupying Socket Memory?

Jul 22, 2010

I am facing an issue where the process starts hanging. When I closely look at the logs I come to know that some of the child processes that are forked by the parent process are not finished.

1) Is it possible that the child processes that are not finished occupy the socket memory of the parent process and ultimately a point is reached where no socket memory is available to fork new child processes.

2) What is the standard limit of socket memory in linux?

3) What is the fate of such child processes (as I have mentioned above)?

4) How to debug such cases so that the exact problematic area is identified?

Networking :: Network Security - How To Identify Programs And Processes

Sep 2, 2010

I was wondering if anyone might know of good reference material, books websites etc., that discuss network security issues in layman terms. I would like to set up a dedicated Linux box as a firewall and would like to have a deeper understanding of the different types of configurations that are possible. I run a dual boot system and most of the firewalls I have used on the Windows side are very confusing to me. A lot of the time they give you a pop up that informs you that some cryptically named program is trying to access the network or the internet and wants to know if I want it to or not, 99% of the time I have not idea if it is a legitimate program or not. I realize that this is probably a separate issue (knowing how to identify programs and processes that should have access from those that should not) from setting up a firewall and basic network security but I know that they are related.
