With this advice by my AR5001 card can finally be detected by other devices. I can connect to it with my girlfriend`s net-book with XP, but I still can`t share internet. May be I miss something. I haven`t shared wifi before.

I installed 11.04 some time ago. I got my printer to work, but I have tried to use wireless and I cant. I can perfectly connect using a wired connection but on the network menu in the taskbar it tells me that wireless is turned off by hardware switch. I am suspecting that I don't have the drivers for my atheros wireless card, but when I click on additional driers it tells me that there are no drivers to download. how to configure my wireless card to work with natty?

We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

I've used it prior to my 10.10 upgrade, so I was very surprised to learn it doesn't support Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which I've been using on every Ubuntu version since I started with the 9.0x series.
Does any body know how to get around this? According to the Software center, Thunderbird is available for installation, but the install fails saying (no surprises!!) "Requires installation of untrusted packages"

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get my wireless card working in master mode. I am running Jaunty server 2.6.28-11 x86_64. I have compiled hostapd with nl80211 enabled. The interface is using ath9k. I have tried to compile compat-wireless with this patch. However IEEE80211_IF_TYPE_AP was undefined along with IEEE80211_IF_TYPE_VLAN. In addition the latest version of compat-wireless needs to be patched for kernels < 2.6.31 with this. However when using this patch IRQ_WAKE_THREAD is still undefined.

I'm just having a bit of trouble with activating my wireless card (see title for details). rfkill - I installed it but nothing was soft / hard blocked (whatever they mean). I did the rfkill unblock command anyway but it didn't appear to change anything Tried doing it manually through system-config-network but this yielded no luck either. Basically all it does is continually ask for my WEP key, even though I've typed it in correctly a million times. why I don't have WPA2 because I do not have the ability to change it
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a used computer (Toshiba Satellite A215-S5829) for Christmas, and it was running Vista *shudder* so I decided to wipe the hard drive, and install the latest Ubuntu. This is my first real foray into linux, and I've loved the system, but the only problem I've had with is so far is I can't get the wireless to work. I believe the card it has is Atheros AR5001, and I've tried installing the "madwifi" drivers, but I can't get them to register. I've been following the suggestions of dozens of different forum posts and answers I've found scattered around the internet, but I haven't been able to get anything to work correctly.
When I view the "Additional Drivers" in System > Administration, it says "Alternate Atheros "madwifi" driver: This driver is activated but in use," but when I click on the internet icon in the top panel, it only gives me the wired connection. It used to also give me the wireless option, just without ever successfully finding any wireless networks to which it could connect. Like I said, I've done about a half-dozen different things without any success.
The problem is wireless connections show up in the connections list but when I try to connect it will just keep trying to connect and will never actually complete. During the connecting process it will constantly ask for my WPA2 key. Wired connection does work but that is only a temporary fix to this problem. View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a little netbook, and all works fine, except for one small thing. I'm able to connect to a wireless network with my Atheros AR5001 just fine. However, if I right click on the network icon, and disable network or wireless and enable it again, wireless won't work anymore. I can't see and connect to any network at all. Except when using airodump-ng from the famous aircrack-ng tool set. When using airodump I'm able to see any network and their specs just fine. I don't even have to be in monitor mode to do airodump-ng (the wireless must be off in the network manager though). Is there any way of getting my wireless back when I turn it on again?

View 1 Replies View RelatedA Toshiba 35MX-S114 laptop with Atheros AR5001 works but unless the laptop is in the same room as the router I am not able to connect.
After a relative gave me their old laptop, I installed 10.04 Lucid but I am having problems with the Atheros AR5001 based wifi. I've been able to update the OS using wifi with the laptop in the same room as the router. If I move about 9 metres away from the router into another room, with applet showing 3/4 blue bars and effectively still within line of sight of the router, I lose the connection. Wifi receive is working so well that the Network Manager Applet detects several of my neighbours' routers but not well enough for me to connect to our router.
Originally on the Toshiba laptop under XP there's supposed to be a hotkey Fn+F8 which enables/disables the wifi antenna, in contrast Fn+F9 does disable the touchpad as stated in the manual.
My router is recognised but I cannot connect. Is it a driver issue?

I've been having problems with the Atheros AR5001 wireless card in my EEE PC. Whenever I'm connected to an encrypted network of any description (WPA2 at home, WPA-PSK at work), the connection will drop out after some time, ask for the key again, then will drop out after a shorter time. This repeats until it's continuously asking for the key. This is no problem with an unencrypted connection. I've installed the madwifi module as per the instructions in this thread, but that doesn't seem to have helped.Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS, 2.6.32-33-generic i686 kernel.

The adapter I purchased (Zonet ZEW2508 ) uses the Ralink 2070 chipset - a fact that originally excited me because Ralink seems to be fairly loving to the Linux community. However, despite my best efforts I can't get the thing to work. Initially I tried following directions to set up the driver you can download from the Ralink website. The directions I found were written February first, and Ralink updated the driver February eighth - so as far as I can tell the directions no longer work. After screwing around trying to figure that out for a while I decided to give ndiswrapper a go.
Initially this seemed promising. I just harvested the drivers from the CD and followed one of the many ndiswrapper directions available - most helpful seemed initially to be the Ndiswrapper Troubleshooting Guide found in this forum, however the solutions offered there didn't work either. When I throw an ndiswrapper -l into the terminal it looks promising at first, it tells me the driver is installed and the device is present, but it just doesn't work. When I try iwconfig, or iwlist scan it tells me "no wireless extensions," and "interface doesn't support scanning" respectively. The only devices even listed are lo, eth0, and pan0. There's no wlan0 or anything of the sort.

Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.
Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.
ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.
Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.
Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).
Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.
I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.
I just recently installed a fresh copy of 9.10 server on an older machine I had laying around to use as a router and home server. Everything is setup and I'm on the net on it, except for some reason the Netgear GA311 I'm using for the internal network doesn't seem to be loading a driver. I've tried modprobing 8139 (which it says isn't found) as well as 8139too, 8139 too goes through ok, but it doesn't make any change, with lshw still claiming that it is "unclaimed". It seems that the Realtek chipset this card is based on is extremely compatible with Linux and I'm having trouble finding anyone with a similar issue with it.

I'm setting up an LTSP server using Ubuntu 10.4 64bit, and PXE connecting with thin clients using Atheros cards. The ltsp environment is 32bit.
Unfortunately I get an error message with "No interfaces found! Aborting..." and a kernel panic early during PXE boot.
After an enormous amount of investigation, I've narrowed it down to (probably) being the fact that the ltsp chroot environment doesn't have the correct driver for my network card (I believe it's atl1c). The correct driver IS available in Ubuntu, though, as I can successfully boot the thin client from both 64bit and 32bit live CDs and bring up the network interface.
how can I install the correct driver in the PXE environment?

I am severe wireless problems with Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop.(Spec below)
I have just performed the first clean install since new. Installed a new Hard Drive as well. The machine and wifi was fine under Ubuntu 9.04.
It is booting much faster now but the wifi keeps dropping off.

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.
