Networking :: Difference Between Zone And Domain?

View 2 RepliesI've got a home server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 and several machines running Ubuntu Desktop (9.04 and 8.04) and Windows (XP, Vista and 7). Now what I want to do is to create a domain and directory server similar in function to Windows Server w/ AD and join my other machines to the domain, but am not sure where to start. I already have file shares with Samba but now I want to setup a domain.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAt the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.
Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.
So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.
Is there a way to show print all zones and associated records in BIND?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a server which time zone is in GMT format. I have a user which is also get time zone variable in GMT. But I want to run script which will start from crontab in EST time zone. For that Im not suppose to give extra entry in crontab. May be it would be in script.
How can I achieve this?
I have set up a master DNS server at 192.168.50.9 and a slave DNS at 192.168.50.6. Both servers are BIND9.Machines are for testing/experimenting, hence the IP addresses. Initially, the zone transfer was blocked by the firewall on the master, as the slave uses randomly selected non-privileged ports for zone-transfer query. So, as far as I understand, there are two possible approaches:
1. Allow connections based on source, which should be
Code:
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -s 192.168.50.6 --sport 1024:65535 --dport 53 -j ACCEPT
(and it works for me fine)
2. Allow ESTABLISHED and RELATED connections, which would be something like
Code:
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
which was my initial idea but didn't work, but has inspired me to dig deeper into firewall configuration topics :).
Question: Does zone change notification message count for opening a dialog, or notification from master and slave zone update request are two absolutely separate actions? If the latter is true, that, of course, explains why option #2 didn't work.
I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I am not new to linux but new to network services... search engines weren't friendly when asked this question at the search bar...

View 3 Replies View RelatedAt work, we run Windows... Windows domain, windows workstations, etc. Today my boss asked me my thoughts on running an Ubuntu lab within the mixture of our existing Windows setup.
Well, that brought several questions to mind. So I understand you can bind an Ubuntu computer to a Windows domain, seems easy enough, whether you do it through Samba or the other guide I read that I kind of forget at the moment, but anyway...
I was just curious how Ubuntu interacts with domain users when on the windows domain. For example, if we have an Ubuntu machine on the Windows domain with a local user "administrator" and that's it, would any domain users be able to log into the Ubuntu work station, similar to how it is on Windows?
I want to host 5 websites on my new virtual server so I have created 2 nameservers that point to my virtual server's IP addresses as a glue record. What confuses me is when I create a new domain on my server it gives the new domain it's own nameservers (ns1.thenewdomain.co.uk etc) do I need to change these records so they use the nameservers I created earlier? If I do? Which particular records should I change? I'm running a Unix virtual server with a Plesk control panel.

below is brief--
I have a Linux machine which is on my network but not on my domain. I have configured SAMBA FILESERVER for file sharing purpose. I have a Windows XP PC which is on the domain(windows server) that I am trying to connect to a share on the Linux box. I supply my credentials but regardless of which login I use I always get Logon Failure. I have created an account on the Linux machine with the same user name and password as my domain account but so far no luck. Can I connect from a domain PC to a non-domain Linux box? Is there something else I should be checking?
I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe other day my 7 year old Belkin-G router packed up and I had to buy a new one. I purchased a ZyGEX wireless-N router that claims to be capable of 300mbs communication on my home network. I have five computers networked and on each of them the network speed is only 5 or 6 mps. The reason I ask this question is while I was only getting 54mps speed with my old router, it was much faster than this one.
I also am asking if anyone knows if the adapter on the laptop or desktop not being compatible with wireless-N could be causing this. Is there anyway to increase network speed in such a situation. I might mention that I am only talking about the speed within my home network, not the broadband download and upload speeds (which is also crap, but not related to this case.)
I've noticed that when Linux boots on different machines or with different versions, the network card is assigned to eth0 or to eth1, when there is only one network card. What is the difference and is there any way to tell which one it will be for any machine or version?

Is there a way to know the dns entries of a certain domain? Let's say I want to know its IN A records on their DNS Server. I know you can find the MX Record using the host command but I want to know the other IN A records associated with the specific domain.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI realize this is not a Linux specific question, but I figure Linux admins have a better understanding of networking in general. I assume this is a very basic/beginner question, but it has been puzzling me for a little while. Here goes: If I register a new domain (let's mydomain123.com) and I want to use my own DNS server. After registering the domain name, at the registrar, I want to set my DNS servers to be:
[URL]
My question is, how does the registrar (or root name servers) know what the ip address of ns1.mydomain123.com is? I will obviously set the IP address on my dns servers. At first glance, I would think this is impossible, since ns1 is just a record inside the specific domain that it is authoritative for. However, I have seen several examples companies who have a setup exactly like this.
Domain name which is registered on the DNS for an IP and the name of the host with that IP need not be the same. am i right? I mean domain name and host name need not be the same. Is this correct?

address of the machine on which Bind is running. The problem is that I am not able to ping open-ims.test domain name. If I use IPv4, everything works fine but how to ping domain using IPv6.
I have also made changes in dnszone file by replacing IPv4 address with IPv6 address and also changing A to AAAA.
