Fedora Networking :: Detect A Wireless LAN MAC Address Spoofing?

Jan 29, 2010

How to detect a wireless LAN MAC address spoofing?

I am in an institution where we've got a wired and a wireless network, and almost every day i found a new and a strange MAC addresses in my network.

I know that because i've recorded all the MAC addresses which belongs to my network. More over, all the boxes have a fixed IP address.

So, how to detect the spoofing BOX(s) ?

Debian :: MAC Spoofing In Jessie Fails

Feb 23, 2016

I keep most of my files on my server, but fiddle with them using NFS from one or another of my laptops - so they all have static IPs assigned by my router. If I want extra speed I plug in an Ethernet cable. My old DI524 wireless G router seems quite happy to have two MAC addresses (Ethernet and wireless) assigned to the same static IP, so long as I don't try using both simultaneously. However three Wireless N routers I've tried won't allow this, nor will dd-wrt.

I really don't want to have to set up every laptop as two separate hosts on my network. 'orrible complications.

Best solution I can think of is to get the Ethernet card to spoof the wireless MAC address with e.g. macchanger, as per this excellent page here: [URL] ....

I don't mind running a script manually to do that on each occasion.

This works perfectly on my old R50 Thinkpad running Debian Squeeze, but on my R60 (running Wheezy) and T400 (running Jessie), macchanger works initially, BUT as soon as I hit 'enable networking' in the Network Manager applet, the ethernet card reverts to its original setting. So of course then my router allocates a random IP and so NFS won't work.

Exactly the same goes for the iproute method 'ip link set dev eth0 address [fakemac]' - ifconfig shows it's worked, but it reverts as soon as NetworkManager goes back up.

I don't know where Network Manager (if it is that) is getting the Ethernet card's original MAC from, it seems to be listed in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules, so on the T400 (Jessie) I've even tried creating a file in /etc/udev/rules.d/75-mac-spoof.rules along the lines suggested in that archlinux page I mentioned -
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="[original MAC]", RUN+="usr/bin/ip link set dev %k address [fake MAC]"

but it seems to have no effect.

Short of reverting to Debian Squeeze on all my laptops, I don't know what else to do. Or getting into my router and reassigning the IP / MAC address by hand every time (!).

(If there's a better way to swapping easily from wireless to Ethernet when required, I'd like to know.)

Ubuntu Servers :: Postfix Sender Spoofing - Implement Some Address Mapping To Users?

Feb 8, 2010

I've set up an email server as per this howto: [url]

In a nutshell, it uses a combinatio of postfix, dovecot, amavis (ClamAV and SpamAssisan) and mysql.

However, with this setup, authenticated users are able to spoof outgoing message by simple changing the "from" tag.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could implement some address mapping to users?

In this setup, postfix users are NOT system users, by are stored in the database.

Fedora Networking :: What Is The Difference Between Wireless-N And -G?

Mar 19, 2010

The other day my 7 year old Belkin-G router packed up and I had to buy a new one. I purchased a ZyGEX wireless-N router that claims to be capable of 300mbs communication on my home network. I have five computers networked and on each of them the network speed is only 5 or 6 mps. The reason I ask this question is while I was only getting 54mps speed with my old router, it was much faster than this one.

I also am asking if anyone knows if the adapter on the laptop or desktop not being compatible with wireless-N could be causing this. Is there anyway to increase network speed in such a situation. I might mention that I am only talking about the speed within my home network, not the broadband download and upload speeds (which is also crap, but not related to this case.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Find Any Difference Between The Systems

Jan 20, 2011

I have 3 pc's on home network. All dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. All have Samba installed, plus personal file sharing. When all 3 are booted into linux, all 3 show the public folders on all 3 pc's, but only 2 can access the other pc's folders.

I can't find any difference between the systems to explain why one pc (10.04) cannot mount either of the other two public folders: Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

even though their icons are shown in 'network'. The public folder on the troublesome pc can be accessed from the other two (10.04 & 10.10).

Networking :: Find Out What Is The Difference Between Wifi0 And Ath0 (atheros Wifi Card) In Terms Of Packet Counters Shown In Proc/net/dev Pseudofile

Aug 20, 2010

I'm trying to find out what is the difference between wifi0 and ath0 (atheros wifi card) in terms of packet counters shown in proc/net/dev pseudofile. The fact is that wifi0 and ath0 packet counters are different. I've read that wifi0 refers to the physical device and ath0 refers to virtual device over wifi0, so, as far as I know, packets counters in both devices should be the same, isn't it? Another annoying question for me is that ath0 doesn't show any erroneous packets, while wifi0 does.

Ubuntu :: What's The Difference Between L And Ls

Sep 18, 2010

I've typed 'l' instead of 'ls' in the terminal by mistake a couple of times, and it seems to do pretty much - but not exactly - the same as 'ls' ('l' appends *, @ etc at the end of filenames which seem to indicate permissions and/or links).

I can't find any documentation on 'l'. 'l --help' gives exactly the same output as 'ls --help'. 'which l' gives nothing. There are no files in my filesystem called only 'l' either - just a couple of unrelated folders.

So what's the difference between l and ls?

If you have ever been in a situation where one was better than the other could you please tell me about it? My question is related to troubleshooting a dual-monitor setting but this is another thread, here I'm just asking because I wish to learn a bit more about displays in general.
