Ubuntu :: Can't Set Chromium - Asks For Default Browser Every Time
Apr 28, 2011
I have Chromium on 11.04 and I can't set it to be default. If I go into preferences and select it, nothing happens. If I open Chromium, it asks every single time if I want it to be my default browser. Regardless of what I say, it asks me each time.

For some reason, i cannot set my default browser to Chromium. Whenever i open up Chromium, it asks whether it should be the default browser or not. I say yes i mean "Set as default" But nothing happens. When i open it again, i am greeted with the same question again.

So I've been poking around google and trying to figure out if there's an answer - or at least a semi-solution to this problem, and have come up with nothing. I've just recently installed Chromium and since I've had it on my Windows 7 install, I'm trying to set it as my default browser, but for some reason it doesn't seem to stay my default browser.
Opening and closing it seems to erase the setting as it always tells me that "Chromium is not your default browser, would you like to make it your default?" And I don't know why.

It keeps asking if I want to set it as default.I always press 'yes' and when I exit and open it again it asks the same question...If I say 'never ask me again' it stops, but continues after I reboot the computer..
EDIT: I also deleted Firefox

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.
The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.
Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.
Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.
I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)
Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.

I have installed, un-installed several times but just won't run! Double click on icon gives spinning wheel for a few seconds then nothing!
(PS, it did run OK a few weeks ago, but I uninstalled it because of window buttons being on wrong side Would like to try again as this has been rectified)!

For a long time now, chromium-browser just opens and eventually throws the unresponsive error message up and asks me to kill the pages or wait. None of the options work, can't even get to the preferences because that is now a page inside the browser. I have purged, reinstalled, tried manually deleting the folders, installing Google Chrome, purging, reinstalling that with no luck. Unless, I missed a location where it is still storing something, I have absolutely no idea what the problem is. I wanted to know if anyone could help with this problem.

I use Fedora 14 KDE spin, and I have a wireless network with 4 users. When I start my PC I have to enter the administrator password for the KDE wallet, and also the wireless password if I want to connect to the Internet. This is no problem for me, but I prefer not to share those passwords with the other 3 users. I selected the "Connect automatically" option in the wireless connection settings, but it still asks me for the password every time.

I obtained chromium-browser source code from sid and compiled it for Squeeze and it works but only as root which is strange. Could someone tell me why or how to make it run as user or both?
Here is the terminal output:
deniz@debian:~$ chromium-browser

I am wanting to install Chromium-browser in Squeeze. I notice that it is in the stable repos, but it seems to be fairly out of date. I was wondering how difficult it would be to install it from the unstable repos and what the consequences of that might be?

I can watch movies without problems, with the default videoplayer in ubuntu and with xbmc.but if i have a chromium web browser window open (in the background) i have about 1 frame / sec in videoplayback and no sound.the no sound problem may be related to the fact that im using sound over hdmi. i am using the nvidia proprietary drivers for my gt220.how can it be that a simple webbrwoser is slowing down videoplayback in other programs?

I got chromium to serve as my faster browser. And due to me being a huge privacy nut, I changed my settings and locked the profile by making it read only. I would like to add adblock, so I need to somehow make the profile normal again.
Heres the command I need undone:
chmod a-w -R ~/.config/chromium/Default

I have been messing around with Chromium browser. In particular, I have been attempting to set it up to open with various privacy features enabled, similar to how I have been running Iceweasel. I have sorted most of these issues out, by starting Chromium as follows: /usr/bin/chromium-browser -disk-cache-size=0 --incognito --proxy-server=127.0.0.1:3128. I have not been able to find the steps to disable or block favicons from appearing in the Chromium browser ui. I was curious if someone might know what steps are necessary to disable the favicons in Chromium browser. Alternatively, I could disable them in either of squid3 or privoxy (the two are chained on my machine), although I am not sure how to block 'favicon, gif' via either squid3 or privoxy, which should disable most, if not all, favicons in Chromium.

I've installed chromium browser package from Index of /repositories/openSUSE:/11.4:/Contrib/standard I notice that the taskbar icon has been missing (for quite some time) - I can confirm it on 3 different openSUSE 11.4 installations - on my laptop, my home HTPC/gaming rig and the worstation at work. The icon in the gnome main menu->internet->chromium looks fine but the icon I get in Compiz Ring Switcher seems to be the same white box icon with the blue bar. I'm sure it started happening since an update of Chromium in Feb/Mar timeframe. Does anyone else face similar problem and may be found a solution to get the icon fixed in the taskbar? I've attached a screenshot showing the problem.

openSuse 11.4 + Gnome 3 (upgraded from oneclick install). A couple of ago I ran zypper update and there were some updates available for chromium (and a few other things). I installed them, did some work in libreoffice (dint use chromium then) and turned the computer off. Today I needed to do some web surfing, so boot up my computer, launch chromium and get the following message (I translated it from spanish as I use the spanish version of opensuse)...
Failed to launch <<Chromium web browser>>
Failure executing child process <<chromium>> (The specified file or folder doesn't exists)
Before the "update" chromium worked perfectly. Now it doesn't even start.

I've been using Debian for a month or so now and was really happy with it. I wanted to use Chromium browser and followed the instructions on the Debian wiki [URL].... but the install deleted a load of settings, network manager etc. Is there a way I can find a log of what happened? Is there a way to reverse that or shall I just reinstall?

After finding firefox too slow, i recently shifted full time to chromium. and now i know why it has such a fan following ! its seriously fast, especially as compared to firefox - which at least in my case would appear to have got bogged down because of numerous add-ons etc.
However, there are 2 things that disturb the basic functional of chromium.
- Whenever i click on the browser icon, the window that opens up is never in "maximized" size. so every time i need to double click on the title border to maximize the window. is there some way in which the browser window will open in maximized mode the first time i click the icon ?
- Firefox wouid readily open pdf files within the browser window itself. however, chromium asks me to first save the file at some location, and then only can i open it !

I've installed chromium on Linux from a custom binary on the net. When I try to get to gmail or any other site that uses flash, chromium warns me that the version of flash that is shipped with the browser is stale and that I should be using the latest version and pointing to an adobe site.the adobe site gives me 3 options
1) yum
2) RPM
3) tar.gz
4) APT for ubuntu
since I'm on redhat, I can use either yum or RPM.Which one should I use and what is the command to install it so that chromium can use it.

I tried the Googles praised Chromium browser and while it seems to render pages fast enough and has a really nice interface, I experienced an annoying responsiveness problem. Opening a link in a background tab seems to stall the browser almost completely until the page has been loaded and rendered. For example scrolling the page that I'm currently viewing becomes almost impossible. The same actually applies to the current tab too, of course. If the page in the tab hasn't been loaded completely, scrolling is really really clumsy. I tried disabling the installed extensions and also tried experimenting with some command line options, but no help there.
