Networking :: Zenmap Intense Scan Crashes Network
May 13, 2010
I just started messing with the networking tools in Linux, and I've discovered that when I run an intense scan in zenmap on 192.168.1.1-254, the network crashes. By network crash I mean - All clients on the network lose connectivity.

This is the difference in the output of a port scan using Zenmap on the same system with UFW turned off and then with it turned on. It is obvious that UFW works.

I have installed nmap/zenmap from rpms in 11.4. Zenmap as root runs fine from the CLI, but when launched from the KDE Kickoff Application Launcher I get a message back Cannot execute command ' 'zenmap " 'which zenmap' finds zenmap in /usr/bin no problem.

I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

I ran two scans in Zenmap: 1) Quick scan plus and 2) Quick Traceroute. Quick scan plus, under the Nmap Output tab, has a field called "Network Distance". The Quick Traceroute report under the same tab lists the HOP and RTT time. I was thinking that for a given server, the value for the Network Distance would be the same as the HOP field when initiating the scans from the same server, but they are not.

I have installed a new network multifunctional device Samsung CLX-3185FN using the drivers provided by the manufacturer (Samsung Unified Driver). The printing over the network works fine, I can administer the device using browser. The only problem I have is using scanner over the network. It works fine if I disable firewall, but is blocked with firewall enabled. I can not figure out which ports or port-range I must enable for this scanner. Do you have any information on this one or how can I found out the necessary ports to open?

So whenever I turn on my EeePC with Ubuntu 10.04 on it, the network crashes after like 10 minutes to 45 minutes. Every time. Of course I have that horribly <snip> bug where the WPA and even WEP on my laptop are buggy because of 10.04, but it did the same when I was on 9.10 (but like 3-4 times a day instead of many times an hour).
Yeah, so when I connect to the network with my laptop, the network crashes. The wifi still works, I can detect the wireless network on all my computers (my Ubuntu one, Windows 7 and my girlfriend's Mac), but internet does not work. I then have to turn off router/modem, and it starts to work again. Then, a couple of minutes later, if the Ubuntu laptop is on, it stops again.
That's annoying because I can't really use my laptop on the internet because I'll have to restart everything soon. I've tried setting to WPA and to WEP and it happens with both. Same goes if I set my laptop to a manual IP address or an automatic one. I did some tests to be sure, and the network works without crashing for days if my laptop is closed, so the problem really is with Ubuntu, and as I said, it kind of always did that, but it was tolerable before.

I just did a yum upgrade from F13 to F14 to F15. According to /var/log/messages NetworkManager crashes trying to parse a VPN keyfile:
Code:
NetworkManager[2519]: ifcfg-rh: parsing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 ...
NetworkManager[2519]: ifcfg-rh: read connection 'System eth0'
NetworkManager[2519]: keyfile: parsing VPN Connection UDP ...
NetworkManager[2519]: <warn> caught signal 11. Generating backtrace ...
I'd like to remove this VPN config in hopes that NM can init and run, but I cannot figure out where this configuration is stored.

I was running F15 for a month now. After this week's updates NetworkManager crashes at startup and throws a backtrace. During reading ifcfg-<wifi network name> it was throwing some assert() failed of some hash is not null, but just as a warning. Later it was dying while reading ifcfg-eth0.
I removed all the ifcfg-* files in /etc/NetworkManager and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
Then NetworkManager started but at the moment I used the gnome applet to connect to a network it crashed trowing a backtrace (I have no debuginfo installed).
Then I also deleted ifcfg-* in /etc/sysconfig/network/profiles/default and /etc/sysconfig/network/devices, now the NetworkManager does not crash anymore, but instead gnome applet crashes when I try to connect to a network. grrr...
As a result I am still unable to connect to any network. Why so many copies (hardlinks?) to these config scripts? Now it is even worse: I rebooted the system and at the boot time when NetworkManager starts the boot process freezes. It says in VPN the Get() method is not implemented. I am unable event to switch a console and to log in to put the config files back (getty not started?).

The system will also crash when booting if it is not plugged in. However, this behaviour is not consistent. The crash is not really a crash so much as a complete system freeze, where not even the numlock light on the keyboard will turn on or off. I have to do a hard reset to get it going again. The last entry before the reboot in /var/log/messeges just shows eth0 link going down.

For about 15 minutes or so after login on my FreeBSD 8.1 (yes, I know its not Linux) the hard drive goes absolutely crazy with activity. So much so that it takes a while for the ls command to read the contents of the directory. But after the 15 minutes or so the disk activity calms down and returns to normal.
Im thinking it is some sort of fsck command, but I am unsure where or how to disable it. The hard drive is connected via sata to the mobo. Im not quite sure what other info I can post to find out what is going on. Just tell me what other info is needed and Ill post it up.

I have a Mandriva linux box connected by cable to my router. When I stream audio using this box it crashes all the wireless computers on my network. There is no effect on wired computers. All but the one computer are windows (xp or vista). The affected wireless computers are not able to even find my wireless network. I have to reboot the router to get them online.

I tried to decipher the info on the opensuse site about networked scanners but it's not clear to me and I don't see anything in the forum here that addresses the question, so here goes. My PC is an opensuse 11.3 box. My Epson CX9400 is attached to a Windows 7 PC at the other end of the house.
The PC's can talk and can access shared files nicely. It will print perfectly from the Windows box or the Linux box. It will scan perfectly from the Windows box. BUT I cannot scan documents from the Linux box. Have installed XSane and Image! Scan for Linux and neither one seem to find the scanner. I tried adding it manually in YaST and it doesn't seem to find it either.

I have a Lexmark interpret S405 all in one. I got it to work as a wireless printer with the downloads provided by Lexmark. I installed simple-scan (sane) to enable scanning. Simple scan works, since it sees another all in one printer in our house and is able to scan. In addition, simple-scan does work on the Lexmark when I hook it up with a USB cable. HOWEVER, for some reason simple-scan does not see my Lexmark, despite the fact that it is seen as a wireless printer. So, the following discrepancy is present
a) My Lexmark is recognized by my computer as a wireless printer
b) Simple-scan does work, since it recognizes and scans another all in one and it does work with my Lexmark when connected with a USB cable
c) Nevertheless Simple-scan does not recognize my Lexmark all in one wirelessly.
My question to this distinguished form is: How can I make simple-scan recognize my Lexmark wireleslsy?
