Feb 6, 2010
I have got a Laptop running Arch Linux and a Macbook. I have got a wireless network via my broadband router and get acccess both laptops remotely via ssh and sftp.I have been trying to set up NFS on both laptops with th intention of backing up one laptop to the other. I have installed the necessary file on both the laptops and have also set up the exports file as per instructions on the Arch Linux wiki.

I have two network cards in my computer (Debian). One (eth0) is connected to the router which is connected to the internet, the other one (eth1) is connected to my laptop (Gentoo). Now I want to surf the web both on my computer and on my laptop. I obeyed some tutorials "Linux as router":
1. On my Debian system IP-Forwarding is on:
Code:
takada:/home/sam# sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
2. Laptop has IP 192.168.0.2 and this is the output of 'cat /etc/network/interfaces' on my computer:
Code:
takada:/etc/network# cat interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
But a ping from my laptop to 192.168.1.1 (router to internet) still gives:
Code:
connect: Network is unreachable

have Unix and Windows experience. So will need some hand-holding.Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop. Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth

I would like to know your opinion on a Linux distribution that works best on a MacBook Pro. I tried Ubuntu 11 but I couldn't get wifi to work, all the keyboard shortcuts were jumbled up, and the even the trackpad was working horribly.

I purchased a macbook (for cheap) without a hard drive and decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10 on my new drive.
This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.
I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.

I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.

I bought my MacBook Pro at the beginning of the school year when I went to college. I am now living in a dorm where I do not have access to wired internet connection, so I cannot just plug my computer in to download stuff. If need be I can of course borrow someone else's computer to download something and then just transfer it over with a flash drive.
Anyway, I have a virtually new MacBook Pro that I bought in August. Using refit I have dual-booted OS X and Ubuntu (obviously I am posting this from within OS X) but I cannot manage to get connected wirelessly to the internet. I have tried this many many times with many many distros and have never once been able to connect. I understand that there are various tutorials around but none of them seem to help me at all and I really want this to work. I've been looking around and trying things for about two days now. Can someone give me step by step instructions (or point me toward some simple ones) starting, if need be, from a fresh install as to how to get wifi working on my macbook pro? I am also completely willing to switch versions of Ubuntu if that would help.
Ubuntu 10.10
Hardware-
MacBook Pro 7,1
Intel Core 2 Duo
Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8D)
Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 5.100.198.11 )

I have got a wireless network in my house with a router as the hub and my Linux Laptop and Macbook connecting to it. I have got a wireless Kodak printer which the Macbook uses, but they do not have any drivers for Linux. I have enabled ssh for both the laptops and have enabled "Print sharing" on the Macbook. Can I access the printer from the Linux laptop via the Macbook? When I have sshed to the macbook, the kodak printer comes up in the list of printers to choose from...but the printing job just goes to the queue, but does not actually complete. Is this because I have not got the drivers for the linux laptop?

I cannot connect to my Ubuntu Server. Currently I'm trying via my MacBook through ethernet. A physical connection is apparent; however, the computers cannot communicate. To resolve this problem is important because I just need basic SSH functionality. While connected through ethernet, my MacBook cannot ping my Ubuntu box. Here is a screen shot of the Mac's network setup, a ping attempt, the ifconfig's of both machines.

I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I've been trying to create file sharing between my MacBook Pro and my Lucid Lynx box for time machine backups and media server purposes. I followed this guide:[URL]..Everything seems to work with these exceptions: I can see my LucidLynx box in my finder app in my Mac but only when I run these commands from Ubuntu:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/netatalk restart
sudo restart avahi-daemon
If I restart my LucidLynx box then I can't see anything in finder. I can't log into my LucidLynx box from finder. I don't get a bad username or password error it just tells me the connection failed. *Note if I do enter an incorrect username or password it WILL tell me it's incorrect. I've looked at this link below since some people have used it in theses forums but it's a bit dated[URL]..

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet.Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result. What did I do wrong? Did I forget to configure something?

I have a client in Pittsburgh that has a Mac server and a Linux (RHEL) server on a LAN. They have a Netgear FVS 318v3 router on which they had a VPN running. They could do this because they had the router configured for IP-SEC and they only had Mac laptops as clients. I'm told Mac laptops can be configured to connect to IP-SEC VPNs, but Linux (I have Ubuntu) clients cannot.
I'm told that we need an PPTP VPN, and that the Netgear can not act as an endpoint, but can pass PPTP traffic to one of the servers if we set them up as a PPTP server.
We hired two different network consultants to set up the VPN, but neither one is able to set up a VPN to allow both the Mac and Linux laptops to connect.
Why is this so difficult? Lots of companies have VPNs that allow any client to connect.
Would it be better for us to purchase a different router that can act as a PPTP endpoint?
Do I want the router to act as a PPTP endpoint, or would it be better for me to use the Netgear and set up a PPTP service on one of the servers? Or, is there some better solution?

I wonder if someone could please direct me to a really simple guide to adding a Linux Mint 10 PC to a Windows XP home network that gives clear instructions for the actions to be carried out in both Linux and Windows XP? The Linux box is connected to the router by ethernet cable. I have tried the Samba Setup Guide [URL] but it ends cryptically with "Now you need to setup your Windows PC for domain logins" and none of the IT folk I have asked at work know what that means.

I'm trying to set up a mini grid of linux boxes, but am quite new to setting linux up.I've installed fedora 13 on one and would like to be able to SSH in to it. All boxes are within a university network (under a proxy if that makes any difference?).I can mount a shared disc easily enough, and SSH out to other computers (that I didn't set up myself),I've tried following a few threads, temporarily taking down firewalls, disabling SELinux, messing around with iptables but can't seem to manage it.
