SUSE :: /etc/passwd Permissions Keep Resetting To 600?

Mar 25, 2010

/etc/passwd permissions keep getting reset to 600. When I set it to 644 as su, it eventually changes back.This occurs on my openSuse10.2 machine but not the openSuse 11.1 machine, but I assume that is irrelevant. Is there something that got tweaked that I need to change in Yast to stop this from happening?

General :: Permissions - Would Map The Owner Id Of Files Coming From Other Computers To The Account Name In /etc/passwd?

Feb 8, 2010

When I use ls -al to show files downloaded from internet,

-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 7544 Jul 20 2006 INSTALL
-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 4229 Dec 9 15:36 Makefile.am
-rw-rw-r-- 1 427 6011 27893 Dec 10 17:47 Makefile.in

I can see the owner and group ids are shown because there are no corresponding entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group respectively. I don't know much about linux and dare not to edit these files, I wonder if somebody already knows whether linux would map the owner id of files coming from other computers to the account name in /etc/passwd and display them when necessary (for example, when using ls -al)?

SUSE / Novell :: FSCK Failed Error After Resetting Root Password

Jun 9, 2009

We have a server for which the root password had been lost, and there were no other user accounts set up. Yesterday evening I attempted to reset the root password by booting from the install CD and using VI to clear the root password in the passwd and shadow files. I then rebooted, and the system has halted with an 'FSCK failed. Please repair manually and reboot' error, with a prompt to 'Enter root password' below. But of course the root password isn't known (I had expected it to blank after editing the passwd and shadow files, but it doesn't work), so I have no way of logging on.

SUSE :: No Permissions To The Filesystem?

Sep 27, 2010

I'm having a chain of problems, one coming faster than the last. Finally, when things started to brighten up - this happened:Booting into OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit results in an error where a terminal crops up and attemps to load the kernel, however, it seemingly doesn't have permission to do anything other than load the actual kernel. It can't read the login info so none of it works, and during boot 203 warnings but 0 errors are generated, complaining about the inability to read, or write, files.The booting is customized, because the partition table is gone.Little bit of history lesson behind what happened here:I always used Ubuntu and Windows. Ubuntu was my primary OS and Windows was the secondary. Now, Ubuntu did what it usually does which is to **** up hardcore and suddenly not only suggest, but on its own complete, a partial OS upgrade, removing the kernel and various other nasties.

Recovery mode and older kernels still work, but I got so unbelieveably tired of that bothersome crap I decided I'd do away with Debian and switch to RPM in the hopes that it wouldn't do that. I also wanted to try KDE, and since Kubuntu is... well, an abomination that shouldn't have existed in the first place, I decided to give OpenSUSE a go.I try to shrink my Windows partition, but it's impossible. Some kind of important system file has been located at the very end of the partition and it resolutely refuses to move. To fix this, I get EASEUS Partition Master to shrink it. This works, but it also corrupts/deletes the Partition Table so that ONLY EASEUS Partition Manager can now read it - not even Windows' built-in partition manager works anymore. In order to solve it, I can pay $55 for another program called EASEUS Partition Table Recovery Tool.Haha, yjeah - not gonna happen.

However I don't really notice this until I plop my OpenSUSE 11.3 DVD into the computer and start installing, and notice the complaint from YaST2 that it can't give me a decent suggestion because it can't figure out what the hell's on the drive. Manual specification still works, however, and I manage to install it, only to have YaST2 complain at the end yet again that it was unable to install GRUB. Rebooting throws me directly into a command prompt.So I spend days figuring out how to work it with GRUB and finally figure out how to find the UUID's manually and specify a GRUB2 setup that I then manage to chainboot Windows 7 and boot into both Ubuntu and SUSE.All of it works fine, except SUSE, which has this quite horrific permissions problem, despite SUSE being the root of the file system and Ubuntu being mounted inside a home directory of the SUSE partition (incase that has any effect) - although the two user accounts have the same names and passwords.

SUSE :: Mount - Fstab - Permissions ?

Sep 25, 2009

On my Suse 11.1 computer, I'm only able to run 'mount' as root, but this screws up the permissions somehow, in that my external drives are now read only when I am normal user. I can plug my external drives to my mac osx laptop via usb or firewire, and I can read,write, and execute. As su, I can mount the drives using usb on my suse computer, but only as read only.

Optimally, I want to edit the fstab file to auto mount these external drives, and then have samba run to make the drives available (i.e. rw) on laptop.

NOTE:
1. I created the file systems on a laptop (mac osx) which has different user name than my suse 11.1 computer.

2. I tried to use chown to manually force user:group to be Mike:users instead of root:root, but the external drives still are 'read only.' Trying different options in column 4 fstab file kept giving same trouble, but I can now get user:group = 99: 99 (not sure what that means).

Red Hat :: Resetting RHEL 5 WS Rpm Database?

I do not fiddle around with installing new things on this system or perform strange configurations.

A little over a week ago, I started encountering packages in conflict. I entered a RHEL help desk ticket that has been open for over a week. The person assigned the ticket is trying to clear one error at a time.

Once I remove the package in conflict, I get pending transactions; follow the instructions to clear those; and then get more conflicts. I'd like to reset everything without re-installing.

Fedora :: Screen Brightness Resetting Itself

May 23, 2010

My issue is like this: I have a laptop (dell vostro 1400, NVidia 8400M video card) running Fedora 12 up to date. My desktop is KDE 4. I usually run the laptop connected to the power outlet, so my power profile is set to "performance". This power profile sets the screen brightness to the maximum. However, when I'm in the dark, I want to lower the screen brightness. The shortcut keys work, and the screen brightness is lowered. However, for some reason, after about 30 seconds it resets itself to the highest brightness setting. No matter how I set the brightness, it will always reset itself. Any ideas what can i do to correct this?

Software :: Resetting A Serial Port ?

Mar 23, 2009

I communication with different subsystems using serial port. In some subsystems after running for a while, I start getting invalid data inspite of system sending correct data. For dealing with this situation I used to
reset serial ports by closing and reopening serial port, it was doing the trick but somehow when I have implemented this in my new application, this also doesn't work.

void CPort::

The ClosePort function invokes close system call.

some other way to reset serial port in Linux? I am using RHEL 4, C++ and Qt 4.2.1 for my application development. Also I have used multithreading to implement each subsystem in a separate thread. Its strange that if A,B,C are three threads, A & B run fine together but when C is introduced B starts receiving invalid data after sometime and never recovers even after resetting the port as mentioned above.

Software :: Resetting Windows Passwords

I am tasked with resetting a user's password on a Windows Vista workstation. I am familiar with the chntpw utility, and I went through the motions of using Knoppix 5.1 as my live os, and downloading the aforementioned utility from the Debian website. Unfortunately, I ran into issues with glibc, and was unable to run the chntpw application. I went through the motions of booting with Knoppix 6.2, but I could not readily find the utilties that were available on the earlier version of the distribution.

Does anyone know of a latter day version of Knoppix, or any live distribution, that has utilities for mounting Windows partitions in read/write mode, and can utilize the chntpw utility to reset the password?

Slackware :: KDE Cursor Keeps Resetting To Classic

Jun 28, 2010

Yesterday, my mouse cursor in KDE/Qt apps suddenly changed. I always had the 'classic' theme set in systemsettings, and that resulted in a standard pointy arrow cursor. Yesterday, however, as soon as i logged on I had a weird 'triangle with a circle cut out' cursor. In systemsettings, it says this is "KDE Classic Cursor", 'the default cursor for KDE2 and KDE3'. I personally find it rather horrid, so I changed it. However, When I exit X and log back in, the 'classic' cursor is back. No matter which alternative cursor I choose, it only lasts for that session, although the cursor I actually selected is shown highlichted in systemsettings... I have tried deleting my .kde to no avail.

The only change I made before this started happening was adding a line to my .xinitrc to enable a menu called 'yeahlauch' which is part of yeahwm (Although I use xmonad as a WM and no desktop environment, so these cursor troubles happen only in KDE/Qt apps). EDIT: I have tried commenting out the new line and the problem persists.

Problem: permissions for rsync and BackinTime. Setup: Ubuntu 11.04, Two internal HD, #1=main, single boot, #2=backup drive. Question: How do I set up my 2nd HD with correct permissions? Background: I had previously a dual boot XP+10.04 with a 2nd HD formatted as NTFS. With this I was able to use my rsync and backintime to my 2nd HD with no issue. My new set up is EXT4 on both HD.

(I even tried to reformat my 2nd HD as NTFS, but that didnt fix the issue) I followed [URL] to mount the 2nd HD and get permissions. But now when I run backintime i get this error: [E] Error: rsync: opendir "/home/myhome/.ssh" failed: Permission denied (13) I did my requisite reading for a newbie, and am stuck.
