View 1 RepliesStart>Run>\192.168.0.1storage gives me "The specified network password is not correct." It lists my domain as "ANTEC" which is the name of my computer, though I've changed the workgroup to WELLS. I've run:
setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on
Trying to connect to samba locally gives me this:
Code:

I just realized that the "Documents" folder in my home directory has changed to a file which is a link to the /home/user/Documents and it is unaccessible. It does not (no longer) show in the "file browser" when I try to click it from "places" it says:
Error: Could not open location 'file:///home/user/Documents' No application is registered as handling this file When I list from the terminal (i.e. %ls -ltr ) it list the file (which was suppose to be the directory) as
lrwxrwxrwx 1 user user 24 2010-11-01 18:20 Documents -> /home/user/Documents
NB. user in this case is my user name on the system, I am just using user for this forum. how to retrieve the information from the folder and remove the linked file to remain with the original folder
My smb.conf is given below
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = PIRATEBAY
wins support = yes
server string = %h server (Samba %v)
[code]...
Though others could easily access my shares in a passwordless way, I am being aksed for password when I try to access their shares. They are running windows machines. I could easily access their shres without password from my windows setup.
I am trying to configure samba server on my linux RHEL 5 box to windows 2000 NT boxes but getting the following error

First let me say that Lubuntu is a lightweight version of Ubuntu, so there is not much point in loading it up with unnecessary packages. If you just want to share printers on a Linux network, you don't need Samba. And if you just want a way that users can "push" files to others on a network, use Giver (+ Avahi) as this is a better option. Especially as it sorts out file permissions for you.
To enable file sharing on a Lubuntu 10.10 machine, go to Preferences > Synaptic Package Manager and add the following:-
* samba
* system-config-samba
* gvfs-bin
* gvfs-backends
...accepting any dependancies, 11 packages in total.
I suggest you re-boot now. As an initial test, go to file manager (pcmanfm) and enter:-
smb://localhost
You should see the local print$ folder listed.
To access folder shares remotely
* open file manager (pcmanfm)
* enter the IP address or computer name of the machine you wish to access
e.g. smb://192.168.0.99 or smb://print-server
To share a folder:-
Go to: Preferences > Samba (enter password when requested)
In the Samba Configuration screen:-
* File > Add Share
* use Browse... to select folder to be shared
* Tick "Visible" and (if required} "Writable"
* In the "Access" select "Allow access to everyone"
Set the Linux permissions:-
* locate the folder to share in file manager
* right click on the folder and select Properties > Permissions
* set the required permissions, e.g. Other: Read & Write (to allow anyone full access)
I am trying to share a USB external Hdrive from my ubuntu install to my windows systems (win 7 and 1 win xp) Everything seams to be working.. as in I can see the computer in "network" from windows explorer.... The problem is no matter what I do I can not seam to browse onto it or even type in direct share locations....
EG: //Zbox/HDMedia
or just browse through the Zbox computer icon that appears in my "Network" window in explorer. I have "sudo chmod 0777 /media/HDMovies"I can see it in the win7 Network window.. I assume it is some setting for security...I am on a home network and not very security conscious. I just want it to work.
I had some troubles on samba, so I re-installed it.After I uninstalled samba, I noticed old /etc/samba folder/ files were left, so I deleted all of them. Then I installed samba, however, no /etc/samba files were installed.How can I generate default samba configuration files??
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf
[Code]....
The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.
log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html
The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.
When I right click on a free area of the desktop or within an open folder, I read "Create Document" -> "no templates installed" and "Empty File". How to install the templates in there so I could open a file of my choice?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old scanner script that uses pamthreshold to create a small greyscale image of a text document. This program does not seem to be available in debian. Can anyone tell me how I can install it, or if there are any better alternatives available?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.
how to get xsane to scan a document and have it display as a full 8.5x11 sized document instead of something half that size? I've been trying and trying and can't seem to figure it out.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have four server :
- the first of them is the router (firewall, htb, squid, etc.)
- the second have installed apache2
- the third sql
- and the last one is LTSP server for 40 client.
When the ThinClient connect to the LTSP server ewerything works good, but i can't see all of them on squid access log. Isee one ip address (LTSP server), but i want to see 40 ip adrresses. The same situation is in htb. It's doesn't work on the thin client. Is there any way to get this work that how i want ?
How to verify that Debian is running at 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps? I can view the report from 'ifconfig eth0' but I can't see how fast the link has been established.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently set up a Debian-based gateway+router on a remote site. I've installed OpenVPN and made a VPN bridge to another network (that server is also Debian). The main network has all the resources and also a VoIP server (asterisk). Bridge seems to work fine, except that every time a Linksys phone is used to call - after a few seconds I get:
Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817695] eth0: link down
Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817939] br0: port 1(eth0) entering disabled state
Jul 20 12:16:07 sklad kernel: [403990.113701] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x4DE1
[Code]....
So whenever the phone is used, network falls down for a few seconds. And of course this breaks the call. There is also another Linksys box (analog-to-voip) and it works fine most of the time. However sometimes this "eth0 link down" happens too. There is nothing more in syslog to analyze, so I don't know where to dig. Physical device of eth0 is D-link DFE520.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!
I have update my linux server from mandriva 9 to mandriva 2010
I was working using samba 2.2.8 and now I have samba 3.5.3.I have transfer all passwd and smbpasswd to new linux.I have convert smbpasswd to tdbsam
when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..
I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I had set up as a NT4 style PDC. There is no longer any PDC/BDC dynamic with Samba4 and MS AD support.
I purged samba packages and winbind et al and provisioned the domain correctly, and everything works well now.
What follows is the original post.
==========================================================================================
After much struggling with DNS settings, I finally got a basic samba AD controller up and running, and then that's about as far as I got.
As soon as I tried to use the RSAT I found that I could not connect RSAT to the AD server while logged in as root.
The error I get is:
Naming information cannot be located because: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Contact your system adminsiotrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online.
I am trying to link my desktop "Karmic" up to an XP laptop "homegroup" for file sharing. Both computers are on my wifi served by a router. The following plugins were installed via Synaptics:
[Code]...
Initially clicking on "samba" brings this up: "warning: some lines couldn't be understood while reading the configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf. these may be unknown configuration directives samba plugins but could also be configuration errors." You ignore the warning and continue on. The results are a static "samba server menu" accepting what you type ...but doing nothing with it upon pressing OK.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn the ordering of files I keep I need links to directories. Sometimes I even need to move directories to new locations. I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?
- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?
- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?
- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?
I'm running sid, reasonably updated. I decided to add a samba share. I installed samba (2:3.4.8~dfsg-2), samba-tools, smbclient, smbfs, & samba-client. I did a "/etc/init.d/samba start" and even rebooted. But when I try to add a samba password for my regular user I can't.
# smbpasswd -a praxis
bash: smbpasswd: command not found
I did a "locate smbpasswd" but I'm only seeing:

I get the following errors when installing samba.

I'm using Xfce 4.8, which now provides built-in samba browing in thunar. This works like a charm. I can browse a samba share (external HD connecter to router via USB). Yet it appears to me now that the support is limited to thunar. I mean double clicking on a file allows me to open/edit that file if and only if the software itself has samba support. In practice, double-clicking on a movie opens it with vlc thanks to vlc's own smb support. Even then, I can't find a way to add the subtitle file. I reckon that to use the share transparently, I would need to mount it the "mount" way. Either on a mount point like /mnt/hard_drive or something like .gvfs/hard_drive.
Is my understanding correct ? Is that my only option? Considering the disk won't be switched on at startup, fstab is not the solution. Would gigolo be the right choice? I spent some time trying gigolo a few days ago, following an easy tuto found on the web and it didn't work as expected. If needed I could give it another try.
