Networking :: Broad Networking - Video - VOIP And Backups

Jun 12, 2009

My home networking consists of a slackware box, running iptables with a dual NIC. That's the firewall. I have a Netgear FSM 7352S, which is a level 3 switch, which I am currently just using as a switch. Clients are numerous PCs and a couple of networked printers.

The "firewall" machine is also a file server.

Here are the issues I could use some pointers on:

I'd like to assure that the VOIP adapters get priority, assuring QOS, particularly voice quality.

I'd like to provide reasonable priority for video streaming, such as hulu and other sources, that the kids use.

I'd like bulk data transfers (like backing up partitions) to the file server that runs iptables, and acts as the firewall/gateway for a cable internet connection. It would be good to be able to do this without impacting VOIP and video streaming.

Ubuntu Networking :: Replace Broad Wireless Card

Aug 22, 2010

I have been using Broadcam Wi-Fi cards for years and always have problems getting them to work well with Linux. Not too long ago ( 6 months) I replaced my broadcom card with an Intel Pro/Wireless 4965 card. Wi-fi is 1000% better now. Connects very well and well connect to systems that I could not ever see before. So I said get an Intel card and toss your Broadcom card away and start demanding that your next computer have an Intel card as these cards have native support in the Linux kernel.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Mobile Broad Band Using Terminal?

Oct 4, 2010

is there a command (set of) which i could use to connect my USB modem while in recovery mode?

what happened?

well, i tried installing Drivers for my ATI VGA and then uninstaled them (in order to install the edgers drivers). soon after the reboot i found out my key board n mouse is not recognized in GUI.

i found a little work around here

Quote:

That means that you do have keyboard in that mode & there are no seriously misconfigured packages. It's the 'netroot' menu selection & don't use 'sudo' in that mode as you are in a root shell. And while there, ensure that you have established a connection (ping [URL]), and then:

# ping ubuntu.com
[if this works, then proceed with the rest]
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install -f

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting A Modem Router With A Mobile Broad Band Umts Connection?

Feb 17, 2011

sometimes our ADSL connection gives up and we are left without internet connection for days until the problem gets fixed. I mean by this problem along the phone line. It affects all machines that connect to the internet through a Netgear WIFI Modem Router. I recently tried an alternative when this happens is to use a USB Huawei Mobile Broadband UMTS connection which works when you insert it in 1 laptop. Is there a way i could get the Netgear WIFI modem router to connect on that usb stick or PC that is online on that usb stick and give access to other machines that will want to connect to the web ?

Networking :: Squid ACL For NAT And VoIP Sites

Jul 16, 2011

I just setup a linux machine that act as a gateway along with squid running in transparent mode. Now I have one asterisk server which is behind that gateway I mean on my local subnet which pass through my linux gateway. Voip server having 4mb up n 4 mb down limit. Clients having 512kbps and upload 2mb.

Linux gateway : controlling band width of each clients
Squid acl forNAT issue with voip sites

Now my question is regarding skype calling. Since skype uses port 80, does it mean that it passes its request via proxy or direct and for safe side I've changed skype incoming port to 443 which squid does not see it. How much and width does skype use for calling in that case. Some one told me that it using squid to pass its request which I don't agree.

Networking :: LAN Must Use ISP 2 To Go To Internet And VOiP Server Must Use ISP1?

Nov 8, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 server gateway:

Code:

But there is problem: packets from DMZ network are not natting or may be something else wrong. Also my routing table:

Code:

# route -n

Ubuntu Networking :: Capture Voip Data For Skype?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm using tcpdump and tcptrace to track all incoming and outgoing data packets through my network interfaces. But I fail to monitor the voip data for skype that way, although it works well with http port 80, for example.

I want to track the ip address of the data packets for skype, i.e. know the ip address of the other one speaking at the other end of skype. How can I achieve this?

I've checked the port setting in my skype and I'm sure I'm listening on the right port. But nothing is showing up while I'm in connection with skype.

Ubuntu Networking :: VoIP On Livebox - Connection Timing Out

Jul 17, 2011

I have a complex network. ADSL broadband comes into the house and connects to an Orange Livebox. An Ethernet cable then connects the Livebox to a more powerful router, a DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn. The reason for this is that the Livebox has a second line capability using Voip, but it is not powerful enough to get around my stone house. The DrayTek router has Voip capability, but as yet Orange will not connect the Voip line to it. I connect to this system with Ubuntu. Android, Windows and I-phone. I can connect to either of the routers, though I usually use the DrayTek.

Voip on the Livebox does not require a computer to run it, you just plug a normal phone into it and use it to get free calls. I actually take this line into a Panasonic telephone switch to give me a 2 line system around the house. The problem with this set-up is that after a short time something happens to the network which prevents Ubuntu computers connecting to it. Windows machines, I-phones and Android phones connect, but Ubuntu does not. If I re-boot the Livebox, or in an extreme case take it back to it's factory settings, the Ubuntu machines can connect again, but it's only temporary.

The fact that fixing Livebox sorts the problem definitely points to Ubuntu being innocent, but at the moment I can't do without the Livebox. That means, for the moment, having to stay with Windows. If I post the output log after a failed connection attempt, all it would show is the connection timing out. Why is Ubuntu so sensitive to network problems that are not of it's making. Is there anything I can do about it other than changing my ISP. I am considering that, but other factors make that difficult.

Networking :: Iptables Script Is Blocking Voip Asterisk?

Jun 5, 2010

I have two asterisk servers each one behind a linux firewall/gw. Linux is Centos 5.4, kernel 2.6.18-164.el5, iptables v1.3.5. Routes on the fws are ok and when iptables is stoped the servers are see each other, all good. But when I run iptables script in any fw, one server (not always the same) goes unreachable. I verify this with asterisk -r, then show sip trunk, and status becomes UNREACHABLE.

Iptables scripts is generated by fwbuilder. The weird part is I put only one rule to de script and it looks like Source=any, Destination=any, Service=any, Interface=any, Direction (Inbound,Outbound)=any, Time=Any, Action=ACCEPT. So as you can see I tried something like "Do not do anything at all". But anyway I run the script in any fw and one server becomes UNREACHABLE. I think the script does something wrong after all or maybe I have some missconfiguration in my asterisk conf files. The point is I am not so expert in iptables or shell scripting so I can't see anything in the iptables script. I have look for some issues like iptables blocking because of ip_conntrack table full, or "dont fragment" bit set in kernel problem, but nothing seems to be the right problem at all.

Networking :: VoIP And Opening Ports With Recommended Settings

Nov 7, 2009

I have recently bought a IP/PABX system with one FXO and one FXS port. I intend to install this on a remote site with a public but dynamic IP (can be resolved via dyndns though) and make calls via clients that are NATTed (inside a home router). I would like to seek advice on the port opening and the recommended settings. I have been reading a lot on VOIP and I am getting feedback that SIP calls are difficult to establish on a NATTed environment.

1.) SIP port 5060 UDP?
2.) RTP ports - what range should I open for this? I see some use 10000-20000 UDP
3.) STUN server - Is this something that needs to be configured?

How can I ensure that the other party can hear the audio just like a regular telephone? Is it really impossible to do if the client is behind a router in which it is using a Private IP Address? What other network configurations needs to be done?

Networking :: Amanda Versus Bacula For Historical Backups

Jun 8, 2010

I have a client that is using a windows based backup system called Retrospect and will be installing Linux to replace his windows server. Right now the way it works is on the XP pro workstation Norton 360 makes a backup to the server and then Retrospect make it backups every night. I want to add a linux based backup system that will give them a historical backup system that had XP pro client software that can backup open files and such I can do away with the Norton backup stuff and streamline this setup. I need it to have the capability to go back in time to restore something of an older date this historical. I was looking into:

I have never used either one and was wondering what the linux community wold recommend between the two or if there is something better that has client software and free and does it have a GUI for my clients? I am leaning toward AMANDA after reading Jeremy's article:

and there seams to be a webadmin gui as well.

CentOS 5 :: Scheduled Unattended Backups With Alerts If The Backups Fail

Feb 3, 2011

I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.

Here's what I have planned:

machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)

uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines

I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.

Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.

General :: Rsync Incremental Backups Rather Than Full Backups?

Nov 12, 2009

How do you get Rsync to do incremental backups rather than full backups? At the moment I have a script that will create a backup folder (if it doesnt already exist) then copy the source files into the backup directory with the command

rsync $VERBOSE --exclude=$TARGET/ $EXCLUDE --exclude '/Ls-wtgl1c8/**' -rt --delete $source/ $TARGET/$source/ >> $LOG_FILE

Target is where the files will be backed up to Sources is the dir(s) to be backed up Exclude files is the list of files not to backup
log file is where the output will be saved to. At the moment it only does full backups, but I would only like to do incremental, how would this be achieved? Am I missing out an option in the Rsync that is required.

General :: Too Broad To Describe In A Subject Line

Jul 21, 2010

I dug up an old P2 machine and loaded it with 320MB of RAM and a cheap BIOS-less RAID card using a VT6421 chipset. I attached a 1TB SATA HDD to it and booted it up with the latest gentoo minimal install disk. I have installed gentoo before. The first problem I had is that the system would hang at Scanning for sata_via.... I resolved this by booting with "nosata." This brings me to my first question: Will I be able to use my drive once the OS is installed? It seems like the answer would be yes, but I wanted to make sure.

After booting with the 'nosata' option the system would hang at scanning for pata_qdi.... I resolved this by booting with 'noload=pata_qdi.' Now the system is hanging at: attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdc I have been searching but have not found anything definate on this one. One post ( i am sorry but i forget where; i was working on this for hours) suggested that the problem is caused by the age and speed of the drive. I really don't know much about these things. Can anyone confirm this? Is there a way to make it work, or do I have to replace the drive? If I replaced the drive won't the new one just slow down to accomodate the old motherboard?

Ubuntu Networking :: Playback Video Over Local FTP On Karmic

Jan 13, 2010

I recently just installed Ubuntu on this laptop and I have a issue with playing back videos on my LAN server.

Thing is, I've got another computer too where it works flawlessly so I was wondering what causes this on my laptop...

I mount the FTP location and I get access to all the files on the server. On my other computer, I can basically just click any video file and it would act as it would if it was on my HDD already, but when I try to do that on my laptop it will not play the video file at all.

I've tried several media players too, but I usually just use VLC so here is the VLC error:

Code:

And then ask if I want to repair it. However, once I drag the file over to my desktop it works.

So why won't my media players read video files over FTP?

And the whole "Connect to server" is acting a little weird. If I try to use the DNS of the server instead of the local IP I will not get any response. However, using the DNS in other applictions do work.

Long story short: one big hard drive, three CPUs to encode, need to split the work up quickly.
