It's installed as a mobile broadband connection. Only works if my phone is plugged in during boot, otherwise plugging in my phone does nothing. For example, I booted my netbook earlier today but my phone wasn't plugged in. Tethering did not work, it just acts as if it isn't present. I rebooted (with my phone still attached) and now tethering magically works.

I have installed 2 VoIP programs, skype and xten softphone (X-Lite), skype works well and no problem but on the xten softphone not so lucky, I get to hear the tone before dialing like any phone but can't receive calls and if I call, there's no sound, other side can hear me, but I can't hear a thing.
I need both, skype it's my personal account and xten softphone is for work.

I am wondering if there is free VoIP software which will allow me to make and receive calls to regular phone numbers, such as landlines or cell phones, at no additional charge.

I've bought a Conceptronics CPHONELU (C01-200) VoIP USB phone. I would like to take full advantage of my VoIP phone in Linux. Currently I'm using Sip Communicator as the softphone, but I tried x-lite 3.0 on Windows too. The phone works has like a regular headset, I can hear and speak without a problem. However I cannot take full advantage of the phone, since the phone keyboard only work in Skype through the Skype Portal software that come bundle with the phone (Windows only). Is there a driver that I can use in order to be possible to dial using the phone and display the called ID with a regular softphone?

I recently set up a Debian-based gateway+router on a remote site. I've installed OpenVPN and made a VPN bridge to another network (that server is also Debian). The main network has all the resources and also a VoIP server (asterisk). Bridge seems to work fine, except that every time a Linksys phone is used to call - after a few seconds I get:
Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817695] eth0: link down
Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817939] br0: port 1(eth0) entering disabled state
Jul 20 12:16:07 sklad kernel: [403990.113701] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x4DE1
[Code]....
So whenever the phone is used, network falls down for a few seconds. And of course this breaks the call. There is also another Linksys box (analog-to-voip) and it works fine most of the time. However sometimes this "eth0 link down" happens too. There is nothing more in syslog to analyze, so I don't know where to dig. Physical device of eth0 is D-link DFE520.

Today my boss come to me and ask me to get a cote to upgrade our old "Cisco call manager" (2004) now "Cisco Unified Communications Manager". So I was wondering, instead of doing a costly upgrade (over 35 000), maybe it's time to change... Does anyone of you got some insight with Asterisk in an enterprise environment? Is it reliable? Following you own judgement, what are the + and - ? If Asterix worth it, what argument (apart of the price) could I use to help the management turning on my side? Will the Cisco 7921 VOIP phone will be able to connect to it? (as we do have over 35 of them)
Enterprise environment:
- 3 sites (VPN interconnected)
- ~35 VOIP phones and ~10 landlines phones

I have a liveusb running Fedora 11 on my hp laptop. I would like to use my T-Mobile Dash 3G unlimited data connection. I have seen many posts regarding wvdial, modem scripts, etc that are going a little over my head. I was able to connect my phone to the laptop, but when I tried to initiate internet sharing on the phone via Bluetooth PAN, nothing happened on the computer. I was connected but not able to do anything.
I saw some developer in a blog mention that he had put Bluetooth PAN support in Fedora 12. Is this not available in F11? Should I try moving to a F12 liveusb for this?
Has anybody had success getting a Tmobile 3G to work with F11?
I would rather use the USB connection so I could charge simulteously, but this looks a lot tricker.

I am looking for a way to use my computer as a regular landline telephone not by VoIP but by actually dialing on my landline to talk. I don't know what software I need. My searches only bring up VoIP stuff leaving me stuck without answers. I am using a new installation of debian 5.0. I think that's all, if you need more details I can add them.

I have just bought a new PC with an ASUS M4A78-AM motherboard with integrated VT1708S 6-channel sound chip in it, so I freshly installed fedora 12 without any issues However, I can't get the surround sound working. I have searched many forums a lot, and haven't found any solution yet.It seems that even the SPDIF output does not work on this sound card, and that is what people talk about on almost every forum / mail list. So I was unable to find almost ANY information regarding ANALOG surround sound.
The motherboard has 3 jacks on it - green for FRONT / 2 speaker set; blue is the line in OR THE REAR-SPEAKER out, and pink is the microphone OR side speaker out in the 6-spk configuration. My speaker configuration is 4.1 [2 front, 2 back and subwoofer]. Line out does not produce any sound.I have uninstalled pulseaudio [sudo yum remove pulseaudio]Now alsamixer shows a lot of controls, but even if I unmute line out and set it to max, it is still not producing any sound.

I'm currently working for a company that requires me to have an IAX-compatible VoIP client. So far, the only one that works, and the one that was suggested to me, is Zoiper.
[URL]
I can download Zoiper classic (which runs literally as an executable) or Zoiper communicator which has a .deb, but both of them are unreliable for everyday use.
I can run Zoiper in Windows XP no problem, but I'm a programmer and I work much faster with my native workflow in Ubuntu.
I tried installing IAX libraries in Synaptic and tried to see if Empathy, Pidgin or Ekiga would pick it up, but no luck.

The only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.

trying to get everything set up in Debian lenny on my new Toshiba staellite L500. I have successfully installed the wireless drivers and graphics card and have them both up and running. But I'm having trouble with the sound card. Specifically, it appears to be installed but I cant get any sound or any devices related to sound (speakers, volume control, alsamixer) to work at all.
this is my kernel:
uname -r

and this is the result of lspci:

In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.

Is there any way get a VoIP-client with ZRTP-support for SIP, without having to add extra third party repos, ect.? Is there anything in the the Debian repo's that actually support this protocol at all?
None of the two clients I've tried so far (Linphone and SFLphone) work out of the box on Debian. Linphone doesn't work with ZRTP on Debian (bug #743474), it work an all other systems, but not for Debian. SFLphone is no longer supported, as it has gone to the project Ring, which cannot be installed without adding additional repos.

I've just loaded up Fedora 13 and I like the new feature Fedora have which allows you to use your mobile as a internet modem over bluetooth. Is it possible to update my Network Manager in ubuntu 10.04 to this new version 0.8.997 through the package manager? Is there a PPA or something I could use?
Would just updating this add the bluetooth ability or would I have to update gnome-bluetooth package as well? Is it doable at all or should I just wait till the next Ubuntu comes out?

First off I'd like to say if I hadn't put Fedora on my USB stick I'd never discovered that my old laptop had built in wifi, and it was just disabled in the BIOS. I was originally trying to get my Linksys WEC600n card to work. Once I turned on the internal wifi, and took out the linksys card, fedora picked it up right away. My problem is when I try going to websites they won't work, except for FedoraProject. (If I try to navigate to the FP forums it doesn't work either.) I'm not sure what would be the cause of this, so I have no idea where to start.
1. It had my wireless network in the list.
2. I put in my WEP key.
3. It appeared to connect fine.
4. Websites won't load.
5. ?

I am trying to make a d-link dwl-650+ pcmcia card work through ndiswrapper method following the direction at:[URl]... The first step there is to install the "kmod-ndiswrapper" via yum.
But, how would I just download this package to a usb drive so that I can transfer it to the laptop that needs wireless networking. Is there an option in yum where I can just download the package, not intstall, so that I can save it somewhere?

I am currently running 9.04 on an HP Mini 1033CL.When I first upgraded to 9.04, my sound card would not work. Finally, about 3 months ago, an update changed that. Now, I see that 9.10 is available, but I am nervous about installing it. Are there any foreseeable problems I need to know about? Keep in mind, I know little about Ubuntu and use it on my netbook (my fun computer) because it is free and I hate windows. Therefore, if there are buggy problems I have to adjust in bios or by tagging something, or whatever, I have no idea how to do it. 9.04 seems fine, so why upgrade?

My soundcard (a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music) is running with the unix-driver offered by Creative. But after a restart (without switching power off) I have to switch the sound device in xmms from ALSA to OSS. Also my tv card (an hybrid card from Hauppauge, WIN-TV HVR-1300) is only getting a signal after a restart, before there is no signal found. To get sound while watching tv I'm using one of the following lines, it seems to be random wich of them is working without error:
> sox -r 48000 -c 2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp
> sox -r 48000 -c 2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1
So it looks like a problem in loading the modules in correct order, but I'm not sure. Perhaps there is also a problem with my nvidia graphic card (see list below for the kind of card), that I have installed with the unix-drivers from nvidia's webpage. To solve this problem I'm now searching since september, when I got my new computer, including:
-graphics: Lead896 D3 X GTX260 Extreme+
-CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8500, 3166 MHz, FSB 775
-mainboard: Asus P5Q-E, P45 F G SA
