Slackware :: How To Flush Dns Cache

May 9, 2010

Slackware64 13.0 I have a website that has been migrated to a new server. After a few days I'm still pointing at the old server and the hosting company have recommended that I flush my dns cache. A quick google for this in linux seemed to recommend restarting the nscd daemon but nscd -g tells me it's not running anyway. I connect to Virginmedia via wired ethernet to a Belkin N1 router so is there a way I can do this I wonder, either via Virginmedia or Slackware?

Ubuntu Networking :: Ad-hoc Network Doesn't Survive A Reboot / Avoid Having To Bring Down And Up Interface?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).

I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.

Here is what I have in /etc/network/interfaces for the wireless interface code...

So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?

Ubuntu :: How To Avoid A Hard Reboot

May 17, 2011

on a Vimeo video in Firefox, and my computer became "partially frozen". The video stopped, but the audio continued to play to the end, but I couldn't clear the video. I pressed ctrl-f2 to switch to my other desktop, but it just brought up a blank screen, and switching back makes no difference. As it stands I have a black screen with my mouse cursor on it (I can move the cursor, yes). I'm new to linux, and I want to know if there are any keyboard shortcuts I could try to fix this. I'd rather not hard reboot whenever I run into a problem, I just don't know the terms to google for

Server :: Mysql "flush Logs" Or "flush Tables With Read Lock?

Jan 15, 2010

policy is to backup mysql with mysql-zrm.However at a certain stage it hangs forever. This is at the "flush logs". I tried this manually and it gave the same result. Even after restarting mysql and the host. After some googling and trying I found out "flush tables with read lock" gives the same result. The tables seem to be MyIsam. I tried with a mysqldump on one server and restore it on a test vm. I used the same config and flush logs still hangs. ALso I tried to change some configuration directives... but with the same result

Edit: btw, I checked the logfile and didn't found anything (/var/log/mysqld.log)

Edit2: I also did myisamchk -s *.MYI (in all direcoties with db files;actually did it with find command) and it did not return anything so datafiles seem ok.

Networking :: How To Avoid Loopbacking For UDP Socket

Aug 26, 2010

I am facing some problem with loopback on UDP sockets. is there anyway by with we could avoid loopbacking of a UDP datagram destined to same IP address, and instead force it to go all the way till NIC and then come back to the socket.

The problem is, we have some piece of code written at driver level, and we want each and every packet to hit that code on its TX and RX path. But if src and dest IPs are same, packet loops back from the IP stack itself, without hitting the driver code.

Can we modify the characteristics of a UDP socket, such that each and every packet has to go through NIC interface, thus avoiding loop backing when the src and dest IPs are same?

Software :: Redirecting APT Cache - Can Redirect Cache Of Apt To A Specified Folder Either On Command Line Or Via A Config Setting?

Jan 5, 2011

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.

Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).

I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

Debian :: How To Flush Printer Queue

Mar 16, 2011

I have an HP printer for my Lenny which has worked for some year. But I don't remember what method I used to install it. So this is one piece of the puzzle that I can't see. But like I said the printer works. One day I accidentally printed more than I had papers in the printer-machine. Then I kind of stacked a lot of print jobs in the queue out of frustration. So whenever I reboot the PC/Lenny then it waste some paper by printing things that got stuck in the printer queue. It's not very environmental this weird behavior.

So next time this happens how do I flush the Printer queue so Lenny doesn't remember what happened before the reboot? I followed these instructions earlier but it only switched one weird behavior with another weird behavior. So it didn't work for my Lenny, and I couldn't find any better solutions on the Internet. Networking :: Nfs Cache -> Don't See New File In Some Folders?

Nov 19, 2010

I'm using an embedded linux with a TX25 starterkit board. To start, this board proceeds as below :1. connect to my PC to download the kernel (using a ftp connection).2. uncompress the kernel and start it.3. connect to my pc to mount the root file system using nfs.. start the system.Everything works fine, except that I noticed there's maybe a nfs cache issue.for example, if a program run on the board creates a file in /home, I can see it from my PC (nfs server). => perfect !But if a program creates a file in /var/lib/dpkg/, I can see it from the board but not from my PC, so when I restart the board everything is lost.It seems to be a bad configuration.I tried to restart the nfs and nfslock services.here is my /etc/eports file.

Ubuntu :: Xfs Inode Flush Bugs - Threat Or Menace?

Jul 1, 2010

I was rather intrigued by the large number of xfs bug fixes in the recent kernel update for Lucid.

Code:
aptitude changelog linux-image-2.6.32-23-server | grep -c xfs:
20
20!

Poking around reveals that one Dave Chinner, Principal Engineer -- SGI Australian Software Group, submitted a series of patches to deal with preventing the flushing of stale inodes. I'm trying to figure out just how relevant those patches are to the stability of XFS, especially to pre-Lucid Ubuntu systems: are they in danger of data loss? Some quick search results thrown together in an effort to asses this issue:[URL]..Quote:

Dave Chinner (9):
xfs: Don't flush stale inodes
xfs: Ensure we force all busy extents in range to disk
xfs: reclaim inodes under a write lock
xfs: Avoid inodes in reclaim when flushing from inode cache

Networking :: Local Dns Server Cache Size Optimization

Apr 24, 2011

Does anybody have some thoughts about a local dns server cache size? What is the optimal one? In terms of memory consumption and number of re-enters into the cache. Lets say that default size is 150, so I've change this to 500 and after some time I see 379 re-enters into the cache. Simply put I need to increase the cache size 2 times. But due to the fact that browser preloads dns names it is not possible to interpret the number of overwrites in terms that it is not possible to say if useful cache entries were overwritten or those that the browser precached ( in other words not needed ). In this case it is ok to overwrite unwanted entries because it is not likely that I'll need these entries anyway

I'm running the dnsmasq on an embedded system with limited ram and with an umts dongle attached. It is important to keep the cache size as small as possible to reduce memory usage and at the same time to reduce number of external lookups because dns latency of the umts connection is high (1-2sec for the dns query)

Networking :: Ddclient Fails With Uninitialized Value When Cache File Exists?

Mar 8, 2010

When I run ddclient with an existing ddclient.cache file I get errors saying "uninitialized value" and the remote IP address does not get updated. This pretty much renders ddclient useless. If I delete the cache file then things work fine and the IP address *does* get updated (if need be). I happen to be running version 3.7.3 of ddclient but I've tried this with ddclient 3.8.0 and the result is exactly the same except that the line number in the error changes to line 2030.

Here's the code at that line number :

Code:
if ($config{$host}{'login'} eq '') {
warning("null login name specified for host %s.", $host);
I'm running ubuntu ( 9.04 I think ) and using zoneedit.com for dynamic dns.
Here's a transcript showing the problem.
root@ruby:/var/cache/ddclient# ddclient

General :: Networking - Doesn't Respond To Pings - View The Arp Cache Table?

Jan 20, 2011

I have a Slackware 13.0 server that is not replying to icmp pings. However, I have double checked that /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all is set to 0. The weird thing is I can run nc -v slackware 22 from any computer on my lan and the banner comes up just fine. The nic is on the same netmask and broadcast as all the other computers on my lan. I can log into it as well, it just doesn't respond to pings. I can even ping other computers and get replies just fine when pinging from inside the Slackware server.

I have even added an iptables INPUT rule for -p icmp -j ACCEPT. Although I've never had to do this. I ran tcpdump -vv icmp and I can see ping requests coming into the computer, however slackware simply doesn't respond. What could be causing this? A corrupt arp cache? It's been happening for more than a few hours so I wouldn't think so. How can I view the arp cache table? How do I clear it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Su As Backup User Inside Of Bash Script - Lock And Flush Tables On A Mysql Db

Jan 23, 2010

I am attempting to write a backup script that will do the following:

1) lock and flush tables on a mysql db
2) dump the db to a file
3) unlock the tables
4) rsync the file to offsite storage

It all seems to be going well. However, obviously I don't want to setup ssh to the storage server on another network as the root user without a password. so I am attempting to su as the backup user inside of the script but when I try to run the script everything happens as it should until I try to so.. then it jumps out of the script .. akss me to login as the backup user.. proceeds to rsync to the offsite storage it does all this and then resumes execiting the script. it is not going to be setup as a cron job. it will be executed manually. assuming that is the case, how can I get the script to run without prompting for a password?

Here is what I've come up with so far... assuming that the script is run as root and the identity of the backup user will need to be assumed inside the script without perstering the user to enter the backup user's password.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Networking Quit After Reboot?

Feb 27, 2010

I've had my wireless networking (on an Acer Aspire laptop) working perfectly well for at least six months. Now, quite suddenly, after a reboot I get the message from wicd, "No wireless networks found". I probably was running a week or so before that without needing a reboot. Windows wireless is fine (I'm using it to send this post). In addition, my sound stopped working and I see a fleeting message to the effect that the sound system is reverting from analog to digital.I'm running Kubuntu 9.10. My guess is that something in a recent round of updates knocked me out of the box. How can I proceed to set things aright?
