Is it possible to remove the "flush" flag when mounting removable disks in KDE4 without recompiling KDE4? Can it be done in some config file(s)? Thanks!
View 5 RepliesThrough some recent update, which one I am not sure, my system no longer responds to removable media such as flash drives and insertions of DVD/CD disks. Whereas before, for instance, if I inserted a USB flash drive, the "Device Notifier" would pop up, tell me that a new device had been detected, and ask me what I wanted to do with it, now nothing. "My Computer" (sysinfo:/)does not update either. The kernel knows the device is there, since I can see it when I do "lsusb". OpenSuSE x86_64 11.2.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just started using openSUSE 11.1 with xfce and my problem is that I cannot mount my external USBs, I get the following message:
org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result).
It seems hal does not give me permission to do this. Am I able to mount using the command line? If so, how?
Slackware64 13.0 I have a website that has been migrated to a new server. After a few days I'm still pointing at the old server and the hosting company have recommended that I flush my dns cache. A quick google for this in linux seemed to recommend restarting the nscd daemon but nscd -g tells me it's not running anyway. I connect to Virginmedia via wired ethernet to a Belkin N1 router so is there a way I can do this I wonder, either via Virginmedia or Slackware?

1. It should be mounted automatically for me. Now it isn't, though it appears in fdisk -l output: Code: Disk /dev/sdd: 8006 MB, 8006926336 bytes
16 heads, 32 sectors/track, 30544 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 512 * 512 = 262144 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x9b12d290
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 * 16 30544 7815232 b W95 FAT32 and if I mount it manually, all goes OK
2. If I mount manually my CD disk and then press the eject button on my drive nothing happens until I manually unmount the drive. But I want it to open immediately
All this worked for me in kubuntu 8.10, and broke with the upgrade.

I want to disable automounting of removable media such as anything on USB, memory cards, and even eSATA. I do want the device node to be set up, but that's it.

Actually after upgrading to 10.4 I get the message: Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.". But I don't wand this if the disk is not there that's OK for me. How would I configure fstab to achieve this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to mount a disc that was previously used in the Intel Software Matrix RAID array (fake-raid). If I try to mount it I get:
mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or tempb busy
I think my dmraid is refusing to mount it beause of some RAID "flag". I would like to get rid of it, but unfortunately I cant do that on my system (theres no such RAID):
[root@ox mnt]# dmraid -r /dev/sdd
ERROR: isw: Could not find disk /dev/sdd in the metadata
no raid disks and with names: "/dev/sdd"
There are several posts recommending to uninstall dmraid completely from the system. Isnt there smarter solution in removing such a flag?
After updating to Karmic, Synaptic shows almost all of my installed packages in the category "Installed (manual)", including about half of the packages that belong to a clean Ubuntu installation (e.g. apparmor, apt and hundreds of others). As a result, I can't easily get a list of those packages that I did indeed install manually and may want to remove. Is there a way of removing the "Installed (manual)" flag from all packages?
If I could do this, all packages that do not belong to the core Ubuntu system should show up as "Installed (auto removable)" and I could individually mark only those as manually installed that I really still need and let apt/synaptic uninstall everything else. I know that with today's hard disks, disk usage of installed packages is not an issue. But those packages accumulate over time and need to be updated with every security update and every ubuntu dist-upgrade, wasting time and bandwidth.
policy is to backup mysql with mysql-zrm.However at a certain stage it hangs forever. This is at the "flush logs". I tried this manually and it gave the same result. Even after restarting mysql and the host. After some googling and trying I found out "flush tables with read lock" gives the same result. The tables seem to be MyIsam. I tried with a mysqldump on one server and restore it on a test vm. I used the same config and flush logs still hangs. ALso I tried to change some configuration directives... but with the same result
Edit: btw, I checked the logfile and didn't found anything (/var/log/mysqld.log)
Edit2: I also did myisamchk -s *.MYI (in all direcoties with db files;actually did it with find command) and it did not return anything so datafiles seem ok.
I'm having a problem with my usb disks, on opensuse 11.2. USB disks only mount the first time after booting.
The scenario is, I boot, then I plug a usb disk. It mounts properly and I can use it. After I unmount it and unplug the disk, I try to plug it in and it doesn't mount. And none of my other usb disks will mount as well.
The only workaround is to reboot.
I checked /var/log/messages, and the disk is being detected, it's just not being mounted.
I am trying to give another user the ability to mount any hard disk by using either the Places menu or the Palimpsest disk utility. Currently whenever you try to do either of these, it immediately asks for root password, even though the logged in user has sudo priveliges to mount disks.
I have modified the sudoers file and given them access to STORAGE and other needed commands. The account CAN mount using the mount command in terminal, but I want to allow them GUI use. From my reseach it looks like Fedora is using DeviceKit but I'm not too familiar with how it works. What do I need to allow non-root users to mount disks in the GUI?
Does mounting HDD with "flush" & "sync" have any real use? For example - to protect files from losing in case of power failures.

At work I use Ubuntu and one nice thing about it is that it creates mount points for removable drives automatically.
In Slackware I can set up XFCE so that it mounts drives when they are plugged in, but only if they're already specified in the fstab (which means I must have used them and set them up in advance).
This is becoming a problem now that removable usb drives of all sorts are so common.
I use slackware 13.1 and I want to create a RAID level 5 with 3 disks. Should I use entire device or a partition? What the advantages and disadvantages of each case? If a use the entire device, should I create any partition on it or leave all space as free?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am installing slackware 13 on a machine that already has slackware 64- current. I'm doing this to try LFS which needs a 32 bit host (I know about CFLS, but I'm trying to keep it simple). My current installation is on sda with / being on sda1. My new 32 bit installation is on sdb with / being on sdb2.
I didn't install LILO as I figured it would be easy enough to just edit the current lilo.conf and run lilo after rebooting from the installation and then rebooting again into the new 32 bit install. What keeps happening is that the system boots seemingly fine, but after some wierdness I realized that it is booting a kernel from the 64 bit install on sda1. I'm assuming this is a simple screw up in my lilo.conf but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it.

I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?
I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);
dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)

I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot.The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
The error message I keep getting during mounting is:-
device-mapper: remove ioctl failed: Device or resource busy
This is from ane external USB HDD I use as a backup device. I've tried formatting it as ext4 ane encrypting it from the command line
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1
# cryptestup luksFormat /dev/sdc1
which run without errors but an attempt to mount throws up the above error as well as saying - you must specify the file type (tried that) - and fails to mount. I've tried using YaST to format and encrypt it which throws up the same error when I run mount but actually does actually mount the filesystem Googling around has brought up info saying that it's probably a race condition brought on by invalid udev rules. I've got a (mostly) working system and the udev rules documentation leaves more confused than when I started.
I am trying to listen to an audio cd but when I try to find it, either through an ikon on the desktop, (XFCE), or through a media player, -Amarok - vlc, the file manager, (Thunar), nor even ultimately the Terminal, can I find anything in the CD-rom drive when a music CD is played in it.I can easily copy the contents of the CD to my home directory using cdparanoia.When I place a CD with an ISO image or a DVD from Linux Format, for example, I have no problems opening or browsing them.I had also run alsaconf and it completed easily. But still nothing shows up, and the superblock error is still there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am newer to Slackware but not to Linux. I am having the hardest time trying to get my CDROM to mount for me so that I can play audio cd;s and the like. I can see that the system knows that my CDROM drive is there and that it works because I installed Slackware 13 from my CDROM drive as /dev/hdc. Now when I put in a cd nothing happens? I have googled away and searched this forum quite a bit before posting this but I have tried almost everything I can think of and what others have mentioned. I have screenshots to show you what I mean. When I try to run the command:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
I get it as mounting as read only and it says can't read superblock? Now that is fro my slave IDE CDROM on top as hdd. I have tried before to mount it as /dev/hdc but to no avail. I know both CD drives work just fine because I used them to install the system. I am going to put the screenshots below so maybe someone can help me! Also I can eject the top CD drive with the command code...
