Ubuntu Networking :: Want To Avoid Disaster That Happened To Kostolnik

Jul 19, 2011

According to this scary wi-fie hacking article:

A neighbor was sent to jail for 18 years for seriously hacking his neighbor:

What can we install on Ubuntu to forestall such an occurrence at home (given a WRT54G router & 1 Ubuntu computer)?

Networking :: How To Avoid Loopbacking For UDP Socket

Aug 26, 2010

I am facing some problem with loopback on UDP sockets. is there anyway by with we could avoid loopbacking of a UDP datagram destined to same IP address, and instead force it to go all the way till NIC and then come back to the socket.

The problem is, we have some piece of code written at driver level, and we want each and every packet to hit that code on its TX and RX path. But if src and dest IPs are same, packet loops back from the IP stack itself, without hitting the driver code.

Can we modify the characteristics of a UDP socket, such that each and every packet has to go through NIC interface, thus avoiding loop backing when the src and dest IPs are same?

Ubuntu :: Startup Disk Creator Disaster

Mar 14, 2010

I was attempting to create a bootable usb drive for a friend with Startup Disk Creator. I was certain I had selected the correct drive but apparently I had not, because when I clicked "format" it began to format sdb instead of sdc. Unfortunately, sdb was my external hard drive. In a panic i force quit the format window, as i couldn't see any other option.

Now, when i access my external hard drive all I see is 4 files with jibberish titles full of random symbols. When I right click the external drive it still says its ~70% full of data, so i guess everything is still there.. whether or not it is salvageable is the question. Is there anything to be done or is it beyond repair?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.10 Is Epic Disaster

Jun 28, 2010

Two days ago, I was happily using 9.10 with no problems. I decided to upgrade to 10.04 because it looked really cool and every upgrade had been at least a litte better for the past 3 years of using ubuntu. I rarely use command line. I just don't like microsoft or apple very much. I do know a little about how to do it, but i need it broken down barney style. Back to topic...

When i boot my computer, everything goes fine until the purple screen that says ubuntu with red dots under it. I expect to see my login screen next, but it just goes black and responds to nothing. I started in failsafex and things seem to work ok. I assume the graphics settings are too high at default and i need to back them off some. Nothing I do fixes the problem. can i do something about this from root?

i use a laptop with external monitor and it has worked forever. now, the system doesn't recognize it at all in failsafex. I don't know if it will work once the distro actually works, but any hints would be great. I prefer to not have to erase everything on the computer, but if it will get me running again faster it's ok.

Ubuntu :: Need To Access Stored Files After Disaster

Jan 4, 2011

I am new to Linux. I was running Ubuntu 10.04. While downloading software, one of my downloads changed changed my OS to Xubuntu. From browsing the available software, I surmised(wrongfully it turned out) that files starting were X files. In Synaptic, I deleted all files starting with X. This I found is a form of hari kari. When I boot up now, I have a choice of straight to Ubuntu or "Help" mode. If I boot up straight, I get to Ubuntu logo and it hangs up running the dots between red and green and I give a warm boot to restart. If I choose the "Help" route, I go thru what a windows user would call DOS commands or activity. At the end of whatever it is doing, it asks for user ID and password. I give it those and I am given a command line. I don't know what to do with this. I would like to access my stored files and save them. If nothing can be done to save them, I will just start over by reinstalling 10.04. BTW I am running 7.1 from an old boot disc. Is there some way that I can retrieve my files?

Ubuntu :: Full System Backup For Disaster Recovery Use In Ver. 10.4?

May 5, 2010

I want to be able to recover from a disaster by simply inserting a CD of my entire system, boot from it, and reinstall my system back to the way it was before the disaster. After much research here, I feel the need to ask this question directlybut as a new user, I find it somewhat difficult locating information.

I have seen references to all sorts of backup software. I am trying to use Simple ackup. Each time I run this utility, it gives me a process ID and then apparently vanishes. I don't see the process running in System Monitoror see anything recognizable in var/backups.Perhaps, being as new to Linux as I am, I am simply overlooking something. I must say though, that these are the friendliest user groups I have ever seen. It amazes me that so many people are so willing to post long, complicated solutions to someones problem

Ubuntu Installation :: OFTB Disaster In Getting To Install/run On Compaq 615?

Jul 13, 2010

I'm an absolute newbie to linux/Debian/Ubuntu. Problem: Ubuntu is loaded successfully but does not run - I just get a blank screen.

The machine specs:
HP Compaq 615
Processor AMD Athlon X2 DualCore QL-64
Processor speed 2100 MHz
ROM date 07/17/2009
ROM Revision 68GVV Ver F.04
Video Bios Revision : ATI 05/07/09

History: I downloaded Ubuntu, burnt a CD and it runs fine on my Saraha machine and it ran fine on the HO Compaq as well - from the CD. So I selected install. At the end of install when I had to reboot, the screen was filled with error messages I/O error on sector pages of the messages. Then downloaded the notebook version and again both laptops ran fine from CD. Installed Ubuntu (deleting everything else) and exactly the same problem.

After reading this forum posts I tried pressing F6 and got a screen with options. Selected them all, installed again - but same blank screen problem. Read this forum again - and found lots of posts with the same problem - on the same machine, but it appears no solutions. I'm at the point of walking away, but really would like to give open source a realistic try. I'm afraid to install Ubunto on any other machine as we may end up with nothing working.

OpenSUSE :: Need Disaster Backup DVD Tool

I just borked my Suse system completely. I had to reinstall it. I'm wondering if there is a program that will let me create a restore DVD or set of DVDs, so in the event of a disaster, I could just pop a DVD in, reboot, and it would prompt for the next DVD then the next, and restore everything just like an install DVD.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ad-hoc Network Doesn't Survive A Reboot / Avoid Having To Bring Down And Up Interface?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm configuring an HP Mini 110 (wireless BCM4313) to use it as a small Access Point (ad-hoc mode).

I want to make my configuration reboot friendly. With what I have right now, as soon as I reboot the laptop, the wireless interface configuration isn't correctly setup. I have to do "ifdown eth1; ifup eth1" manually.

Here is what I have in /etc/network/interfaces for the wireless interface code...

So the question is how can I avoid having to bring down and up the interface?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unmitigated Disaster - Logitech Cordless Keyboard Is Not Working

Jun 28, 2011

I have been a keen user of Ubuntu since version 7.something. In that time I have updated, upgraded, or done clean installs of each new versions usually about 2 months after the release to enable small bugs to iron out. There have always been minor issues usually easily rectified via this forum. However the 11.04 release is the worst I have ever come across almost forcing me back to winblows. So what is my gripe. -- 7 hours downloading and upgrading -- to obtain a system that does nothing -- nada. zip. it booted came to the desktop and nothing, Unity doesn't respond, no applications open, and the shutdown didn't work.

So -- downloaded the ISO this morning did a clean install and eagerly went into my new system. First issue -- my logitech cordless keyboard is not working, never had an issue before. so plug in a USB one, which is what I am using now. Go to the 'system settings' (took me a while to find where they had gone) but couldn't find anything in the keyboard section to allow me to configure a cordless keyboard. Failure 1

Open banshee and ask it to load the music library. It does, then click for a file to play and --- no sound! so choose another track just in case and banshee crashes, and the icon disappears from the unity bar. Failure 2 As usual I have an Nvidea graphics card so one of the first things is to install the proprietary driver. Never had an issue before. this time it loaded (apparently) and then I do the restart to enable it, and when I get back in there is no top bar, the Unity bar sits there and won't slide in and out, and no applications will respond. BIG failure 3

Re boot into recovery mode and opt for safe graphics mode. System re boots - Top bar now appears, Unity remains inoperative, and when I click the shutdown icon to get to system settings --- crash and burn system shuts down.-- BIG failure 4 Re boot into recovery mode (again) run "fix broken packages" DPKG runs for a while replacing and upgrading hundreds of packages. When finished reboot -- same issue desktop stuffed! Currently working off the live CD. To the developers -- maybe you are pushing ahead too quickly now. this sort of overall failure will lose more users than gain. I don't usually complain but as my title says for me Natty is an unmitigated disaster.

Ubuntu :: What Happened To Enhanced Desktop Effects

Jul 28, 2011

I've read a few threads, but I'm not sure that I have found the answer. I have a Dell E4310 laptop (company issued). It comes with the Intel HD Grpahics chipset. I've read people giving it great reviews so I am hopeful.I am running Natty. My first mystery was "what happened to the enhanced desktop effects", but I found a post saying they were removed in 11.04 -- apparently they just work if your video supports it. I've installed all the compiz packages including the enhancements. I am able to go into the Compiz Settings Manager and see all the modules. I am able to turn them on and off and change the settings, but anytime I try to use any of the keyboard shortcuts nothing happens.

I'm still relatively new to the world of Linux. Can someone tell me how I figure out whether or not my graphics card can support Compiz in 11.04?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Pictures

Dec 13, 2010

Ubuntu 10.10. All things have been working well and as expected until tonight. I was updating some flac files using easyTAG (AAC), adding pictures and changing things a little, then dropping them into a Sansa Fuze+. All things I've done with this setup before and with no problems. I close easyTAG and try to open: Places/ Pictures. Instead of the normal brouser up pops easytag at the pictures directory.

I test all other Places. For each Place selected easyTAG opens instead of the usual brouser. I go to synaptic and remove easyTAG and then restart the system. All is now normal again (except that easyTAG is missing). I reload easyTAG and once again it has put itself as the preferred tool to view directories. How do I restore things to normal and what have I done?

Ubuntu :: What Ever Happened To Use The Largest Amount Of Continuous Free Space

Jan 8, 2011

After a terrible problem I had with x-server, I decided to opt for a clean install. So, naturally I poped in the 10.10 LiveCD (from Canonical), deleted the Ubuntu Partiton (ext4) and swap, and entered the installer. I have a 40gb Vista partition, 90gb media partition, and 20gb unallocated free space. Once I get to allocate drive space in the installation, I get three options - Install alongside other operating systems, erase and use the entire disk, or specify partitions manually. If I click install alongside other operation systems, it tries to take space away from my media partition to install ubuntu. I'm not too advanced with Ubuntu, so I don't think I'm going to specify my own. I don't know how much to give swap etc, etc, etc. What ever happened to use the largest amount of continuous free space? I have 20gb free I would love ubuntu to use.

Fedora :: What Happened To Gnome-volume-properties?

Oct 29, 2009

I'd like to know, what happened to this tool? Till F10 this tool was responsible for automounting Usb drives/Cdrom drives that were connected before I logged into the System via gdm. Since F11, this feature seems to be gone. I recently noticed that my external usb disk stopped to "automagically" appear on the desktop after login. Now I have to powercycle the disk (switch off, switch on) to have it appear on the desktop again. Is there an alternative tool to gnome-volume-properties, or do I really have to play around with hal to get this back? Doesn't really makes to me any sense to remove this feature.
