General :: Noise - Like Defrag - From Hard-drive In Ubuntu

ive just installed ubuntu and notice there are noises coming from my hard-drive like its defragmenting or optimizing but the light isnt coming on... i never noticed this activity in windows7? - when it defrags in windows 7 i can hear it and the light flashes but on this the lights not flashing but i can hear wot sounds like fast writing, really fast clicking
Looking on web it seems to be a problem with power management settings in ubuntu being incorrect... i refuse to believe its the manufacturers as its been fine in windows for past 2 years

Is it possible to keep the hard drive off most of the time, so that the laptop runs silently? (The fan has been taken care of already. Are there any other noise sources?)
I have no practical knowledge about this, but in theory it should be possible to cache frequently used files in RAM and to store disk writes on a flash drive...? UnionFS?

I am dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. When I am on Windows 7, I have no noise from the hard drive. When I use Ubuntu, every now and then I hear a short scratch noise from the hard drive. It didn't start doing it until installing Ubuntu when I was setting up the partitions.

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I recently moved around, deleted and just had a general day of cleaning up the file structure on my pc. HDD contains about 2 TB of data. Around 1 TB was relocated on the disc, and yet another TB was moved to external drive.
In windows this would likely means it was time for a defrag. Can't find any defrag tools in Xubuntu and that lead me to remember I read somewhere that there is no need to defrag when running Linux.
So is that correct? Is defrag only for the wondows world and something we never need to do in Linux?
If not is there a way to do a defrag from terminal?

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.

I have a Toshiba laptop with BIOS that will not recognize USB as a boot medium (I have purchased two USB 'thumb' drives with Distro's that do boot but the BIOS see them as HDD devices!)I did manage to install and boot a distro from the USB HD but ended up with the USB drive having to be connected' to select any of the OS partions, to boot anything.I do realize that somehow, when installing the new distro on the USB drive, I changed the GRUB configuration to be on the USB drive which obviously I did not want, so can

When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.

I bought a USB Harddrive (Seagate 320 GB) and I want to install a Ubantu 10.04 LTS on it. Although my HP/Compaq Mobile Workstation has a selection to boot to a USB Harddrive, I could not get it to boot to the USB HD. So I found this page:

I had to replace my hard drive, so now i have a new blank hard drive that i set partitions and formatted but when i try to load ubuntu from cd i burned(which i checked and downloaded correctly) it stops at the check hlt. i tried ALL the option settings, and still no good. it either restarts or gets stuck at that point again. am i doing something wrong? i can install ONLY ubuntu as my os right? like i said there is nothing else on hard drive-blank.

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I have very small ARM computer with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) running as a backup and media server for my house. I have attached a new "WD My Passport" 750GB USB drive to it. The drive is recognized and I can mount it and read/write files fine. After several minutes, the drive goes to sleep, even if I was in the middle of writing a backup to it. I can force it to start again with sdparm, but it needs to not shut itself down while it's being written to in the first place. I have tried this command to disable the standby state but it doesn't work:
root@Plug:~# sdparm --clear STANDBY -6 /dev/sdb

I have also been told to change /sys/block/sdb/device/allow_restart from 0 to 1, but no such file exists and one cannot be written there. The hardware itself is fine, if I plug it into a Windows computer, it will not sleep while in use.

I am running Windows XP on my PC. I installed a new SSD Drive, which is OCZ-VertexII 120GB. I would like to run Windows and Ubuntu 11.04. The Ubuntu 11.04 Live-DVD runs fine, but when I click on Install, I get to the Screen where it ask if I want to install Ubuntu Side by Side with Windows or want to replace Windows, Ubuntu does not recognize the second SSD-Drive. how to install Ubuntu onto the second SSD-Drive and install the Boot loader onto the First Hard-Drive?

I had installed this drive as a slave drive yesterday, and it had worked perfectly, mounted good, etc., etc.
Today, I fire up ol' trusty, and my slave drive doesn't show in either "Places," "System Monitor," or "Disk Usage Analyzer." It does, however, show up in BIOS and "Gparted Partition Editor." A mounting option isn't present in "Places" as it was yesterday.
If I need to manually mount it or whatever, would someone please list the steps I need to take to get my HD back?
My main harddrive is a Western Digital 160 Gb IDE and is listed as /dev/sda. My slave is a Seagate 80 Gb SATA and is listed as /dev/sdb

I have set up a Ubuntu box that is a proxy server. Everything works great and I would like to somehow make a complete disc backup of everything on that hard drive, incase it fails. Took me quite a while how to figure out everything and get it working. The box has an 80gb drive, with Ubuntu 9.10 loaded, standard default setup. Could I just install a 2nd hard drive and somehow give it a command to mirror everything to the 2nd hard drive?

I recently got the Ubuntu 9.10 cd desktop-i386 (i ordered it from canonical) and i tried to install it , but when i came to step 4 (to partition the HDD) it doesn't recognize my hard drive (3 partitions : 15 gb ext4, 37gb ntfs , 25 gb ntfs).I run Windos XP on 37 gb partition withot problems. I reserved that ext4 for karmic. Also i booted up the live cd to try smth in the terminal...i tried with sudo apt-get -y remove dmraid but still doesn't work.Also when i looked into Places menu the HDD partitions were not there.Also i don't know why but if i dont select ACPI=OFF, ofter booting up desktop freezes after 10 sec...when i select ACPI=OFF it runs great. And when i select ACPI=OFF and NOLAPIC from the F6 boot menu , ubuntu detects my hard drive in places menu and installation menu,but after 15-20 sec the screen freezes and i must restart .I dont think it's the cd because when i tested the live cd at my friends computer it detects their HDD, even without NOLAPIC ! I don't know what to do and i really need Ubunt. Do i need to upgrade my BIOS or what ?

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop alongside Windows 7 on the second 320 GB hard drives and now I want to replace it with a 750 GB hard drive, but when I removed it the grub was gone and Windows (on the first hard drive) wouldn't load. This was a mistake, since the grub is installed on the same hard disk as Ubuntu. I want to use GPorted to delete the partitions on the hard drive, but when I boot with it and use the hard drive partition editor it won't let me delete or move one of the partitions. Does this partition contain the grub and if so how do I move it onto my other hard drive?

I have a Toshiba Dynabook 2010 laptop and I want to install DSL linux on it.The problem is when I boot with DSL Linux there is no hard drive named /dev/hda1 and fdisk -l command does not return.How can I overcome this problem?And I could only boot into DSL if I use the nofstab as a kernel parameter.when I boot with fstab then kernel panic will occur.
I again checked, now there is a /dev/hda but my hda should contain two ext3 partitions.But the problem is the kernel doesn't recognize them.I got debian in my Had disk too.The problem is debian can recognize these two partitions.
