View 5 RepliesAnyone here installed 10.04 on Pentium III's? I have tried installs on 5 of them and have had 5 video failures. These machines all currently run various earlier Ubuntu releases (8.04, 9.04, etc). All of them have 512 M memory but video memory is 32M or less. I have installed 10.04 successfully on 2 Pentium IV's that have 128M video memory so I suspect that's the difference. Is there any trick I'm missing to get the new XRANDR working on these old P-IIIs or should I give up? What I get when bringing up 10.04 from live CD is just a black screen... as 10.04 appears to grind to a halt or just hang.

I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.

If I install Citrix in Fedora (or Ubuntu) will I be able to remote in to my computers using Rdesktop or the Terminal Services clients included with Windows? Will it be faster than VNC?
When I asked about using remote dektop on Linux I was told that RDP was a proprietary MS thing, but I read it's based off Citrix and Ctrix is actually a better version of it that supports more features and different OSes and not just Windows.
I just install Fedora on my Pentium III machine (with the drive tray). So now I am running it at home and school and I need a way to remote into it...
This is harder than it should be. 233 MHz Pentium Pro, 128 MB RAM, Matrox Mystique graphics. The important thing is 35W idle and no fans - a perfect firewall.
Things discovered so far:
- I need to burn DVDs for this machine with -speed=2 (sigh!)
- The syslinux boot loader cannot display its graphical menu - must use the syslinux boot: prompt (double sigh)
- The Live CD does eventually boot into X
The install DVD boots but quickly displays a "You do not have enough RAM to install Fedora on this machine" dialog (this is in text mode). Two questions:
Q1. Is it possible to get anaconda on the DVD to use a swap partition (or otherwise fit into 128MB)?
Q2: Failing that, can I install from the Live CD without starting X?
I just installed 10.04 Desktop onto an external USB disk and used it to boot an old Acer Veriton 7600G with a Pentium 4 CPU clocked at 2.80 GHz, 3 Gb of memory and an AGP Sapphire ATI Radeon video card with 512 Mb of DDR2. With nothing running, nothing swapping, only 7% of memory in use, and around 11% of both CPUs, this system is so slow that with no programs running it takes about 5 seconds to switch between dropdown menus in the main Applications/Places/System menu. The standard GMatrix screensaver takes forever to crank out a single character.

Max ram is 512MB on my system & there is no more room for any upgrades.
Ive been trying to install Fedora 12 on a Dell Latitude C600, (Pentium III 750/600 MHz; 256 MB RAM; 250 KB Level 2 Cache; 8 MB Video Memory; ATI M3 Video Controller) Downloaded iso files from Fedora Project, Verified integrity with sha256sum.exe, burned to 5 CD's. Disc's 1 & 3 failed Linux test at installation. Burned Disk 1 twice more and still fails. Went ahead with installation. Chose to Use all of the 20 B hard disk. Would not install via graphical. Finished after Disk 1. After re-starting computer and logging into root, only get CLI operability and can't seem to get a GUI. I'm new to linux - just thought I'd put this laptop to use to familiarize myself with it.

We all know that the Ubuntu LTS live CD leads to the following option: Screenshot.jpg However, in my laptop the operation freezes before we can reach the above option. The screenshot explains the situation: dscf0107.jpg I know I could always use one of the alternate downloads and install the OS from it. But my point of contention is: where is the matter going wrong? Can't we use the graphical installer CD to do a CUI installation?

Im wondering that if this machine is sufficient to run linux as a server I dont plan to use it for anything big just among me and a few friends Also, I dont rlly need any Desktop Environment as I can just ssh to this machine from my other laptops if I need to do any work on it.
Hence, my questions are as follows:
1. is this machine sufficient to run linux as a web/file server for me and a few friends?
2. also, is it okay to rlly run this laptop 24/7? (its a rlly old laptop after all)
3. lastly, altho I prefer using opensuse, but if I dont need any DE at all, would Arch be a better solution? (Its known to be very small and light)
I am rebuilding my server with Centos 5.3 and is using a RocketRAID 1740 card. Pop in the Centos DVD, which I have used on my other installs. I typed in "linux dd" to allow me to install the RocketRAID drivers. After selecting the drivers and skipping the test for the media. The screen would be just blue and no progress was seen. I left for hours... and still nothing happens..

How can I get a normal text-mode bootup, so I can see which services are starting?
I have had Xp on my pc for a number of years, and have just installed Ubuntu as a dual boot os. I had a bit of trouble installing GRUB, but that's been resolved. My real problem is that now, after reinstalling GRUB, windows crashes at shutdown with a blue screen, as follows.
Code:
0xc0000021 {Fatal system error}
Windows logon process system process has unexpectedly terminated with a status of 0x0000000
The System has been shut down
Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.
View 11 Replies View Relatedmake my own home server to play with. While reading a guide I found out about a package of software called Amahi. Very easy and yet so powerful says the site. That's what I need! I looks cool and indeed pretty easy. I already start smiling because I have this old Ubuntu 11.04 computer here. Then I see that Amahi runs best on Fedora 14 and that the support for Ubuntu is still in Alpha phase. No problem, let's install F14 then. I put everything right in the BIOS. I downloaded the DVD iso image, burned it and put it in my drive. Nothing happens, soon I realise that drive only accepts CD's. I quickly change it with a CD/DVD drive of another computer, but still nothing happens. Then I read about this LiveUSB thing. I do everything needed and change boot sequence to Removable. It still keeps booting Ubuntu on Hard Disk 0. My last resort: Fedora Live i686 iso on a CD. Things go as expected. What am I doing wrong? I just want to see that (probably) blue background of Fedora booting instead of that purple one of Ubuntu.

get Fedora 11 up and running?
I don't really have any Linux experience. But I wanted to try it out. Now I'm afraid I did not set this up properly. Grub gives me 3 options:
Fedora (2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64)
Fedora (2.6.38.8-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64)
Other
When I select <Other> to boot into windows... it starts to try to boot... but then flashes a quick blue screen & restarts. I tried to boot into Window's normal mode, safe mode, and command line... all just restart fdisk -l gives the following:
