I`m having problems trying to install ubuntu 10.10 in a pentium 4.I run memory test in the start page after selecting language and I see lots of errors.This is strange because I have added memory and changed the disk, which was broken.

Ive been trying to install Fedora 12 on a Dell Latitude C600, (Pentium III 750/600 MHz; 256 MB RAM; 250 KB Level 2 Cache; 8 MB Video Memory; ATI M3 Video Controller) Downloaded iso files from Fedora Project, Verified integrity with sha256sum.exe, burned to 5 CD's. Disc's 1 & 3 failed Linux test at installation. Burned Disk 1 twice more and still fails. Went ahead with installation. Chose to Use all of the 20 B hard disk. Would not install via graphical. Finished after Disk 1. After re-starting computer and logging into root, only get CLI operability and can't seem to get a GUI. I'm new to linux - just thought I'd put this laptop to use to familiarize myself with it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAnyone here installed 10.04 on Pentium III's? I have tried installs on 5 of them and have had 5 video failures. These machines all currently run various earlier Ubuntu releases (8.04, 9.04, etc). All of them have 512 M memory but video memory is 32M or less. I have installed 10.04 successfully on 2 Pentium IV's that have 128M video memory so I suspect that's the difference. Is there any trick I'm missing to get the new XRANDR working on these old P-IIIs or should I give up? What I get when bringing up 10.04 from live CD is just a black screen... as 10.04 appears to grind to a halt or just hang.

When I asked about using remote dektop on Linux I was told that RDP was a proprietary MS thing, but I read it's based off Citrix and Ctrix is actually a better version of it that supports more features and different OSes and not just Windows.

I then figured that Windows would probably be too resource hungry to run on the laptop and so thought I should try to run a Linux Distro instead but now I've hit a wall. I can't find a distribution that will install on this low a spec PC but also will enable me to use the wireless card I've specified, even though the card has Linux drivers bundled with it.

I've been using ubuntu for a while and I am comftable with it's interface.
I just installed 10.04 Desktop onto an external USB disk and used it to boot an old Acer Veriton 7600G with a Pentium 4 CPU clocked at 2.80 GHz, 3 Gb of memory and an AGP Sapphire ATI Radeon video card with 512 Mb of DDR2. With nothing running, nothing swapping, only 7% of memory in use, and around 11% of both CPUs, this system is so slow that with no programs running it takes about 5 seconds to switch between dropdown menus in the main Applications/Places/System menu. The standard GMatrix screensaver takes forever to crank out a single character.

If so then I will just use the 32 bit counterpart. Can I run 32 bit Flash in 64 bit Firefox? The OS will be 10.10 until 11.04 is like a month or so old and updates have come out to fix issues.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop that was given to me. It is having a lot of lag issues,especially when playing videos and visiting websites using flash. It's an Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz machine. I think that it should perform better because I had used and AMD Sempron 2.0GHz machine with Ubuntu before and video playback was much better than this. I'm thinking that my problem is the graphics card driver. Here is the card that this machine has:

Is there any tweaking that I can do in the xorg.conf that might help? I don't know which of those options I should set. I also tried changing the driver to "ati" but that did nothing. found some info for settings with "man radeon", I'm going to try some of those out.
This is harder than it should be. 233 MHz Pentium Pro, 128 MB RAM, Matrox Mystique graphics. The important thing is 35W idle and no fans - a perfect firewall.
Things discovered so far:
- I need to burn DVDs for this machine with -speed=2 (sigh!)
- The syslinux boot loader cannot display its graphical menu - must use the syslinux boot: prompt (double sigh)
- The Live CD does eventually boot into X
The install DVD boots but quickly displays a "You do not have enough RAM to install Fedora on this machine" dialog (this is in text mode). Two questions:
Q1. Is it possible to get anaconda on the DVD to use a swap partition (or otherwise fit into 128MB)?
Q2: Failing that, can I install from the Live CD without starting X?
are there real advantages for me in the PAE kernel? Execute Disable Bit/NX bit? Are viruses in linux coming up? Would you change to the Physical Address Extension? Or is this just enabled in the default kernel of openSUSE now?Since a update to openSUSE 11.2 via a new installation I use the default kernel. As I remember before that it was the PAE kernel. I have only 2 GiB memory on my laptop.

I have installed Ubuntu10.04.1LTS in my Desktop amd64 computer. I also downloaded the same version for i386 processors and tried to install the OS for my HCL Pentium Dual Core T4300 @2.1Ghz 4GB RAM laptop, details of which are given in the following two screenshots: dscf0105.jpg and dscf0106.jpg I already have Debian Lenny 5.0.4 installed on the laptop dscf0104.jpg and the laptop works fine when I run the Debian OS or Knoppix liveCD image stored in the HDD of the laptop. We all know that the Ubuntu LTS live CD leads to the following option: Screenshot.jpg However, in my laptop the operation freezes before we can reach the above option. The screenshot explains the situation: dscf0107.jpg I know I could always use one of the alternate downloads and install the OS from it. But my point of contention is: where is the matter going wrong? Can't we use the graphical installer CD to do a CUI installation?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently obtained a built machine that has an Intel motherboard. The computer had Windows XP on it, but the owner wanted me to format it completely before I started using it. Nbd, I just used a gparted live cd and formatted the 200gb Seagate it came with.
Well now, I think the drive is dead or something, because whatever machine I put it in, it doesn't boot.
So, being out the 200gb drive I was hoping to use, I just threw in a spare drive I had laying around. (This is isn't the point of this thread.)I planned to use the machine as a basic server, so I made a Debian install CD and just let the installer run (completing the appropriate prompts). However, usually towards the end of the installation, the machine completely kills itself. It just randomly shuts off. No message about it, just, "Click!" and the machine's dead. I know the installation doesn't complete, I've used the CD on other machines, and Debian will tell you that it's finished and getting your consent before turning off.
Upon trying to reboot the machine, after a few seconds of POST messages, it kills itself again. And again. What I've figured out is pressing the reset button a few times during boot usually gets to go eventually. I swapped the power supply out, but that didn't make a difference. I've tried different RAM. I swapped out the CMOS battery. Nothing seems to be working.. As of right now, it does not kill itself, but it will turn on and immediately it hangs on a a screen that says Nvidia Vanta VGA BIOS and some other video card info. After it started doing this is when I changed the CMOS battery.
The board is older, an Intel D845BG. The first power supply was 300w, as was the second. I also tried a 250w one with no results. The standby light on the motherboard does go on as soon as it gets power. I tried a different video card, just as a "why not?", and the machine still didn't boot, however that first POST line changed to 3D Prophet II, etc. or the name of the video and it reflected the change in video memory.
i installed Slackware 13 no problem.i didn't configure my network from the installer. now when i log on and plug in the ethernet cable nothing happens. i am not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. p.s. if it makes any difference the light green backlight does come on when i plug in the cable both on the computer and on the modem. i have now installed slackware 13.1 and it works great

So basically a 2GHz machine with 2Gigs of ram and a Geforce 8300. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty i think ?). Anyway all of the basic games dont work well, they are choppy and slow. I put them in the lowest resolution just for them to be playable. It does not make any sense to me I have the latest version of the nvidia drivers running (I used ./NVI... --update)

I am trying to do a 'light' install of Ubuntu 10.04 using the alternate install CD. Here is how i am planning to do it:
1. Perform a console only installation(Standard system only on d-i tasksel)
2. Install gnome-core
3. Then install the packages i need using apt.
1. Would such an installation lead have any significant performance(RAM usage) advantage over a full fledged installation?
2. Is there a way i could install gnome-core from the installation CD instead of downloading them from the repository?
3. Would installing just gnome-core mean that synaptic & update-manager wouldn't be available? i am hoping that it wouldn't be the case I checked their dependencies from packages.ubuntu.com, it doesn't look like they need gnome-desktop-environment to be installed first.
4. Would such an install have any more device driver related issues (eg.display drivers) than a regular install?

I need to somehow do a yum installation (or equivalent of) on a system that is offline with no access to the internet. (I do have access to another Linux system that has internet access, but the Linux installations on both systems have different packages installed and enabled.)
Let's say the command to enter is 'yum install pkg1 pkg2 pkg3' (the documentation for some applications I need indicate the installation instructions this way, and not as the actual RPMs I need). Is there a way for me to run that on my offline system?
e.g. one way I can think of is to run that command on the online system, somehow if possible take note of what RPMs get installed, then transfer them to the offline system via USB and install all the RPMs via rpm command.
The problem with my above idea is that the two systems have different packages enabled, so even if yum on the online system shows a few dependencies being downloaded, I could run download and install all these RPMs and their dependencies on the offline system only to find several more missing dependencies, and dependencies of those dependencies.
I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?
I just installed win 7 and now can't install fedira 13 on the partition that i made for it on the same drive. The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows. What can I do to fix this?
