Installation :: Ubuntu Software Center Doesn't Open / Get It To Work?
Feb 18, 2011
When I try to open Ubuntu software center, it appears on the process bar for about 10 seconds before it disappears. I can't get it to start.
I have tried alt+f2 and typing 'software-center', didn't help. I tried reinstalling ubuntu software center in Synoptic package manager, but I got this error message: "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/software-center_3.0.7_all.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1"
This started to happen after I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10. After I did that, I got the 'modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.8.custem/modules.deb, no such
file or directory.' error. Could these two problems be related in any way?
Every time I try to open the Software-Center It doesn't works, I've tried to reinstall, but the problem still, and I can't find the solution anywhere When I try to open it with the terminal, it shows this message code...
SystemError: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_i18n _Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my computer and all had been going good except for this little snag.here's the thing :whenever i try to install something using the software center, the file doesn't get downloaded and the progress bar says "applying changes" which obviously goes on for infinity.I read somewhere that another guy had been experiencing similar problems after installing "ubuntu restricted extras" (codecs) and he solved it by uninstalling the codecs.I noticed that even my last successful install was those codecs.problem is, my s/w center doesn't even uninstall them.i don't know any other way to install apps nor can i figure out how to reinstall s/w center.
Update manager and software center both run, but when I click on "install," they both just sit there and don't respond. If I run software center from a command line, I get the error "WARNING - _on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed." (There are no updates right now, so I can't get an error from the update manager.) Apparently they aren't invoking gksudo or whatever it is they need to elevate privileges. I can get around this by running them as root, but it is kind of annoying. I'm really surprised that no one else has had this problem, but I've searched it a number of times and I can't find any indication of someone having the same symptoms.
i found an encrypted file called vmlinuz that i didn't create and can't delete and can't open because i dont have the password and the root password doesnt work either, what is it?
under 'System Settings < Keyboard & Mouse' I've already set the option 'Double click to open files and folders' but it doesn't seem to work with Dolphin.
I use slack 13.1 64 bits on my intel i7 machine. That is I can't find a flash-player plugin that works on all browsers. The firefox crashes on open. The release of adobe 64 bits plugin simply doesn't work on any browser. I use slack 13.1 64 plus kde. Anyone knows some that works?
I seem to have broken the Ubuntu Software Center by adding the Linux Mint repositories and installing the mint-menu package. When I click on Ubuntu Software Center it changes my cursor and shows it in the windows list for about 10 seconds like it is going to open but never does. I tried removing the mint-menu package and all of the mint packages, I reinstalled software-center andall of the ubuntu keyring packages. Still not able to open the software center.
I have just install 10.10 on my computer, and i can't open ubuntu software center. when i click on it, i see it n task bar, mouse start to roll, but then nothing happens. I've tried to install skype also, same thing.
I've noticed that the "open containing folder" right-click menu item doesn't work in Firefox 3.6. It does nothing. That action used to open Nautilus, showing the folder where the file had been downloaded. What gives? I set up Firefox long ago to call Nautilus when asked to open a folder. Shouldn't Firefox be asking me what app to use, if it weren't set up properly?
I installed nautilus-open-terminal, and now the option "Open in Terminal" does show up in the context menu for me in Nautilus, and clicking it does open a terminal. But it just opens to the home directory, every time, same as if I'd opened a terminal in the ordinary way. I've tried to look for solutions to this, but I can't find anyone that even has the same problem. Other people complaining about it all seem to be saying that a terminal doesn't even open for them, which is not the case for me.
I believe I have deleted a dependency package to Ubuntu Software Center for 10.10. I just don't know how to fix it. When I try to launch the program from the terminal I get a bus error, I've tried removing and reinstalling it, but this does not solve it. Any one have ideas of how to fix this (other than just reinstalling ubuntu)?
I am not really new to ubuntu since I had it for time now I still don't know a lot about it since I was not really interested in exploring it and probably won't understand some of the terms used so go easy on me. Now, since I have upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) (maybe even earlier since I haven't been using it much) I have not been able to open Software Center.
Trying to openit through terminal gave me the following result: Code: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 90, in <module> app = SoftwareCenterApp(datadir, xapian_base_path, options, args) File "/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/app.py", line 145, in __init__ self.history = get_apt_history() ..... raise ValueError, 'unknown locale: %s' % localename ValueError: unknown locale: sr_RS
I am currently using Xubuntu version 11.04 and I am working with a Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. I am using the proprietary FGLRX drivers from AMD.
I have a small problem. I have two monitors, and in order to tell the computer to use the extra monitor for extra desk space, I have to get into the Administrative CCC. However, when I click on the administrative CCC, nothing happens. It's strange considering that the regular CCC works just fine.
Suddenly I seem not to be able to start Ubuntu Software Center anymore. It worked ok for 2 months. When I try software-center in the Terminal here is what comes out.
File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 78, in <module> from softwarecenter.app import SoftwareCenterApp File "/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/app.py", line 43, in <module> from view.installedpane import InstalledPane File "/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/view/installedpane.py", line 36, in <module> from softwarepane import SoftwarePane, wait_for_apt_cache_ready
Every time i try to get anything from the software centre i get this message: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources.
It was working fine, but i updated ubuntu, using the update manager and since then the software centre has stopped working.
I've had many problems with Linux so far. Here's just one: I love Warcraft 3. So I bought Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne today. I installed them correctly with WINE and tried to open. It starts to open like it does at internet cafes, so I think its fine. But then the screen resolution keeps changing and it doesn't get anywhere.
Next problem:I ask my friend who has warcraft 3 on Linux. He says you don't have the right drivers. I go to System > Administrator > Hardware Drivers and as he said the applet said: "No proprietary drivers installed". My friend says to check the Video graphics card. But I don't see where i can find what model it is. My computer is Compaq presario CQ60 with the default video/graphics cards. I know nothing about drivers, If I can't find a solution ill probably reformat my computer to Windows 7.
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 i386, desktop edition.Since then I'm unable to install software using Ubuntu software center and update manager because this apps are not using the proxy configuration. I have a proxy with authentication applied system wide. Synaptic has the same configuration and works well. [URL]All other gnome applications are working well except Ubuntu one. It seems it cannot handle proxy authentication. I have other machines without proxy and they work ok. the result of the
I seem to have caused a problem with the software center in Ubuntu 10.10. When I pick out a piece of software and click 'install' I see it doing something (CPU goes up etc.), but the usual "fill in your password" window doesn't pop up and after say 10 secs the 'install' button in the software center returns to its normal state, i.e. as if I hadn't pressed it yet at all.
I am afraid this is related to a manual install (i.e. through apt-get in a terminal) I did some time ago (I was following an online tutorial to get DVD playback working properly) that probably went wrong (the installation process did get stuck at some point, when it hadn't progressed for a long time (>1 hour) I saw no other option than to quit the terminal). I don't remember exactly what packages I was trying to install though.
What would be the best way to get software center going again?
I downloaded wubi.exe from Opera 10.61. The file downloads ok, but then refuses to do anything when I click on the file.
I also switched to my IE version, and tried to run the file from there. Again, I get the hourglass symbol for a couple of seconds, then nothing.
I'm running Windows 98. I know, I should have a newer version, but finances can't manage that right now. In the meantime, is there a manual way to run the installer for wubi and get it to work?
I can't open ubuntu software center and some other applications like rhythmbox music player.when i tried to launch ubuntu software center from terminal says "andreah@andreah-laptop:~$ software-center
when i start an application it usually places it in the upper left corner or lower right corner or something like that.. but never in the middle of my screen. How can I configure GNOME to always open applications in the middle of my screen..?
Yesterday, I made a clean install of 10.10 (64 bit). Among others, I installed World of Goo from a .deb file, and it worked fine.
Today, I wanted to install Skype from the .deb file. When I double-click the file, I get a "wait" cursor for ~20 sec, then nothing happens. When I try to start Software Center from the Main menu, I also get the Wait cursor and then nothing happens.
I started software-center from the terminal and the software center opened, despite some warnings in the terminal. I could install some random application from the list. Then I tried to start
Code:
And the software center window showed, with Skype selected. When I clicked Install, there was an error message. Despite the "no such a file or directory" part, I am sure that the file name is correct (I tab-completed it).
This is the error message I received when I tried to install:
Code:
Here are the warnings I received when I started the software center:
Code:
