My computer has a much bigger hard drive than 11 gb but that is all I have access to when I transfer files using an external hd -- can anybody set me straight as to what I did wrong installing dual boot ubuntu 10.10 on my windows 7 machine?

Anyhow after rebooting, the VM only display 8bit and 640x480 for XP... this is really weird. anyone come across this before? i can't seem to figure out a fix to get my display back to normal

I am finding it very difficult to place the mouse cursor at the exact point on the bottom right of any window to cause it to change to the resize cursor.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old Omnibook my Dad let me have and I wanted some version of linux on it so naturally I am TRYING to install Damn Small Linux. Here is what I have done so far...
1. I took the hard drive out and used a usb to IDE cable and used the damn small linux live cd on my desktop and installed DSL on the hard drive using the USB HDD tool.
2. I put the hard drive back in the Omnibook and started the boot process
3. When I get to the desktop the screen is full of pink and green lines and I can make it the outlines of the desktop and the icons but cannot read them.
4. When I use the boot floppy to try and boot it and use fb800x600 cheatcode I get all the way to where it is supposed to load the desktop and it gives me this error:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests ( 0 known processed) with 0 events remaining Does anyone know how I can fix this?
It appears that the default boot partition is too small for F12 preupgrade:[URL].. Did anyone try to see if enough space is freed by following these steps? : http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpg...ace_in_.2Fboot

"preupgrade now requires at least 167MB" means more space could be needed, and I'm unclear if the above is sufficient.
I have installed the debian lenny base system in my old pc. I want only a minimal system with a small window manager like icewm and firefox to surf the web. What I need to write now in text mode to install this minimal system?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to backup my entire Ubuntu installation (/boot, swap and /) at /dev/sda (4GB) to /dev/sdb (10GB).I recreated the exact partitions on /dev/sdb, formatted and cp -rp all the files over.For /boot, I used

It didn't boot successfully as the system kept rebooting. I then tried to install grub onto the MBR and boot partition (mounted at /mnt/tempboot).

Grub seems to not find my grub.cfg but it is present.
I installed 10.4 on my Satellite Pro via CD replacing XP. Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?
View 8 Replies View Relatedrecently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.
so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.
i think this is not the right place for this post, but i can not figure out how to post a bug. i am talking about the permissions of: /tmp/orbit-root. please don't tell me now "don't" log in as root if you once login as user root from the login screen the permissions of /tmp/orbit-root are set to: drwx root but if log out the permissions are not set back / or the entry will be deleted. this will end for the next login as a normal user that you will get a bulp of error messages. easy to reproduce. this is not a feature - it's a bug.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been troubled by the high amount of RAM that is used by my Ubuntu desktop. Before I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop, 64-bit) my system used around 500MB of RAM when no applications were open (just cold boot into the GNOME under 9.10). But when I installed Lucid, I've noticed that my used memory is now reported as 1GB or more as soon as I log into the system.
I want to figure out what is using all the extra RAM but I can't seems to find the culprit. I looked at all of the processes and numbers just don't add up. I exported the list of processes into a file and summed up the memory used by every process in a spreadsheet. The total came to around 700MB. Yet, both System Monitor and "free" reported the time that system was using over 1GB of memory. This means that at least 300MB of RAM are used but not by any process, at least as reported by "ps".
i am trying to learn though i have a powercolor ATI radeon hd 5570 video card and i have never installed one in a pc with ubuntu having trouble figuring out how to get drivers.

I tried pressing F10 and F12 while booting but these were all guesses as I do not know which key combination is used to go to bios on this machine.

setting up a wireless network, so bear with me. I just bought a Cisco wireless router and the little USB plug ins (which if I may say, are overly expensive). I can not figure out how to install the router. It is a Linksys E1000 Wireless N Router. I tried to load the software via wine. No luck doing that. I also checked out on Linksys's website and they don't give any info on linux or Ubuntu. Does someone out there know something? Or should I just take this one back and purchase something else

I have gslapt installed but there are no dependencies listed. The k3b website says that kde is a requirement but that can't be true. find the dependencies of the official slackware package. The slackware book does not seem to have that information.

I have accomplished to get an avi working in totem but not in banshee or mplayer or kaffeine. I can't seem to get the mp4 player playing or a dvd.
